Chapter 10: The Custody Plan

I stared at the email until the words stopped looking like words.

*Preparing for custody.*

My fingers felt numb as I scrolled down.

The email wasn’t a confession.

It wasn’t an apology.

It was a plan.

Rachel had written it three months before the patio incident.

Three months before I found Emily bleeding.

Three months before I knew there was anything wrong.

The first sentence made my stomach twist.

*I need to know my options if Daniel refuses to acknowledge the problems with Emily.*

I kept reading.

Every line felt like another piece of my life being pulled apart.

Rachel had written about my daughter like she was a stranger.

Like she was a threat.

*Daniel is emotionally attached to Emily and may not see her behavior clearly.*

I stopped.

Emotionally attached.

That was how she described loving my child.

I kept scrolling.

*I have concerns about his ability to make rational decisions regarding her care.*

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

The person who ignored my daughter’s injury was questioning my ability to protect her.

Then I saw the attachments.

Photos.

Notes.

Messages.

The same things from the black folder.

Rachel had been sending them to a lawyer.

Building a case.

I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned.

Rachel was standing at the bottom of the stairs.

She looked pale.

“You found it.””

It wasn’t a question.

I held up the folder.

“How long?””

She didn’t answer.

“How long have you been planning to take my daughter away?””

Rachel’s face tightened.

“I wasn’t trying to take her away.””

“You contacted a lawyer.””

“Because I was scared.””

“Of me?””

“Of what was happening.””

I stepped closer.

“What was happening, Rachel?””

She looked down.

“Our family was falling apart.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You were making sure it did.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“That’s not fair.””

“Fair?””

I held up the email.

“You wrote that I was blind because I loved my daughter.””

“Because you don’t see what I see.””

“Then why did you need to hide everything?””

Silence.

That was the part she couldn’t explain.

If she truly believed she was protecting Emily, why did every piece of evidence need to be hidden?

Why did every conversation happen behind my back?

I looked at the lawyer’s notes.

Then something caught my attention.

A name.

*Dr. Helen Morris.*

I looked at Rachel.

“You gave her this?””

She froze.

“What?””

“You sent the lawyer information from the psychologist.””

Rachel looked away.

My heart sank.

“You weren’t looking for help.””

“I was.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were shopping for someone who would agree with you.””

Her face changed.

A flash of anger.

“You think you know everything.””

“Then tell me what I don’t know.””

She said nothing.

“Tell me.””

The silence stretched.

Then Rachel whispered:

“She wasn’t always like this.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Emily.””

I felt a wave of anger.

“She’s five.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice became quiet.

“You talk about her like she’s an adult who betrayed you.””

Rachel wiped her face.

“I loved her.””

“Do you?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

And the second it did, I regretted it.

Not because it wasn’t true.

Because I saw how much it hurt.

Rachel sat down.

“I don’t know what happened to me.””

For the first time, she didn’t sound defensive.

She sounded lost.

“I was tired all the time.””

I listened.

“I felt like I disappeared after she was born.””

“That’s not Emily’s fault.””

“I know.””

“Do you?””

Rachel covered her face.

“I started noticing every little thing.””

“What things?””

“The messes. The crying. The questions.””

“She’s a child.””

“I know.””

She looked up.

“But every day I felt more angry.””

The honesty was painful.

Because this was the first real thing she had said.

Not an excuse.

Not a lie.

A confession.

“But instead of asking for help,” I said, “you blamed her.””

Rachel looked down.

“I thought if I could prove there was a reason…”

“A reason for what?””

She swallowed.

“For why I felt this way.””

I looked at her.

“And you chose our daughter.””

Rachel started crying.

“I didn’t mean for it to go this far.””

I looked at the folder.

The pictures.

The recordings.

The custody plan.

“It already did.””

My phone rang.

I answered without looking.

It was Mark.

“Daniel.””

His voice was urgent.

“What happened?””

“I found another thing in the footage.””

I looked at Rachel.

“What now?””

Mark hesitated.

“Before the patio incident, Rachel made a phone call.””

“To who?””

“I don’t know.””

“Did you hear it?””

“Yes.””

My grip tightened.

“What did she say?””

Mark went silent.

Then:

“She wasn’t talking about Emily.””

My heart started pounding.

“What was she talking about?””

His answer came slowly.

“She was talking about making sure you looked unstable.””

I looked at the custody folder in my hand.

And suddenly everything made sense.

The pictures.

The accusations.

The secret appointments.

Rachel wasn’t just preparing to leave.

She was preparing to make sure I lost.
