Chapter 9: The Warehouse Confession
At 7:55 p.m., Marcus stood outside the old Carter warehouse.
The building had belonged to his grandfather for nearly forty years. It was where Edward had started his construction business before expanding into several successful property developments.
The metal doors were rusted.
The windows were dusty.
A faded sign still displayed the Carter family name.
Richard stood beside Marcus.
Daniel had insisted on coming despite Peter's instructions.
Vanessa remained in the car, while Brianna had been left at home with a trusted neighbor.
“Are you sure about this?”” Richard asked.
Marcus looked at him.
“No.””
Richard swallowed.
“Then let's go back.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I'm tired of running away from things other people did.””
Daniel checked his watch.
“Let's stay together. Nobody signs anything or hands over personal documents.””
They entered.
The smell of old wood and machine oil filled the air.
A single light flickered near the back office.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“Right on time.””
Peter Lawson stepped into view.
He wore a dark coat and held a thick folder.
Marcus recognized him from the photograph Daniel had shown earlier.
Peter smiled.
“Marcus. You look just like your grandfather.””
Marcus didn't return the smile.
“Give me the documents.””
Peter laughed.
“Straight to business. I respect that.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You've been manipulating my family.””
Peter glanced at him.
“Have I?””
“You told Vanessa you could recover money from Edward's estate.””
“I told her what she wanted to hear.””
Vanessa stepped out from behind Daniel.
“You lied to me.””
Peter shrugged.
“You believed me because you wanted to.””
Her face crumpled.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Enough. Where are Grandpa's documents?””
Peter lifted the folder.
“First, I want to explain something.””
Daniel interrupted.
“You can explain it to the investigators.””
Peter laughed.
“Always the lawyer.””
He placed the folder on an old workbench.
“Edward Carter was a stubborn man. He believed he could control everything even from his hospital bed.””
Marcus stared at him.
“What did you do to him?””
“Nothing. He was already dying.””
“Then why did you want his trust changed?””
Peter's smile disappeared.
“Because your grandfather had money sitting in accounts that could have been used to benefit the entire family.””
Marcus shook his head.
“He left instructions.””
“Instructions written by an old man who didn't understand modern financial opportunities.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Careful, Peter.””
Peter ignored him.
“Your grandfather offered me a business arrangement years ago. We were supposed to develop a commercial property together. But when he discovered a discrepancy in the financial records, he ended the partnership.””
Marcus frowned.
“What discrepancy?””
Peter's jaw tightened.
“He accused me of taking money.””
“Did you?””
Peter looked away.
Richard suddenly understood.
“You stole from him.””
Peter laughed.
“Your father had more money than he knew what to do with.””
Daniel spoke firmly.
“That's not an answer.””
Peter slammed his hand against the workbench.
“Fine! I moved funds between accounts. I intended to return them. Edward found out and destroyed my career.””
Marcus stared.
“So you came after his inheritance?””
“I came after what I was owed.””
“You were owed nothing.””
Peter's eyes narrowed.
“You sound just like him.””
He opened the folder.
Inside were several documents.
“The truth is that your grandfather changed his final instructions because he discovered something about the family.””
Marcus felt his heartbeat quicken.
“What?””
Peter removed a printed statement.
“Someone had been withdrawing money from his business accounts for years.””
Richard looked confused.
“Who?””
Peter smiled.
“Your father.””
Richard froze.
“What?””
Marcus immediately turned toward Peter.
“That's a lie.””
Peter shrugged.
“Then explain the transfers.””
He handed Daniel the statement.
Daniel studied it.
“These transactions require verification.””
Peter laughed.
“Of course. Everything requires verification when it involves your favorite client.””
Richard looked horrified.
“I never took money from my father.””
Peter turned toward him.
“Then why did Edward have records showing repeated transfers to an account under your name?””
Richard stared.
Marcus looked at his father.
“Dad?””
Richard shook his head.
“I don't know what he's talking about.””
Peter smiled.
“Perhaps you should ask your wife.””
Vanessa gasped.
Richard turned toward her.
“What?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Richard, I swear…”
Peter interrupted.
“She knows.””
Vanessa began crying.
Marcus looked between them.
“Knows what?””
Peter leaned against the workbench.
“Your grandfather discovered that Richard had been sending money to Vanessa for years without documenting it properly. Some of it came from business funds. Some came from personal accounts.””
