Chapter 1: The Ticket He Gave Away

“Your step-sister deserves this more than you do.””

Those were the words my father said while handing over the VIP concert pass my mother had sacrificed everything to help me earn.

I thought I had already lost enough after Mom died. I was wrong. I never imagined the person who would hurt me most would be the man who promised to protect me.

The concert was the biggest night of my life.

The sold-out stadium lights glowed against the dark sky, thousands of fans lining the streets with posters, flashing bracelets, and excitement in their voices. The tour was historic, and every music lover in the country had been trying to get inside.

Including me.

Especially me.

I sat in my car across from the entrance, staring at the VIP pass that was supposed to be around my neck.

Except it wasn’t.

It was hanging from my step-sister Olivia’s hand.

She stood near the security gate in a designer jacket my father had bought her, smiling like she had just won a trophy.

My father stood beside her, avoiding my eyes.

“Dad,” I said, stepping out of my car.

“That ticket was mine.””

He sighed as if I was being unreasonable.

“Maya, don’t make a scene.””

“A scene?”” I looked at the pass in Olivia’s hand.

“You gave away my VIP ticket.””

Olivia tilted her head, pretending to be surprised.

“Oh, Maya. I thought you understood. I’m going with Dad.””

“You know that ticket was purchased for me.””

She smiled softly.

“Things change.””

My fingers tightened around my phone.

The VIP package wasn’t just a random concert upgrade. My mother had saved for months before she passed away. She knew music was my dream. She wanted me to meet the artists, learn from producers, and build connections.

After her funeral, my father promised he would help me continue.

But promises were easy when they didn’t cost him anything.

“Dad,” I said quietly, “Mom left that money for my music career.””

His expression hardened.

“Your mother also left me with responsibilities.””

I stared at him.

“You used her money to buy Olivia a ticket?””

Olivia looked away, but the small smile on her face told me everything.

My father lowered his voice.

“Maya, be realistic. You’re not a celebrity. You’re not some important person.

Olivia is more outgoing. She knows how to network.””

The words hurt more than I expected.

Because he wasn’t just taking away a ticket.

He was telling me he didn’t believe in me.

Olivia stepped closer.

“You do not belong in VIP anyway, Maya.””

My father didn’t correct her.

He didn’t even look at me.

That was the moment something inside me went quiet.

I stopped begging.

I stopped explaining.

I simply nodded.

“Okay.””

My father frowned.

“Okay?””

“Yes.””

I walked back to my car before they could see my hands shaking.

Through the windshield, I watched them disappear behind the VIP entrance.

Olivia waved her pass at security.

My father followed proudly.

They thought they had taken everything from me.

They had no idea they had just made the biggest mistake of their lives.

I sat there for a few minutes, gripping the steering wheel until my breathing slowed.

Then I opened the glove compartment.

Inside was something my father had never seen.

A black envelope with a silver logo.

My mother’s old record label symbol.

I touched the corner carefully.

After she died, everyone assumed I was just the daughter of a woman who once loved music.

Nobody knew what my mother had secretly built.

Nobody knew what I had spent years learning.

Nobody knew why tonight mattered so much.

I stepped out of the car.

Instead of walking toward the guest entrance, I walked toward the massive steel door behind the stadium.

A guard immediately stepped in front of me.

“Sorry, this entrance is for staff and artists only.””

I reached into my bag and handed him my identification.

He looked down.

Then his entire expression changed.

The radio in his hand lowered slowly.

“Maya Carter?””

“Yes.””

The guard immediately straightened.

He looked behind him, then back at me.

“I’m sorry. We weren’t told you had arrived.””

I frowned.

“Arrived?””

Before I could ask what he meant, he pressed a button beside the door.

The heavy steel entrance unlocked.

Another security member rushed over.

Then another.

The first guard lowered his head.

“Welcome back, boss.””

My heart stopped for a second.

“Boss?””

He smiled nervously.

“Your producer has been searching everywhere for you.””

I walked through the door, hearing the stadium noise fade behind me.

My father thought he had thrown me out of VIP.

He didn’t know I had never needed a ticket.

Because while he was giving my seat away…

The entire venue was waiting for me to arrive.

And when I reached the private hallway leading to the artist lounge, I heard Olivia’s voice through the glass door.

“She’s just my half-sister,” she was saying.

“She likes pretending she’s part of the industry.””

I stopped walking.

Then I heard another voice.

A voice I recognized instantly.

The lead singer.

And he sounded angry.

“Pretending?””

I looked through the glass.

My father and Olivia were sitting comfortably inside, drinking champagne.

But the singer was standing across from them, his face filled with disappointment.

May you like

Then he said the words that made me push the door open.

“Do you even know who owns this label?””
