Chapter 14: The Confession My Father Buried
Nobody moved.
My father looked like he had seen a ghost.
Because he knew what was coming.
The recording played.
Static.
Then my father’s voice.
“I know who is trying to destroy you, Elena.””
My mother answered.
“Then tell me.””
Her voice sounded exhausted.
Afraid.
My hands tightened around the photograph.
The recording continued.
“It’s someone close.””
A pause.
“Someone you trust.””
My mother whispered:
“Who?””
The file became distorted.
Then my father spoke again.
“I can’t say.””
My heart dropped.
Even now.
Even in the recording.
He was still protecting someone.
My father looked at me.
“Maya, listen—”
“No.””
I didn’t take my eyes off him.
“Let it finish.””
The recording continued.
My mother sounded angry.
“Robert, you promised me you would tell me the truth.””
“I’m trying to protect you.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“You’re protecting yourself.””
The words hit my father.
Because they were the same words I had said.
A strange silence passed through the room.
My mother continued.
“If you know who it is, and you stay quiet, you become part of this.””
The recording stopped.
Then restarted.
A second clip.
This one was shorter.
A different day.
My father’s voice again.
“Victor knows about the evidence.””
My mother gasped.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
“You told him.””
“No!””
My father sounded desperate.
“I would never.””
My mother became quiet.
Then she said:
“Then someone else did.””
The recording ended.
I stared at my father.
“You knew.””
He looked broken.
“I suspected.””
“You suspected someone was after her.””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing?””
His eyes filled.
“I tried.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You tried to hide it.””
“I thought I could fix it.””
“But you couldn’t.””
He looked down.
“No.””
For years, I wanted answers.
I wanted a reason.
I wanted something that explained why my father became distant after my mother died.
But now I had the truth.
He was scared.
And his fear destroyed everything.
Victor stepped forward.
“You see, Maya? Your father isn’t the hero he wants you to believe.””
I looked at Victor.
“And you are?””
His smile faded.
“No.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I’m not.””
“Then why are you here?””
“Because I want what your mother hid.””
“The evidence.””
“Yes.””
I laughed.
“You threatened her. You destroyed her studio. You ruined artists’ lives.””
Victor’s expression remained calm.
“And yet, I’m still standing.””
“That won’t last.””
He looked at me carefully.
“You sound exactly like your mother.””
I felt a chill.
“I’ll take that as a compliment.””
“It isn’t.””
He stepped closer.
“Your mother thought truth would save people.””
“And?””
“She was wrong.””
Before I could respond, Adrian moved.
“You’re leaving.””
Victor looked amused.
“Are you threatening me?””
“Yes.””
Victor smiled.
“You really are Elena’s student.””
The front door suddenly opened.
Security officers rushed inside.
Claire had called them earlier.
Victor looked around.
Then laughed.
“You think this ends tonight?””
I stared at him.
“It ends when the truth comes out.””
His eyes narrowed.
Then he looked at Olivia.
Everyone turned.
Olivia froze.
Victor smiled.
“Ask your step-sister what she was paid.””
My heart stopped.
“Paid?””
Olivia’s face went white.
“No.””
I turned toward her.
“Olivia?””
She shook her head.
“I didn’t.””
Victor laughed.
“She didn’t just steal your VIP ticket, Maya.””
May you like
The room went silent.
“She was hired.””
