Chapter 2: The Neighbor’s Secret

I stood in the hospital hallway, unable to move.

The noise around me disappeared.

The footsteps.

The ringing phones.

The voices of nurses calling names.

All I could hear was Mark’s sentence repeating in my head.

I heard your little girl screaming before you even got home.

“Mark,” I said slowly, “what exactly did you see?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

“Daniel,” he finally said, “I need you to come over when you can.””

“I’m at the hospital.””

“I know.””

My eyes narrowed.

“How do you know?””

Another silence.

Then Mark lowered his voice.

“Because I saw you carry her out.””

I looked through the hallway window toward Emily’s room.

My daughter was lying on the bed while the doctor prepared her stitches.

She looked so small.

Too small.

“What did the camera record?”” I asked.

Mark sighed.

“Come over after your daughter is treated. I’ll show you everything.””

“No,” I said.

My voice came out sharper than I expected.

“I need to know now.””

I heard him breathe.

“Daniel, I don’t think you understand what you’re about to see.””

My stomach twisted.

“Tell me.””

Another pause.

Then Mark said:

“Your wife wasn’t cleaning your daughter.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then what was she doing?””

Mark didn’t answer.

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

A few seconds later, Rachel texted again.

*Where are you?*

Then:

*Why are you ignoring me?*

Then:

*This is ridiculous. Call me.*

I looked at those words and wondered when exactly my marriage had reached this point.

When had I started questioning the person I trusted most?

When had my daughter become afraid of her own mother?

The doctor walked out.

“Mr. Carter?””

I immediately stood.

“Yes?””

“She needed six stitches. The cut is deep, but thankfully there’s no eye damage.””

I released a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.

“Can I see her?””

The doctor nodded.

“But I want to ask you something first.””

I waited.

“Has your daughter mentioned being afraid of anyone at home?””

The question hit harder than I expected.

I looked away.

“She said something happened before I arrived.””

The doctor’s expression became serious.

“Children often minimize things when they’re scared.””

I nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

When I went back inside, Emily was holding a stuffed animal the nurse had given her.

She looked at me.

“Is Mommy mad?””

The question broke something inside me.

“No, sweetheart.””

It was a lie.

I didn’t know if Rachel was mad.

I didn’t know what Rachel was.

I sat beside Emily.

“Can you tell Daddy what happened before the picture?””

Her fingers squeezed the stuffed animal.

“I was drawing outside.””

“With what?””

“Chalk.””

“Okay.””

She looked at the door.

Then she whispered:

“Mommy told me to move.””

“Move where?””

“Closer to the fence.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Why?””

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“What happened next?””

“She was holding her phone.””

My blood ran cold.

“She took a picture?””

Emily nodded.

“Then she said I ruined everything.””

I leaned closer.

“What did she mean?””

My daughter’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said nobody would believe me.””

I felt a wave of anger rise through my chest.

But I forced myself to stay calm.

“Did Mommy say anything else?””

Emily looked down.

“She said Daddy always thinks I’m perfect.””

My heart sank.

Because that wasn’t an angry sentence from a mother.

That was resentment.

The nurse came in to check on Emily.

While she talked to my daughter, I stepped outside and called Mark again.

He answered immediately.

“Did you watch it?”” I asked.

“Yes.””

“Tell me.””

His voice was heavy.

“Daniel, the camera caught everything.””

I closed my eyes.

“What did it show?””

Mark hesitated.

Then he said:

“Your wife wasn’t reacting to an accident.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“She caused it?””

“I’m not saying that.””

“Mark.””

He exhaled.

“I’m saying the fall happened after your wife did something to scare her.””

My heart pounded.

“What did she do?””

“I don’t want to explain it over the phone.””

“Send me the video.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because Rachel already came to my house.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She came here about twenty minutes after you left.””

The hallway suddenly felt freezing.

“Why would she come to your house?””

Mark’s answer came quietly.

“She asked if my cameras were working.””

I stared ahead.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

A terrible thought entered my mind.

“Mark…”

“Daniel?””

“Did she ask you to delete the footage?””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

My stomach dropped.

“What did you tell her?””

“I told her I hadn’t checked.””

I looked toward Emily’s room.

My daughter was watching cartoons, unaware of the storm forming around her.

“Mark, I need that footage.””

“I’ll give it to you.””

“When?””

His voice lowered.

“But there’s something else.””

“What?””

“The camera didn’t just record the patio.””

I waited.

“It recorded Rachel before she walked outside.””

My fingers went numb.

“What was she doing?””

Mark swallowed.

“Daniel…”

“What was she doing?””

May you like

His answer was barely a whisper.

“She was already angry before your daughter ever came outside.””