Richard's face reddened.
“That money was mine!””
“Not all of it.””
Daniel examined the statement more closely.
“Peter, these records are incomplete.””
“Convenient.””
Daniel pointed to the page.
“Several transaction references are missing. These documents cannot establish who authorized the transfers.””
Peter shrugged.
“Then perhaps the video will.””
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
“Give me the flash drive.””
Peter pulled a small silver drive from his pocket.
“Not so fast.””
He looked at Richard.
“Your father recorded a statement. In it, he explains exactly why he changed the inheritance arrangements.””
Richard's voice became strained.
“Play it.””
Peter smiled.
“First, I want Marcus to sign a document.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“No.””
Peter placed a paper on the workbench.
“It's a simple acknowledgment. Marcus agrees to release any claim against the disputed accounts, and everyone walks away.””
Marcus looked at the paper.
It was a settlement agreement.
But one paragraph stood out.
It required him to surrender all rights to the separate account mentioned in his grandfather's letter.
Marcus looked up.
“You want me to give up something I haven't even seen?””
Peter smiled.
“It's the sensible thing to do.””
Richard shook his head.
“Don't sign it.””
Marcus glanced at him.
For once, his father was giving him the right advice.
Daniel picked up the document.
“This agreement is unacceptable.””
Peter's smile faded.
“Then nobody gets the video.””
He reached for the flash drive.
But Marcus suddenly remembered the photograph.
The truth is kept where the first promise was made.
He looked toward the floor.
Near the old workbench was a faded red wooden plank.
He moved toward it.
Peter noticed.
“Where are you going?””
Marcus knelt.
He ran his fingers along the board.
There was a small gap near one edge.
He pulled.
The floorboard lifted.
Beneath it sat a metal container.
Peter's expression changed instantly.
“Don't touch that!””
Marcus opened the container.
Inside was a sealed envelope, an old recording device, and a small black notebook.
Daniel rushed over.
“Marcus, don't remove anything else until we document it.””
Marcus looked at the envelope.
His grandfather's handwriting was unmistakable.
*For Marcus. Open only when the truth is finally in front of you.*
He opened it.
A single photograph fell onto the floor.
It showed Edward standing beside Richard and another man.
Marcus recognized the stranger.
It was Peter.
But that wasn't what made him freeze.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten date.
The date was six months before Grandpa died.
And beneath it were the words:
Richard knows what happened to the original money.
Marcus slowly turned toward his father.
“Dad?””
Richard stared at the photograph.
His lips trembled.
Then he whispered:
“I can explain.””
Peter suddenly moved toward the container.
Daniel blocked him.
“Don't.””
Peter shoved him.
The two men stumbled against the workbench.
Richard grabbed Marcus's arm.
“Listen to me. Your grandfather didn't tell you everything.””
Marcus pulled away.
“Then tell me now!””
Richard looked at the black notebook.
His eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't steal the money from your grandfather.””
Marcus waited.
Richard swallowed.
“I borrowed it because I was trying to save someone.””
“Who?””
Richard looked toward the warehouse entrance.
Then he said a name that made Vanessa collapse into a chair.
“Your mother.””
Marcus went completely still.
His biological mother had died when he was twelve.
And according to everything Richard had told him, she had never been involved in the Carter family's financial affairs.
“What does Mom have to do with this?””
Richard lowered his head.
“Your mother didn't die the way I told you.””
The warehouse seemed to fall silent.
Even Peter stopped struggling.
Marcus stared at his father.
“What are you saying?””
Richard's voice broke.
“Your mother was alive when your grandfather discovered the missing money. And before she disappeared, she left behind a document that could destroy everything.””
Marcus gripped the edge of the workbench.
“Where is she?””
Richard looked him directly in the eyes.
“I don't know.””
Then Daniel picked up the old recording device.
A small red light began flashing.
It was already recording.
And from the speaker came Edward Carter's unmistakable voice.
“If Marcus has finally discovered the warehouse, then Richard has no choice but to tell him the truth…”
A pause followed.
Then Edward continued.
“Because the person who caused your mother's disappearance was never Peter Lawson.””
Marcus stopped breathing.
His grandfather's voice became quieter.
“It was someone who is still living under your roof.””
Vanessa began screaming.
“TURN THAT OFF!””
May you like
But the recording continued.
And the next name Edward spoke changed everything.
