Chapter 5: The Promise Grandpa Never Told Anyone

Nobody moved.

Vanessa looked as though someone had pulled the floor out from beneath her.

Richard slowly turned toward his wife.

“What is she talking about?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She's upset. She's saying things she doesn't understand.””

Brianna laughed bitterly.

“Oh, I understand perfectly.””

“Brianna, stop,” Vanessa whispered.

“No! You've spent years telling me to keep quiet. I'm tired of protecting you!””

Richard stepped between them.

“Protecting her from what?””

Daniel closed his briefcase.

“Perhaps this conversation should continue with everyone calm and with appropriate legal representation.””

But Richard wasn't interested in waiting.

“Daniel, my father died six months ago. My daughter is talking about something that happened that night. I want to know what she's referring to.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

He remembered the night clearly.

His grandfather, Edward Carter, had been in the hospital for nearly three weeks. Marcus had visited him every evening after work.

On the last night, Edward had asked to speak with him privately.

He had held Marcus's hand and said something Marcus never forgot.

“Never confuse having money with having family, son. The people who love you won't need to take anything from you.””

Marcus had assumed it was simply another one of his grandfather's lessons.

Now he wondered whether it had been a warning.

Daniel turned toward Richard.

“Edward contacted me the evening before he passed away. He asked me to prepare an additional document.””

“What document?””

“A private letter of instruction.””

Richard frowned.

“Why wasn't I told?””

“Because your father specifically asked that it remain confidential until certain conditions were met.””

Richard's expression darkened.

“What conditions?””

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“An unauthorized attempt to alter the trust.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“So Grandpa knew someone might try this?””

“He suspected someone might.””

Vanessa sat on the edge of the bed.

“This is insane.””

Brianna folded her arms.

“Then explain why you went to see Grandpa alone.””

Vanessa looked up sharply.

“Don't.””

“You told me you were going to say goodbye. But you weren't.””

Richard stared at her.

“Vanessa?””

She pressed her hands together.

“I went to the hospital because I wanted to talk to Edward about the family.””

“What family?””

“Us.””

Richard's voice became colder.

“Be specific.””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“Your father had promised to help with the household expenses. He had said the inheritance would eventually benefit everyone.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. Grandpa left that money to me.””

“I know what the will said.””

“Then why are you talking about it benefiting everyone?””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Because families share!””

Marcus gave a disbelieving laugh.

“You never asked me to share anything. You simply expected me to hand it over.””

Richard looked between them.

“Vanessa, did you ask Edward for money?””

She didn't answer.

Daniel quietly placed a copy of a document on the dresser.

“This is a record of a meeting Edward requested with me. He documented concerns about pressure being placed on him regarding the inheritance.””

Vanessa stared at the paper.

Richard picked it up.

“What pressure?””

Daniel explained.

“Edward told me someone had repeatedly suggested that Marcus was too young to manage the funds and that the money should be placed under family supervision.””

Marcus turned toward Vanessa.

“Was that you?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I was trying to protect everyone!””

“From what?””

“From being left behind!””

Her voice broke.

“Richard had promised me we would have a secure future. But every time your father discussed money, it was always Marcus, Marcus, Marcus.””

Richard looked stunned.

“You told me you didn't care about the inheritance.””

“I didn't want to seem greedy!””

Marcus stared at her.

“So you decided to get it another way?””

Vanessa covered her face.

Brianna suddenly spoke.

“She didn't do it alone.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa lowered her hands.

“Brianna…”

The teenager looked at Daniel.

“Ask him about the second beneficiary.””

Daniel's expression changed.

Richard frowned.

“What second beneficiary?””

Daniel opened his briefcase again.

He removed a sealed envelope.

“Edward's original trust contained a conditional provision. If Marcus died before reaching a specified age without a qualifying family successor, certain assets would be distributed to a charitable foundation.””

Marcus stared.

“I'm not dead.””

Daniel nodded.

“Correct.””

Brianna looked at him.

“But if he became legally incapable of managing the trust, someone could petition for temporary guardianship.””

Richard's face changed.

“Who?””

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a document bearing Edward's signature.

Marcus leaned forward.

The page contained a provision naming a potential successor trustee.

And beneath it was a handwritten note.

Daniel read it aloud.

“If anyone attempts to obtain control of Marcus's inheritance through intimidation, deception, or false accusations, my attorney must investigate the matter before granting any authority.””

Richard lowered the paper.

“False accusations…”

He looked toward Brianna.

Her face had lost all color.

Marcus slowly understood.

The bedroom incident hadn't simply been about getting him kicked out.

If his father believed he was dangerous, if the family disowned him, if he became isolated and financially vulnerable, someone might have been able to gain control of his trust.

Daniel's voice was quiet.

“Edward was worried that Marcus might be targeted because of his inheritance.””

Richard looked sick.

“Who told him that?””

Daniel turned to Vanessa.

“Your father-in-law's private notes mention a conversation with someone in this household.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I never threatened him.””

Daniel nodded.

“I didn't say you did.””

He removed one final document.

“This is a transcript of a voicemail Edward received two days before his death.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Who left it?””

Daniel hesitated.

“An unidentified female caller.””

He pressed play on his phone.

A woman's voice filled the room.

“Edward, you need to understand. Marcus cannot keep everything. If you don't change the arrangement, things are going to become very difficult for this family.””

The recording ended.

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“Is that you?””

Vanessa began sobbing.

But Brianna was staring at the floor.

Daniel noticed.

“Brianna, do you recognize that voice?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel studied her.

“Listen carefully. If you know something, now is the time to tell the truth.””

Brianna looked toward her mother.

Then toward Marcus.

Finally, she whispered:

“It wasn't Mom.””

Vanessa stopped crying.

Richard stepped forward.

“Then who was it?””

May you like

Brianna's eyes filled with tears.

“It was me.””
