Chapter 9: The Confession That Destroyed Us
The interrogation room smelled of disinfectant and stale coffee.
I sat opposite Daniel, separated by a thick metal table.
A police officer stood near the door.
Daniel looked surprisingly calm.
His jacket was gone. His wrists were cuffed to the table.
But his expression carried the same arrogance I remembered from seventeen years earlier.
"Thank you for coming, Marcus.""
I didn't answer.
He leaned back.
"How's the family?""
"Don't.""
He smiled.
"Still protecting everyone, aren't you?""
I placed both hands on the table.
"You said you had evidence about Rebecca.""
Daniel nodded.
"I do.""
"Then talk.""
He looked toward the officer.
"Can we have a moment?""
"No," the officer replied.
Daniel shrugged.
"Fine.""
He turned back to me.
"Thomas told you he arrived after the accident, didn't he?""
I said nothing.
"That's not true.""
My stomach tightened.
"Explain.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Thomas was there before the crash.""
I stared at him.
"What?""
"He followed Rebecca that night. They argued. She had discovered the original hospital records and threatened to expose the entire arrangement.""
"You're lying.""
"Am I?""
Daniel smiled.
"Ask him why his fingerprints were on the steering wheel.""
I stood.
The officer immediately stepped forward.
"Mr. Bennett, sit down.""
I forced myself back into the chair.
Daniel continued.
"Thomas didn't intend to kill her. He wanted the records. He wanted to stop her from giving them to Claire.""
"You're making this up.""
"Maybe.""
He shrugged.
"But the police have the evidence.""
I stared at him.
"Why would Thomas do that?""
Daniel's expression softened into something almost sympathetic.
"Because he was terrified of losing Alexander.""
I left the interrogation room without another word.
Back at the station, Thomas was waiting with Ethan and Alexander.
Maya had stayed with Patricia at the hospital.
I approached my brother.
"Did you follow Rebecca that night?""
Thomas looked at me.
His silence was enough.
"Answer me.""
He lowered his head.
"Yes.""
Alexander stood.
"Why?""
Thomas's eyes filled.
"Rebecca had taken the hospital records. I wanted to stop her from giving them to Claire.""
"Did you hurt her?""
"No!""
Thomas's voice cracked.
"I swear I never touched her.""
"Then what happened?""
Thomas looked at Ethan.
"I followed her to the warehouse. Daniel was already there.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"Why didn't you tell us?""
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
Thomas looked at Alexander.
"Of losing my son.""
Alexander shook his head.
"You keep saying that as if it explains everything.""
Thomas reached for him.
Alexander stepped away.
Thomas swallowed.
"Rebecca was standing beside her car when I arrived. Daniel was shouting at her. She told him the police were going to receive the records the following morning.""
I listened without moving.
Thomas continued.
"Daniel grabbed her arm. She pulled away. He shoved her toward the car.""
Ethan's face tightened.
"Then?""
"She fell. Daniel got into his vehicle and drove away.""
Thomas wiped his eyes.
"I went to her. She was conscious. She told me to call an ambulance.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"What did you do?""
Thomas looked at me.
"I called Daniel.""
I stared.
"You called the man who had just attacked her?""
"He threatened me. He said if I called the police, he would tell them I had kidnapped Alexander seventeen years earlier. He said he'd make sure I never saw him again.""
"So you left her?""
Thomas began crying.
"I panicked.""
Alexander's face twisted.
"You left Mom?""
Thomas couldn't look at him.
"Yes.""
The single word seemed to empty the room.
Ethan slammed his hand against the table.
"She was alive!""
"I know!""
"You could have saved her!""
"I KNOW!""
Thomas collapsed into his chair.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then he pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket.
"I've carried this for eleven years.""
He placed it in front of Alexander.
It was a note in Rebecca's handwriting.
Thomas, if you ever have to choose between protecting me and protecting Alexander, choose Alexander. But never let him believe he was the reason I was afraid.
Alexander picked it up.
His hands trembled.
"She wrote this before she died?""
Thomas nodded.
"She gave it to me a week earlier.""
Alexander stared at the paper.
Then he looked at Thomas.
"She wanted you to protect me. Not lie to me. Not let her die.""
Thomas covered his face.
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
Alexander stepped backward.
"You don't get to use her love as an excuse for what you did.""
Thomas didn't argue.
I turned toward Ethan.
"Do the police have the evidence?""
He nodded.
"Daniel gave them a recording from the warehouse.""
"Why would he do that?""
"Because he's trying to save himself. He claims Thomas caused the accident and that he only arrived afterward.""
I looked at my brother.
"Is there anything else?""
Thomas shook his head.
But Ethan suddenly spoke.
"Yes.""
