Chapter 3: Two Babies, One Terrible Secret

I didn't sleep that night.

Neither did Maya.

At two in the morning, I found her sitting on the kitchen floor, wearing the same sweatshirt she'd worn to dinner. Her phone was beside her, and a glass of untouched water sat on the counter.

I pulled out the chair next to her.

"Can't sleep?""

She shook her head.

"Are you angry with me?""

The question hurt more than anything Daniel had said.

I crouched beside her.

"Why would I be angry with you?""

"Because I didn't tell you sooner.""

I brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

"Maya, you were seventeen years old. A grown man threatened you. You were scared. That's not something you should feel guilty about.""

She looked down.

"Daniel said you wouldn't believe me.""

"Daniel is a liar.""

"He said you only loved me because you thought I was yours.""

I felt something inside me break.

I took both her hands.

"Look at me.""

She slowly raised her eyes.

"I loved you when you were a baby who screamed every night. I loved you when you broke my favorite watch trying to fix it. I loved you when you failed your driving test twice. I loved you before you could even say my name.""

A tiny, trembling smile appeared on her face.

"You cried more than I did when I failed.""

"Because the driving instructor was clearly a terrible judge of character.""

She laughed through her tears.

For a moment, she looked like my little girl again.

Then she asked the question I had been dreading.

"Dad, what if I'm not really your daughter?""

I pulled her into my arms.

"Then I'll still be your father.""

She clung to me.

And I made myself a promise.

Whatever the truth was, Daniel would never use it to take my daughter away from me.

At eight the next morning, Patricia arrived with a folder.

She looked exhausted.

"I found something Claire left behind," she said.

We sat in the living room while Maya went upstairs to get dressed.

Patricia opened the folder.

Inside were hospital documents, photographs, and several letters.

"Claire knew Daniel might come back one day," Patricia explained.

"She asked me to keep these safe.""

I examined the first document.

It was a hospital birth record.

Mother: Claire Bennett.

Date: October 14.

Delivery: Twins.

I looked at the names.

Baby A: Maya Bennett.

Baby B: Unknown male infant.

The father's name was left blank.

"Why is the father's name missing?""

Patricia folded her hands.

"Because Claire didn't know which man was the father.""

I stared at her.

"Which man?""

She took a breath.

"Marcus, before Claire met you, she was involved with Daniel.""

The words didn't register immediately.

"What?""

"They were together for almost a year. She ended the relationship when she realized how controlling he had become.""

I stood.

"Claire and Daniel?""

Patricia nodded.

"She met you several months later. You treated her differently. You made her feel safe.""

I walked to the window.

The memory of Claire laughing in our first apartment suddenly felt impossibly distant.

"Are you telling me Daniel could be Maya's biological father?""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"And the other baby?""

Patricia hesitated.

"Claire believed both babies were yours.""

I turned around.

"What?""

"She had been with you during the time the children were conceived. Daniel had been gone for months. But there was a problem.""

"What problem?""

Patricia pulled out another document.

It was a blood test report.

The hospital had ordered additional testing because one of the babies had experienced complications shortly after birth.

There was a handwritten note at the bottom.

Paternity discrepancy. Further investigation recommended.

I stared at the page.

"Did Claire know?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Patricia's eyes filled.

"Because she was afraid you would leave.""

I shook my head.

"She knew me better than that.""

"She did. But she was frightened, Marcus. Daniel had threatened to take the children. He told her he would destroy her if she ever revealed what happened.""

I sat down heavily.

"Where was the other baby taken?""

Patricia looked toward the stairs.

"That's what I've been trying to find out.""

A noise came from the hallway.

Maya stood there holding a small wooden box.

"I think I know.""

She walked toward us and placed it on the coffee table.

"I found this in Grandma's bedroom when I was looking for my school documents.""

Patricia immediately recognized it.

"Oh, Claire.""

Maya opened the box.

Inside was a hospital bracelet, a folded photograph, and a tiny silver necklace.

The bracelet had a name written on it.

*Baby B — Alexander Bennett.*

Maya picked up the photograph.

It showed Claire holding two babies.

She looked happy, but there was something unusual.

One baby wore a blue blanket.

The other wore yellow.

On the back, Claire had written:

My two miracles. Whatever happens, they belong together.

I felt tears sting my eyes.

"Alexander," I whispered.

Maya nodded.

"That's the name Daniel used.""

She pulled out her phone and opened a message.

It contained a photograph of a young man standing outside a university building.

He looked about eighteen.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A small scar near his left eyebrow.

He looked familiar.

Far too familiar.

I leaned closer.

"Who is that?""

Maya swallowed.

"Daniel said he's my twin brother.""

Patricia covered her mouth.

"Where did you get this photograph?""

"Daniel sent it yesterday.""

I studied the young man's face.

Then I noticed the background.

A university logo.

And a location tag.

The photograph had been taken less than twenty miles from our house.

My phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID showed a number I recognized.

Eleanor.

I answered.

"Where are you?"" I asked.

"At home," she replied.

"Did you know about the twins?""

Silence.

"Mom?""

Finally, she whispered, "Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you know Daniel was alive?""

Another silence.

"Yes.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"Did you know he was contacting Maya?""

"I didn't know he would involve her.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Eleanor began crying.

"Marcus, you need to come here. There is something I should have told you years ago.""

"What?""

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"The second baby wasn't taken away by the hospital. I took him.""

I stopped breathing.

Patricia looked at me.

Maya slowly stood.

"What did you just say?"" I asked.

Eleanor continued.

"I thought I was protecting Claire. Daniel was dangerous, and he wanted that boy. I took the baby before Claire could leave the hospital.""

"Where did you take him?""

"I gave him to someone I trusted.""

"Who?""

She started sobbing.

"Someone who promised to raise him as their own.""

My mind raced.

"Who raised my son?""

Eleanor hesitated.

Then she said a name.

A name I hadn't heard in years.

A name belonging to someone who had attended every family Christmas, every birthday, and every Sunday dinner.

Someone Maya had called Uncle.

I looked at Patricia.

Then at my daughter.

And finally, I heard Eleanor whisper the words that would change everything.

"Marcus, Alexander has been living with you all along.""

I dropped the phone.

Because suddenly, I remembered the one person who had always insisted that Maya and Daniel's family history was none of my business.

May you like

My younger brother.

Thomas.
