Chapter 14: The Secret Rachel Protected
The next morning, Rachel showed up at my sister’s house.
She didn’t call.
She didn’t text.
She just appeared.
When I opened the door, she looked exhausted.
“I need to talk to you.””
I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.
“About what?””
“About Emily.””
My expression hardened.
“You don’t get to say her name like nothing happened.””
Rachel flinched.
“I know.””
“No, I don’t think you do.””
She looked down.
“I made mistakes.””
“That’s a very small word for what happened.””
“I know.””
For once, she didn’t argue.
That scared me.
“What do you want?””
She took a deep breath.
“I want to explain.””
“Then explain.””
She looked toward the window.
Toward where Emily was sleeping.
“When she was born, I thought everything would be perfect.””
I stayed silent.
“But after a while, I started feeling like I disappeared.””
I frowned.
“Rachel—”
“I know what you’re going to say.””
“What?””
“That Emily isn’t responsible.””
She swallowed.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Then why?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because I was angry.””
“At her?””
“At everything.””
She wiped her face.
“I hated that I felt that way.””
I didn’t respond.
Because I could understand pain.
But pain did not excuse what she did.
“I started reading things online,” she continued.
“What things?””
“Parenting forums.””
I felt uneasy.
“About what?””
“Children who manipulate.””
I stared at her.
“And you convinced yourself Emily was one of them.””
Rachel didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Then I met Victor.””
The name changed the air between us.
I looked at her.
“You met him four months ago.””
Her face changed.
“How do you know that?””
“I know enough.””
She looked scared.
“Daniel…”
“What did Victor tell you?””
Rachel sat down on the porch steps.
“He said I was being ignored.””
I waited.
“He said people dismiss mothers because they assume they’re emotional.””
My stomach tightened.
“He made you feel understood.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
“He asked questions.””
“What questions?””
Rachel looked away.
“About you.””
I felt cold.
“He wanted to know how you reacted when I disagreed with you.””
“Why?””
“He said it would help him understand the family dynamic.””
I laughed bitterly.
“He was building a case.””
Rachel didn’t deny it.
That was the first time she admitted the truth without fighting.
“Why didn’t you stop?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because part of me liked that someone believed me.””
The answer was painful.
Not because it justified anything.
Because it explained how far she had fallen.
Then she whispered:
“But there’s something you don’t know.””
I waited.
“Victor wasn’t the first person I talked to.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“Who was?””
Rachel looked at me.
“A social worker.””
My heart dropped.
“When?””
“Two months ago.””
“Why?””
She looked ashamed.
“I wanted to report concerns about Emily.””
I stared at her.
“Did you?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
Rachel’s voice became small.
“Because they asked questions I couldn’t answer.””
“What questions?””
She looked down.
“They asked if Emily had ever hurt anyone.””
Silence.
“And?””
“I said no.””
“They asked if Emily had threatened anyone.””
“No.””
“They asked if Emily showed fear around you.””
Rachel stopped.
I understood.
“That was the question you couldn’t answer.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
Because she knew.
The problem was never Emily’s behavior.
The problem was Emily’s fear.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Michael.
*We found something about Victor. Call me immediately.*
I looked at Rachel.
“What did you find?”” she asked.
I didn’t answer.
Because for the first time, I saw something in her face.
Fear of Victor.
Not me.
Not losing custody.
Victor.
I called Michael.
He answered instantly.
“Daniel, listen carefully.””
“What happened?””
“Victor Hale has done this before.””
My stomach tightened.
“Done what?””
“Created custody cases around alleged child behavior issues.””
I froze.
“How many?””
“Three that we know of.””
I looked at Rachel.
“And?””
Michael lowered his voice.
“In every case, the parent who hired him ended up isolated from the other parent.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because that’s how he wins.””
I felt a chill.
“What do you mean?””
“He doesn’t just help people get custody.””
May you like
My grip tightened.
“He helps people control the story.””
