Chapter 6: The Daughter Who Knew Too Much

Richard stared at his daughter.

For several seconds, he seemed unable to understand the words.

“You?””

Brianna nodded.

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

“Brianna, don't say another word.””

But the teenager pulled away.

“No, Mom. I'm done.””

Richard's voice trembled.

“You called my father?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Brianna looked down at her hands.

“Because I was angry.””

Richard shook his head.

“Angry about what?””

“Everything!””

She suddenly stood.

“Marcus got everything! Grandpa took him everywhere. He bought him gifts.

He talked about his future. He even gave him money when he needed it.””

Marcus stared.

“You were invited to every family gathering.””

“That's not the same!””

“What did you expect? Grandpa wasn't obligated to give you my inheritance.””

Brianna's eyes flashed.

“I wanted him to leave something for me too!””

Richard looked devastated.

“So you called a dying man and threatened him?””

“I didn't threaten him!””

Daniel spoke calmly.

“The voicemail clearly suggests pressure was being applied.””

Brianna turned toward him.

“I was seventeen! I didn't know what I was doing!””

Daniel replied, “That may be relevant, but it doesn't change what happened.””

Vanessa began crying again.

“Richard, please. She's our daughter.””

Richard looked at her.

“And Marcus is my son.””

The words silenced the room.

Marcus stood near the window, staring at the garden below.

He had spent years trying to make the blended family work.

He had helped Brianna with her homework, driven her to school when Vanessa was busy, and bought Lily birthday presents with his own paycheck.

He had never expected gratitude.

He had simply wanted peace.

Now he was beginning to wonder whether that peace had been built on his willingness to ignore things that were wrong.

Daniel placed the voicemail transcript on the dresser.

“There's another important detail.””

Richard turned.

“What?””

“The call came from a phone registered to Brianna. However, the follow-up emails concerning the trust originated from a different device.””

Marcus frowned.

“Whose device?””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“An old laptop registered to you.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. That's impossible.””

Brianna looked up.

“Mom…”

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“What?””

Brianna swallowed.

“You told me to use it.””

The room went completely silent.

Richard slowly turned toward his wife.

“Use it for what?””

Vanessa looked at Brianna.

“Don't you dare.””

Brianna's voice became smaller.

“You said we needed to make Marcus leave before Grandpa's attorney completed the paperwork.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“What paperwork?””

Vanessa shook her head repeatedly.

“She is confused. She's trying to protect herself.””

Brianna began crying.

“You said if Dad thought Marcus was dangerous, he wouldn't let him stay here.””

Richard stepped backward.

“Vanessa…”

She reached for him.

“Richard, listen to me.””

He moved away.

“Did you help her?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“I was trying to protect our family.””

“By framing my son?””

“I never wanted anyone hurt!””

Marcus turned around.

“Then why did you let her do it?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because you were going to destroy everything!””

Marcus stared.

“What did I destroy?””

“You were always the favorite! Your father gave you opportunities that he never gave Brianna. You had a future secured before you even graduated college!””

Richard interrupted.

“That's because Edward worked his entire life to provide for his grandchildren!””

“And what about us?”” Vanessa shouted.

“What about the life we were trying to build?””

Richard's expression hardened.

“You don't build a life by stealing from someone else.””

Lily, who had been standing quietly beside the door, suddenly spoke.

“Daddy?””

Richard turned.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Can I tell you something?””

He knelt.

“Of course.””

Lily looked toward Brianna.

“Brianna told me not to tell anyone about the camera.””

Brianna closed her eyes.

Richard frowned.

“When?””

“Last week. She saw Mr. Buttons on the shelf and asked me if it was recording.””

Marcus looked at Lily.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Lily shrugged.

“She said cameras were bad and I might get in trouble.””

Richard gently touched her shoulder.

“What else did she say?””

Lily looked down.

“She said if I ever saw Marcus doing something bad, I should tell Daddy.””

Marcus felt a chill.

Richard looked at Brianna.

“Did you know about the camera before today?””

Brianna didn't answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Richard, I think we need to preserve all electronic evidence. We also need to contact the bank immediately and prevent any further attempted transfers.””

Richard nodded.

“Do whatever you need to do.””

Daniel gathered the documents.

“I'll also contact the authorities regarding the suspected fraud and identity misuse. Everyone should avoid deleting messages or altering devices.””

Vanessa sat motionless.

Brianna began crying harder.

“Dad, please. I didn't mean for it to go this far.””

Richard looked at her.

“You deliberately made me believe my son was hurting you.””

“I know.””

“You knew I might throw him out.””

“I was angry!””

“And you thought that made it acceptable?””

Brianna covered her face.

“No.””

Richard looked toward Marcus.

“I can't undo what happened today.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“No, you can't.””

“I want you to know I believe you.””

Marcus looked at his father.

“You should have believed me before Lily had to prove it.””

Richard lowered his head.

“I know.””

For the first time, Marcus saw his father cry.

But he didn't rush to comfort him.

Some wounds needed more than an apology.

Daniel closed his briefcase.

“There's one more thing I haven't mentioned.””

Richard looked up.

“What?””

Daniel removed a small envelope from an inner compartment.

“Edward instructed me to deliver this directly to Marcus if anyone attempted to manipulate the trust or falsely accuse him of misconduct.””

Marcus stared at the envelope.

His name was written across the front in his grandfather's familiar handwriting.

He took it carefully.

His fingers trembled.

Richard stepped closer.

“Do you want me to stay?””

Marcus looked at the envelope.

Then at his father.

“I think I need to read this alone.””

He walked into the hallway.

Lily followed him, carrying Mr. Buttons.

Marcus entered his bedroom and sat on the edge of his bed.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter and a small brass key.

He unfolded the letter.

My dear Marcus,

If you are reading this, someone has attempted to take something from you that I worked very hard to protect.

I wish I could have been there to help you.

But there is something you must understand.

The inheritance was never the greatest thing I left you.

Marcus swallowed.

He continued reading.

There is another account. One I deliberately kept separate from the family trust. It contains something that belongs to you, but before you access it, you must speak to the person I appointed.

His name is written on the document inside the locked box.

Marcus turned the letter over.

There was a final sentence.

And Marcus, if Richard is standing beside you when you read this, do not assume he knows the whole truth.

Marcus froze.

He read the sentence again.

Then a third time.

His father had been with him only minutes earlier.

What could Richard possibly be hiding?

He looked at the brass key.

A small number had been engraved into its surface.

*214.*

Suddenly, his phone vibrated.

An unknown number appeared.

A message came through.

*Marcus, this is Daniel. I need you to come downstairs immediately. Your grandfather's letter has just triggered something we weren't expecting.*

A second message followed.

*Someone has already accessed the locked box.*

Marcus stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*And the person who signed for it was your father.*
