Chapter 11: The Recording She Never Knew Existed
I drove to Mark’s house before I even thought about where I was going.
My mind was moving faster than my body.
Every memory I had with Rachel was being rewritten.
Every argument.
Every apology.
Every time she told me I was overreacting.
I had believed I was failing to understand her.
Now I wondered if she had been making sure I never understood.
Mark opened the door before I knocked.
“You look like you haven’t slept.””
“I haven’t.””
He stepped aside.
“I copied the audio file.””
We went straight to his office.
The video was already open.
“I isolated the sound,” Mark said.
“I don’t care if it’s messy.””
“I think you need to hear every word.””
He pressed play.
At first, there was only wind.
Then Rachel’s voice.
“I can’t keep doing this.””
A second voice answered.
A man.
I didn’t recognize him.
“Then you need to make a decision.””
My entire body went still.
“Who is that?”” I whispered.
Mark shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
The recording continued.
Rachel sounded upset.
“He won’t believe me.””
The man replied:
“Then make him believe you.””
A cold feeling moved through my chest.
“How?””
“Create a pattern.””
I stopped breathing.
Rachel was silent.
Then:
“I already have pictures.””
The man answered:
“Good.””
The recording crackled.
“You need documentation.””
I stared at the screen.
Documentation.
The exact word Rachel used.
The exact word in her folder.
The exact word she used to justify everything.
The man continued:
“Once people see enough examples, they stop asking questions.””
My hands curled into fists.
Rachel replied:
“What if Daniel finds out?””
The man laughed.
“Then make sure he looks like the problem.””
The recording ended.
I sat there in silence.
Mark watched me carefully.
“Daniel…”
“Who is he?””
“I don’t know.””
“Can you find out?””
“I’m trying.””
I stood up.
“I need to know.””
When I returned home, Rachel wasn’t there.
For a moment, I thought she had left.
Then I saw a note on the kitchen counter.
*We need space. I took some things.*
I stared at it.
No mention of Emily.
No question about how she was doing.
Nothing.
My phone rang.
My sister.
“Daniel?””
“Yeah?””
“Where is Rachel?””
“I don’t know.””
She hesitated.
“I need to tell you something.””
“What?””
“I got a call from her.””
My stomach tightened.
“When?””
“What did she say?””
My sister went quiet.
“She asked me if I would testify.””
I froze.
“Testify about what?””
“She said she’s afraid you’ll use Emily against her.””
I closed my eyes.
“She’s already building another story.””
“Yes.””
I sat down.
Then my sister said:
“Daniel, there’s something else.””
“What?””
“She asked me if I remembered how angry you used to get.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“She’s telling people you’re aggressive.””
I looked around the house.
The same house where I had spent years trying to build a family.
“She’s setting me up.””
My sister didn’t answer.
Because she knew.
After the call ended, I walked upstairs.
I opened Emily’s bedroom door.
Her stuffed animals were lined up on the bed.
Her drawings covered the wall.
Her little nightlight was still on.
I sat beside her bed.
And then I noticed something.
A small notebook under her pillow.
At first, I thought it was a drawing book.
But when I opened it, my hands started shaking.
The pages were filled with writing.
A child’s handwriting.
Simple sentences.
Broken words.
*Mommy was mad today.*
*I tried to be good.*
*Daddy likes when I smile.*
I turned the page.
My breathing stopped.
*Mommy said I make her life hard.*
Another page.
*I don’t want Daddy to leave.*
Then the last page.
The newest one.
Written two days before the patio accident.
The letters were uneven.
Like she was crying while writing.
*Mommy said if Daddy knew everything, he would hate me too.*
I closed the notebook.
My daughter had been carrying this alone.
For months.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
One message.
*You found her diary. Good. Now ask why Rachel wanted it hidden.*
I stared at the message.
May you like
Then another appeared.
*Because the diary proves she knew exactly what she was doing.*
