Chapter 12: The Witness Nobody Expected
I didn’t tell Rachel about the diary.
Not yet.
For the first time since this nightmare began, I understood something important.
Information was the only advantage I had.
Rachel had spent months collecting things.
Pictures.
Notes.
Stories.
She had prepared.
Now I needed to prepare too.
The next morning, I contacted a family attorney.
Not because I wanted a war.
Because I needed to protect Emily.
The attorney, Michael Reed, listened quietly as I explained everything.
The videos.
The folder.
The recordings.
The hidden diary.
When I finished, he leaned back.
“Daniel, I need to ask you something.””
“What?””
“Do you have evidence that Rachel physically harmed Emily before the patio incident?””
I thought about the hose.
The injury.
The video.
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“Good.””
“But?””
“But custody cases are complicated.””
I understood.
“Because she’ll say I’m angry.””
“Yes.””
I looked down.
“She’s already saying that.””
Michael folded his hands.
“Then we need to know who else has seen her behavior.””
I thought about the messages.
The unknown person.
The man on the recording.
“I think someone knows more.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
That afternoon, I received a call.
The number was blocked.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice.
“Daniel?””
“Yes?””
“My name is Karen.””
I froze.
The name from the messages.
“Rachel’s friend?””
“Yes.””
I stood.
“Why are you calling me?””
Her voice trembled.
“Because I made a mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“I believed her.””
I said nothing.
“She showed me the pictures.””
I closed my eyes.
“Did she tell you Emily was dangerous?””
“Yes.””
“Did you believe it?””
“At first.””
The honesty surprised me.
“What changed?””
Karen took a breath.
“I saw something.””
“What?””
“A month ago, Rachel came to my house.””
I waited.
“She was upset.””
“About Emily?””
“No.””
The answer caught me off guard.
“Then what?””
“About you.””
My grip tightened.
“What did she say?””
Karen’s voice became quiet.
“She said if things didn’t improve, she would have to make sure you couldn’t take Emily away from her.””
A cold chill moved through me.
“Did she say how?””
“She said she was collecting proof.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?””
Karen was silent.
Then:
“Because I thought she was a mother asking for help.””
I understood.
That was the terrifying part.
Rachel didn’t look like a villain.
She looked like someone who needed saving.
That was why people believed her.
“Karen,” I said, “who was the man on the recording?””
She went quiet.
Too quiet.
“Karen?””
Finally, she whispered:
“I think I know.””
My heart started pounding.
“Who?””
“He’s the person who introduced Rachel to the lawyer.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“Name.””
Another pause.
Then she said:
“His name is Victor Hale.””
I wrote it down.
“Who is he?””
Karen’s voice lowered.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
“He isn’t just a lawyer.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“Then what is he?””
Her answer came slowly.
“He’s Rachel’s old friend.””
May you like
I waited.
“And he’s the reason she started believing Emily was the enemy.””
