Chapter 8: The Truth Behind the Hospital Records

The police took Daniel away shortly before midnight.

Eleanor was transported to the hospital for treatment, and the officers asked us to remain available for questioning.

But nobody wanted to leave the house.

Not yet.

Alexander stood in the living room, holding the document with Thomas's signature.

"Explain it.""

Thomas sat opposite him.

His hands were shaking.

"I can explain.""

"You keep saying that.""

Alexander dropped the paper onto the table.

"Every time I ask you something, there's another secret. You knew I was adopted. You knew Rebecca wanted to tell me.

You knew Daniel was alive. What else?""

Thomas looked at him.

"Your mother was trying to protect you.""

Alexander's expression changed.

"Don't.""

Thomas swallowed.

"Rebecca loved you more than anything.""

"Then why did she die without telling me the truth?""

Thomas closed his eyes.

I stepped between them.

"Thomas, answer the question.""

He looked at me.

"That document wasn't a confession. It was part of the adoption process.""

"Then why did Ethan say you knew earlier?""

Ethan placed the original hospital file on the table.

"Because Thomas signed another statement four years later.""

He opened the folder.

The second document was dated seventeen years earlier.

It was a hospital authorization form.

Thomas's signature appeared at the bottom.

I read the heading.

*Emergency Guardianship Authorization.*

But the paragraph above his signature was what caught my attention.

It stated that the biological father had been identified and that the child was being transferred under a confidential arrangement.

I looked at Thomas.

"You knew I was the father?""

Thomas nodded.

"Yes.""

Alexander stepped backward.

"How long?""

"Since the day you were born.""

The room fell silent.

I stared at my brother.

"Why?""

Thomas rubbed his eyes.

"Because Claire asked me to.""

"Claire?""

"She woke up briefly after the delivery. She was terrified. She told me Daniel had been threatening her for months. She believed he would take Alexander if he found out Marcus was the biological father.""

I shook my head.

"Why would Daniel care?""

"Because he had convinced himself that one of the babies was his. He had been told Claire was pregnant during their relationship. He believed Alexander was his son.""

"Was he?""

"No.""

Thomas's answer was immediate.

"Both children were yours.""

Alexander looked at him.

"Then why did you take me?""

Thomas's voice broke.

"Because Claire asked me to.""

He explained that Claire had been afraid Daniel would discover the twins and use them to destroy her marriage.

She wanted Alexander temporarily placed with someone she trusted.

Thomas and Rebecca agreed.

The plan was supposed to last only a few weeks.

But Claire's health deteriorated.

Then she died.

And the weeks became months.

The months became years.

By the time Thomas considered telling me, Alexander had already started calling him Dad.

"I couldn't take that away from him," Thomas whispered.

Alexander stared at him.

"You didn't have to take anything away. You could have told me the truth.""

"I know.""

"You let me believe you were my biological father.""

Thomas nodded.

"You let me believe Mom was the only mother I had.""

Thomas began crying.

"I loved you.""

Alexander looked away.

"That doesn't make it okay.""

Ethan cleared his throat.

"There's another part.""

He opened the hospital file.

"Claire had requested a second independent DNA test. The results were delivered three days before she died.""

He placed the report in front of me.

I read the names.

Mother: Claire Bennett.

Father: Marcus Bennett.

Child One: Maya Bennett.

Child Two: Alexander Bennett.

Both children were biologically mine.

There was no ambiguity.

For the first time since the nightmare began, I felt a strange kind of relief.

My children were my children.

Nothing Daniel said could change that.

But another page caught my attention.

It was a handwritten note from Claire.

If Marcus ever learns the truth, please tell him I never doubted his love. I doubted the world around us.

I sat down.

I could almost hear her voice.

The way she used to say my name when she wanted me to listen carefully.

The way she would smile whenever Maya fell asleep on my chest.

The way she had promised me that we would grow old together.

I had spent eleven years believing our life had been simple.

Now I was discovering that the woman I loved had carried an entire world of fear and secrets without telling me.

Maya came downstairs.

She had been sitting in the guest bedroom with Alexander's photograph.

"Is it true?"" she asked.

I looked up.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

She walked over to her brother.

