Chapter 7: The Man Waiting in the Basement

"Nobody moves.""

My voice came out harder than I intended.

Thomas stood at the bottom of the staircase, staring at the basement door. Alexander was beside me, one hand gripping the railing. Behind us, Eleanor was struggling to sit upright.

From downstairs, Daniel laughed.

"Come on, Thomas. Don't pretend you haven't been waiting for this.""

Thomas looked at me.

His face had lost every trace of color.

"Marcus, you need to get the children out of here.""

Alexander immediately stepped forward.

"I'm not a child.""

Thomas turned toward him.

"I know. That's why I'm asking you to listen.""

I pulled out my phone and dialed emergency services.

Before I could finish explaining our location, the basement door opened.

Daniel appeared at the bottom of the stairs.

He looked older than in the photographs, with gray threaded through his dark hair and a deep scar running along his jaw.

But there was no mistaking him.

He wore a black jacket and held a small silver pistol pointed toward the floor.

"Well," he said, looking at me.

"The whole family is here.""

I stepped in front of Alexander.

"Put the weapon down.""

Daniel smiled.

"You always were the responsible one, Marcus. That's why Claire chose you.""

"Don't say her name.""

He raised both hands slightly.

"Still sensitive after all these years?""

Thomas moved toward him.

"You touched Rebecca.""

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"Careful.""

"Did you kill her?""

Daniel looked at Thomas for a long moment.

Then he laughed.

"You really don't know, do you?""

Thomas's fists clenched.

"Tell me.""

Daniel leaned against the basement doorway.

"Rebecca was a problem. She had the hospital records. She knew about the twins. She was going to tell Marcus everything.""

"So you killed her?"" Alexander shouted.

Daniel looked at him.

"Your mother was a very stubborn woman.""

Alexander lunged forward.

I caught him around the chest.

"Don't!""

Daniel raised the pistol.

"That's enough.""

Everything stopped.

Then Daniel looked directly at Alexander.

"You've grown up nicely. Rebecca did a good job.""

Alexander struggled against my arms.

"Don't talk about her!""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"She was never supposed to raise you. Neither was Thomas. Neither was Marcus supposed to know about you.""

I tightened my grip on Alexander.

"Why are you doing this?""

Daniel sighed.

"Because Claire made a decision that ruined my life.""

"Claire chose to leave you.""

"She chose you.""

His voice cracked with anger.

"She had two children with you. She built a family with you. And I was left with nothing.""

I stared at him.

"You had a family. You destroyed it yourself.""

Daniel stepped closer.

"You don't understand. I wanted my son.""

"Alexander is my son.""

Daniel laughed.

"According to a piece of paper you haven't even seen.""

From the hallway, Eleanor suddenly spoke.

"Daniel, stop.""

He turned.

She was standing at the top of the stairs, one hand pressed against her bleeding forehead.

"You've done enough.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You should have stayed out of this, Mother.""

"I spent seventeen years covering for you. I lied to my family. I let an innocent woman die without telling the truth.""

Daniel pointed the gun toward her.

"Don't.""

Eleanor continued.

"Rebecca was right about you. You never wanted Alexander because you loved him. You wanted him because he was something Claire had given Marcus.""

Daniel's face twisted.

"Shut up!""

Eleanor stepped down one stair.

"You wanted to punish your brother.""

Daniel suddenly moved toward her.

Thomas rushed forward.

The two men collided.

The gun hit the floor and slid beneath a cabinet.

I pushed Alexander behind me.

"Stay there!""

Thomas grabbed Daniel's jacket, but Daniel drove an elbow into his ribs. Thomas stumbled backward and hit the wall.

Daniel reached for the weapon.

I tackled him before he could get it.

We crashed against the basement door.

His elbow struck my cheek. I tasted blood.

"Get off me!"" he shouted.

I held his wrist against the floor.

"You don't get to hurt another person in this family!""

He twisted violently.

Then a second figure appeared behind him.

A man wearing a gray hoodie.

He grabbed me around the shoulders and pulled me away.

Daniel scrambled upright.

"Get them!""

The stranger pulled a small black object from his pocket.

For one terrifying second, I thought it was another weapon.

Instead, he raised a phone.

A red recording light was blinking.

"That's enough, Daniel.""

Daniel stared at him.

"What are you doing?""

The stranger pulled back his hood.

Thomas stopped breathing.

"Rebecca?""

The man shook his head.

"No. My name is Ethan.""

He looked at Thomas.

"I'm Rebecca's brother.""

Thomas stared.

"Your family told me you moved overseas.""

"I did. Three years ago. But I came back after Rebecca's death because someone sent me the recording she made.""

Daniel took a step backward.

Ethan raised his phone.

"Everything you've said tonight has been recorded. Including your admission about Rebecca.""

Daniel looked toward the gun beneath the cabinet.

Then toward the stairs.

He ran.

But before he could reach the door, sirens sounded outside.

The emergency services had arrived.

Daniel froze.

Two officers entered the house moments later and ordered everyone to keep their hands visible.

Daniel tried to protest.

"This is a family misunderstanding!""

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"Tell that to Rebecca.""

The officers handcuffed Daniel.

As they led him upstairs, he stopped beside Alexander.

He looked at the young man for several seconds.

Then he said something that made my son go completely still.

"Ask your father what happened the night you were born.""

Alexander frowned.

"Which father?""

Daniel smiled.

"The one who signed the hospital records.""

I stepped forward.

"Daniel, shut up.""

But he continued.

"Your biological father isn't the only man who has been lying to you.""

The officers dragged him away.

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Alexander turned toward Thomas.

"What's he talking about?""

Thomas looked exhausted.

Ethan slowly lowered his phone.

"I think I can explain.""

He opened a leather bag and removed a sealed document.

"This was Rebecca's last attempt to expose Daniel. She gave it to me the week before she died.""

I took the document.

The hospital seal was still intact.

At the top was a heading:

*CONFIDENTIAL PATERNITY AND MATERNITY REVIEW.*

I looked at Ethan.

"What does this prove?""

He swallowed.

"That Daniel wasn't the only person who knew about the hospital records.""

He turned toward Thomas.

"And that Thomas may have known the truth much earlier than he admitted.""

Thomas shook his head.

"No.""

Ethan placed another paper on the table.

It was a signature.

Thomas's signature.

Dated seventeen years earlier.

And beneath it were the words:

I acknowledge that the child known as Alexander Bennett is not biologically related to the guardian signing this declaration.

Thomas sat down.

Alexander stared at him.

"Why did you sign that?""

May you like

Thomas covered his face.

And for the first time that night, I realized Daniel might not have been the only person hiding something.