He removed a small memory card from his wallet.
"Rebecca's brother gave me this before she died. I found it hidden inside the lining of her old handbag.""
He placed it on the table.
"The recording is incomplete, but it may contain the truth.""
An officer collected the card and transferred the audio to a computer.
We listened.
Rebecca's voice came first.
"Thomas, please. You have to help me.""
Thomas's recorded voice replied.
"I can't. Daniel will destroy us.""
"He's already destroying us!""
A door slammed.
Daniel's voice appeared.
"Give me the records.""
Rebecca shouted.
"No!""
There was a struggle.
Then a crash.
A few seconds of silence followed.
Thomas's voice came again.
"Rebecca? Rebecca, can you hear me?""
Her breathing was weak.
Then she whispered:
"Call Marcus.""
Thomas replied:
"I can't.""
"Please...""
Then another voice entered the recording.
Daniel.
"Leave her.""
Thomas sounded terrified.
"She's hurt.""
Daniel answered coldly.
"Then you should have thought about that before helping her.""
A door opened.
Footsteps moved away.
Then Rebecca spoke again.
The words were faint, but unmistakable.
"Thomas... don't let him take the twins.""
The recording ended.
Alexander sat completely still.
Ethan stared at the computer.
The officer picked up the phone and left to inform the investigators.
I looked at Thomas.
"You left her.""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then you lied to me for eleven years.""
"Yes.""
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I looked at the young man sitting beside me.
Alexander had lost his mother twice.
First when Rebecca died.
Then when he discovered how much of her final night had been hidden from him.
He stood and walked toward the station doors.
I followed.
"Alexander.""
He stopped.
"Where are you going?""
"Home.""
"Thomas wants to talk to you.""
"I don't want to talk to him.""
I nodded.
"Okay.""
He turned toward me.
"Are you going to forgive him?""
I looked through the glass.
Thomas was sitting alone, staring at Rebecca's note.
"I don't know.""
Alexander wiped his face.
"I don't think I can.""
I put my hand on his shoulder.
"You don't have to decide tonight.""
He looked at me.
"Do you think Mom knew?""
"Which one?""
He swallowed.
"Both.""
I understood.
Rebecca had known Thomas was afraid. Claire had known Daniel was dangerous. Both women had tried to protect the children.
And the people who claimed to love them had allowed fear to become an excuse for terrible decisions.
"I think they both wanted you safe," I said.
Alexander nodded.
Then his phone vibrated.
He looked down.
A new message had arrived from an unknown number.
But Daniel was in police custody.
The message contained a photograph.
It showed Maya standing outside the hospital.
She was alone.
Beneath the photograph were eight words:
Your sister is with the person who knows everything.
Alexander immediately called her.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
I grabbed my keys.
Then my phone rang.
It was Patricia.
Her voice was trembling.
"Marcus, listen. Maya just received a visitor.""
"Who?""
Patricia hesitated.
"Eleanor.""
I felt relief for half a second.
Then Patricia continued.
"She asked Maya to come downstairs. She said she had something important to confess.""
"Where are they now?""
"Marcus...""
Her voice broke.
"They're gone.""
I stopped walking.
"What do you mean, gone?""
"I went to the bathroom. When I came back, Maya and Eleanor had disappeared.""
I looked at Alexander.
His face had turned white.
Then another message appeared.
This time, it contained a photograph of Maya sitting in the passenger seat of a car.
She was crying.
The message beneath it read:
Bring the original hospital records. Come alone.
A second message arrived.
Or you'll never see your daughter again.
I called the police.
Then I called Patricia.
Then Thomas.
And finally, I looked at Alexander.
"Your sister needs us.""
He nodded.
"I'm coming.""
As we rushed toward the parking lot, my phone rang again.
This time, it was Eleanor.
I answered immediately.
"Where is Maya?""
Her voice was barely audible.
"Marcus, I'm sorry.""
"Where are you?""
"I tried to stop him.""
"Who?""
A long silence followed.
Then Eleanor whispered:
"Daniel's partner.""
I stopped beside the car.
"Daniel's partner is in prison.""
"No," she replied.
"Daniel was never working alone.""
I heard a door slam in the background.
Then Eleanor spoke her final words before the call disconnected.
"Marcus, the person who has been helping him is your wife.""
I froze.
"What?""
Eleanor's voice came through one last time.
"Not Claire. Your second wife.""
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
My second wife.
I had never remarried.
I had never even dated seriously after Claire died.
Then Alexander slowly turned toward me.
"Mom?""
I looked at him.
He was staring at the photograph on his phone.
The woman sitting beside Maya wasn't Eleanor.
May you like
It was a woman neither of us recognized.
And she was wearing my family wedding ring.