"So we're really twins.""

Alexander gave a small, sad smile.

"Apparently.""

Maya sat beside him.

"I've never had a brother.""

He looked at her.

"Neither have I.""

She hesitated.

"Would you like to?""

For the first time, Alexander smiled properly.

"Yeah. I think I would.""

They hugged.

Thomas watched them from the opposite chair, tears running down his cheeks.

Then Alexander pulled away.

"There's something I need to ask you.""

Thomas nodded.

"Anything.""

"Did Mom know Daniel was dangerous?""

"Yes.""

"Did she know he might hurt her?""

Thomas stared at the floor.

"She suspected it.""

"Then why didn't you take her to the police?""

Thomas's voice became barely audible.

"Because I was afraid the police would investigate the adoption arrangement. I was afraid they'd take you away.""

Alexander stood.

"So you chose to protect the secret instead of protecting her.""

Thomas didn't answer.

Ethan placed another document on the table.

"There's one more thing.""

I looked at him.

"What now?""

He showed us a photograph of a parking garage.

A black car was visible near the entrance.

The date was three days before Rebecca's accident.

Ethan pointed to the driver.

"That's Daniel.""

Then he pointed to the passenger.

My heart stopped.

The man was wearing a familiar dark coat.

I leaned closer.

It was Thomas.

My brother.

"Why were you with him?"" I asked.

Thomas stared at the photograph.

His face crumpled.

"That's not what it looks like.""

Alexander stepped away from him.

"Then tell us what it looks like.""

Thomas stood and walked toward the window.

"I met Daniel because he threatened Rebecca. He said he knew where Alexander was and that he would take him.""

I felt anger rise again.

"So you made a deal with him?""

"I agreed to give him the hospital records.""

Ethan's expression hardened.

"Rebecca discovered the arrangement.""

Thomas nodded.

"She confronted me. She told me I was helping the man who had threatened our son.""

Alexander's voice shook.

"And the night she died?""

Thomas closed his eyes.

"I was supposed to meet her.""

"What?""

"She wanted to hand me the original records. I told her to meet me at the old warehouse.""

Ethan leaned forward.

"Did you see her?""

Thomas nodded.

"I arrived after the accident.""

"Did you call the police?""

Thomas looked at him.

"No.""

I felt sick.

"Why?""

Thomas finally turned toward us.

"Because Daniel was standing beside her car.""

Alexander grabbed the back of a chair.

"What?""

Thomas's eyes filled.

"He told me she'd lost control. He said if I went to the police, he would make sure Alexander disappeared.""

Ethan stared at him.

"Did you believe him?""

Thomas nodded.

"I was terrified.""

I stepped closer.

"You left Rebecca there?""

Thomas broke down.

"I thought she was already dead.""

The room went silent.

Then Ethan reached into his bag and removed a final document.

"There's a problem with that story.""

He placed a police photograph beside the old accident report.

"The coroner's original report says Rebecca died from a head injury. But the supplemental report says something else.""

I read the final paragraph.

My hands began trembling.

Rebecca's death had not been instantaneous.

She had survived the crash.

She had been alive when someone reached her.

And the supplemental report contained one final handwritten observation.

Victim had been moved from the driver's seat before emergency services arrived.

I looked at Thomas.

"Who moved her?""

Thomas couldn't speak.

Ethan answered.

"Daniel.""

Then he pointed to the time recorded on the report.

"According to the medical examiner, Rebecca was still alive for at least twenty minutes after the collision.""

Alexander began crying.

"Could someone have saved her?""

Nobody answered.

Ethan lowered his voice.

"Yes.""

He looked directly at Thomas.

"Someone could have.""

Thomas collapsed into the chair.

And before anyone could say another word, my phone rang.

The police officer handling Daniel's arrest was calling.

I answered.

"Marcus Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"There's been a development. Daniel has requested to speak with you.""

"Why?""

The officer hesitated.

"He says he has evidence concerning Rebecca's final moments.""

I looked at Thomas.

Then Alexander.

The officer continued.

"And he says he can prove that the person who left Rebecca to die wasn't him.""

A cold silence filled the room.

"Who was it?"" I asked.

May you like

The officer replied:

"Your brother.""
