Chapter 1: The Lie That Almost Destroyed Him

“DAD! HE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING! I SAW EVERYTHING!””

Lily's tiny voice shattered the silence in the bedroom.

But just thirty seconds earlier, nobody had believed Marcus.

Not his father. Not his stepmother. Not even the people who had watched him grow up.

And the girl who had screamed for help was standing there with a secret she thought nobody could expose.

It all started on an ordinary Saturday afternoon.

Marcus Carter, twenty-three, had just returned from his part-time job at a local hardware store. His black work boots were covered in dust, and his gray T-shirt smelled faintly of sawdust and machine oil.

He was heading upstairs when his seventeen-year-old stepsister, Brianna, appeared at the end of the hallway.

“Marcus, wait.””

He stopped.

“What?””

“Dad wants you downstairs.””

“Then why don't you go get him?””

Brianna folded her arms.

“Wow. You're always so rude.””

Marcus sighed.

“Brianna, I'm tired. I've been working since seven this morning.””

She stepped closer.

“Do you think you're better than everyone because Dad keeps paying for your college?””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

“Everything.””

He shook his head and tried to walk past her.

That was when Brianna grabbed his wrist.

“Come with me.””

“Let go.””

“I need to show you something.””

“Brianna, whatever it is, I'm not interested.””

But she suddenly pulled him toward her bedroom.

Marcus stumbled through the doorway.

“Hey! What the hell are you doing?””

Brianna slammed the door shut.

He turned toward her, confused.

“Are you out of your mind?””

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at him with an expression he had never seen before.

Then she smiled.

It wasn't a nervous smile.

It wasn't playful.

It was calculated.

Before Marcus could react, Brianna grabbed the front of her own blouse and ripped the fabric.

RIIIP!

Marcus froze.

“What are you doing?””

She threw the torn blouse onto the carpet, ran her fingers through her hair, and deliberately knocked over a small decorative lamp.

Then she rushed toward the bedroom door.

“Brianna, stop!””

She kicked the door.

Once.

Twice.

Then she screamed.

“HELP! SOMEBODY HELP ME!””

Marcus stared at her.

“What the hell?!””

“HELP! MARCUS IS TRYING TO HURT ME!””

“ARE YOU CRAZY? I DIDN'T TOUCH YOU!””

The footsteps came immediately.

Heavy footsteps.

Richard Carter, Marcus's father, was the first through the door. Behind him came Vanessa, his wife and Brianna's mother.

Richard took one look at the room.

His daughter stood beside the bed with torn clothing and messy hair.

Marcus stood near the opposite wall, his hands raised in disbelief.

“WHAT HAPPENED HERE?”” Richard thundered.

Brianna immediately ran to her mother.

“Mom!””

Vanessa wrapped her arms around her daughter.

“Oh, sweetheart. What did he do?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Dad, listen to me. She dragged me in here!””

Richard's face turned red.

“Shut your mouth!””

“But I swear—”

“WHY ARE YOU IN HER BEDROOM?””

“Because she pulled me in!””

Brianna buried her face against Vanessa's shoulder.

“He wouldn't leave me alone,” she whispered.

Marcus looked at her as if he couldn't believe what he was hearing.

“Brianna! You know that's not true!””

Richard crossed the room.

SMACK!

The slap echoed through the bedroom.

Marcus's head turned sharply to one side.

For a moment, nobody moved.

His cheek burned.

He slowly looked back at his father.

“Dad…”

Richard pointed toward the hallway.

“Get out of my house!””

Marcus blinked.

“What?””

“You heard me. Get out!””

“Dad, you didn't even ask what happened!””

“I DON'T NEED TO ASK!””

Vanessa tightened her arms around Brianna.

“Richard, we need to protect our daughter.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Protect her from what? I didn't do anything!””

Brianna sniffled dramatically.

“He's always been mean to me.””

Marcus laughed once, bitterly.

“Mean to you? You took my laptop last week and deleted my college application files!””

“Marcus!”” Vanessa snapped.

“Don't you dare blame her!””

“I'm not blaming her. I'm telling you what happened!””

Richard grabbed Marcus by the shoulder.

“Leave. Now.””

Then a small voice came from the doorway.

“Daddy, stop!””

Everyone turned.

Lily, Richard's eight-year-old daughter from his previous marriage, stood in the hallway wearing pink pajamas and clutching her favorite teddy bear.

Her eyes were wet.

“Lily, go to your room,” Vanessa ordered.

But Lily didn't move.

She walked into the bedroom.

“Marcus didn't do anything.””

Richard frowned.

“What did you say?””

“I saw everything!””

Brianna's expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Marcus noticed.

Lily raised her teddy bear.

“My teddy bear saw it too!””

Vanessa gave a confused laugh.

“Sweetheart, this isn't a game.””

“It's not a game!”” Lily protested.

“There's a camera inside Mr. Buttons!””

Marcus stared at the teddy bear.

Mr. Buttons had been Lily's favorite toy for almost two years. Richard had bought it for her after her mother passed away.

Lily hugged it every night.

Marcus had even repaired one of its loose buttons that morning.

Richard looked at the toy.

“There's a camera in there?””

Lily nodded.

“Marcus helped me put it there because I wanted to make videos of my toys.””

Brianna's face went pale.

Richard slowly turned toward his stepdaughter.

“Brianna…”

She swallowed.

“What?””

May you like

“Why are you suddenly so quiet?””

And for the first time since she had started screaming, Brianna had absolutely nothing to say.
