Chapter 2: The Camera That Changed Everything
“Give me that teddy bear.””
Brianna's voice was sharp.
Lily immediately pulled Mr. Buttons against her chest.
“No!””
Vanessa frowned.
“Brianna, calm down.””
“Mom, that thing is mine! Lily stole it from my room!””
Lily shook her head.
“No, it isn't! Daddy gave it to me!””
Richard raised one hand.
“Enough. Nobody is touching anything until we know what's going on.””
He looked at Lily.
“Sweetheart, are you sure there's a camera inside?””
Lily nodded quickly.
“Marcus showed me. It's really small. He said I should only use it to record my toys.””
Marcus touched his burning cheek.
“Dad, she's telling the truth. I helped her put a little camera inside the bear last month. She wanted to make videos.””
Richard looked at him.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I didn't think it mattered!””
Brianna let out a frustrated breath.
“This is ridiculous. Are we seriously going to believe an eight-year-old over me?””
Lily's lower lip trembled.
“I'm not lying.””
Brianna rolled her eyes.
“Children imagine things all the time.””
Marcus took a step forward.
“Don't talk to her like that.””
Richard immediately raised his voice.
“Marcus, stay where you are.””
The young man stopped.
He looked at his father with disbelief.
Even now, Richard was more concerned about controlling him than discovering the truth.
Lily reached toward Marcus.
“Can you help me open Mr. Buttons?””
Marcus nodded.
“Of course.””
He knelt beside her.
But Brianna suddenly stepped between them.
“No!””
The room went silent.
Richard narrowed his eyes.
“Brianna, move.””
“I said no!””
“Why?””
“Because I don't want her destroying my teddy bear!””
Lily looked confused.
“But it's mine.””
Vanessa touched Brianna's arm.
“Sweetheart, what's wrong?””
“Nothing! I just don't want everyone treating me like a criminal!””
Marcus slowly stood.
“Then you shouldn't have lied.””
Brianna glared at him.
“You're enjoying this, aren't you?””
“Enjoying what? Getting slapped by my own father?””
Richard looked away.
For the first time, his expression showed a hint of uncertainty.
Lily carefully turned the teddy bear around.
“See? There's a little opening here.””
She pointed to a tiny seam beneath its left arm.
Marcus examined it.
“That should be the compartment.””
He gently opened the fabric flap and removed a small black camera module.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Richard stared.
“Is that really a camera?””
Marcus nodded.
“Looks like it.””
Brianna crossed her arms.
“Even if it is, it doesn't prove anything. Maybe the video doesn't show what Lily thinks it shows.””
Richard looked at her.
“Then we watch it.””
Brianna's eyes widened.
“Dad, no!””
The answer came too quickly.
Richard noticed.
“Why not?””
“Because it's private!””
“It's a recording of what happened in your room. If you're telling the truth, what are you afraid of?””
Brianna turned toward Vanessa.
“Mom, say something!””
Vanessa looked between her daughter and Richard.
“Richard, perhaps we should calm down first. We don't know what that camera recorded.””
“Exactly,” Richard replied.
“That's why we're going to find out.””
Marcus reached for his phone.
“I can connect it to my laptop.””
Richard nodded.
“Do it.””
A few minutes later, they were gathered around Marcus's laptop in the living room.
Brianna sat beside Vanessa, repeatedly tapping her fingernails against the armrest.
Lily sat on the floor, holding Mr. Buttons.
Richard stood behind the sofa.
Marcus connected the camera.
A folder appeared.
There were several short recordings.
Most showed Lily playing with her toys, arranging stuffed animals, and talking to them in her bedroom.
Then Marcus found the file with the correct timestamp.
He clicked it.
The screen showed the upstairs hallway.
The camera angle was slightly tilted because Lily had left the bear on a small shelf outside her bedroom.
But the image was clear.
Brianna appeared.
She looked down the hallway.
Then she looked toward the staircase.
After checking that nobody was watching, she walked toward Marcus.
Richard leaned forward.
“That's Brianna.””
Nobody answered.
The recording continued.
Brianna grabbed Marcus's wrist.
The audio picked up her voice.
“Come with me.””
Marcus pulled back.
“No. Let go.””
She dragged him into her bedroom.
Then the camera recorded the bedroom door closing.
Richard's jaw tightened.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
Lily pointed.
“See, Daddy? She pulled him!””
Marcus said nothing.
He simply watched his father.
The video continued.
A few seconds later, Brianna reappeared in the hallway.
She looked directly toward the staircase.
Then she returned to her room.
There was a pause.
A loud ripping sound came from inside.
Then her screams.
“HELP! SOMEBODY HELP ME! MARCUS IS TRYING TO HURT ME!””
Vanessa slowly stood up.
“Oh my God.””
Richard's face had gone completely pale.
Marcus turned toward him.
“Now do you believe me?””
Richard opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, Brianna lunged toward the laptop.
“TURN IT OFF!””
Marcus pulled it away.
“Don't touch it!””
Brianna began crying.
“You're all making me look like a monster!””
Lily looked up at her.
“But you did it.””
“SHUT UP!””
“Brianna!”” Vanessa shouted.
The little girl flinched.
Marcus immediately moved between them.
“Don't you dare yell at her.””
Richard raised his hand.
“Everyone stop!””
He looked at Brianna.
“Explain yourself.””
Brianna wiped her cheeks.
“I was just joking.””
Marcus stared at her.
“A joke?””
“I didn't think Dad would actually slap you!””
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Silence.
Richard slowly lowered his hand.
“What?””
Brianna's mouth fell open.
“I mean…”
“You knew I would react like that?””
She looked at Vanessa.
“Mom…”
Richard took a step toward her.
“Did you plan this?””
Brianna shook her head.
“No. I was angry. Marcus always gets everything.
You bought him a car. You paid for his college. You never give me anything!””
Marcus laughed in disbelief.
“You have a brand-new SUV sitting in the driveway!””
“That's not the point!””
Richard's voice dropped.
“Then what is the point?””
Brianna looked down.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then she lifted her head.
“Fine. You want the truth?””
Marcus frowned.
“What more truth could there possibly be?””
Brianna looked directly at him.
“I wanted you gone.””
Richard stared at her.
“Gone?””
“Yes! Out of this house. Out of our lives!””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“Why?””
Brianna's eyes filled with tears again, but this time her voice sounded different.
“Because if you stay, Dad is going to find out what you've been hiding.””
Marcus went completely still.
Richard turned toward his son.
“What is she talking about?””
Marcus looked at Brianna.
May you like
And suddenly, the camera footage didn't feel like the end of the story.
It felt like the beginning.
