Chapter 8: The Meeting Daniel Never Expected
At 7:45 p.m., I sat in a private conference room at the Grand Sterling.
Grace was asleep in her stroller beside me.
My father sat across from me, reviewing the documents Emily had collected.
Daniel had agreed to meet at eight.
He'd insisted that I come alone.
My father had refused that condition.
"We're not allowing him to isolate you," he'd said.
I hadn't argued.
I was finished protecting Daniel from the consequences of his own decisions.
At exactly 8:03 p.m., the door opened.
Daniel walked inside.
He looked almost exactly as I remembered him.
Dark hair. Expensive watch. A familiar smile that used to make me forget every argument we'd ever had.
But tonight, I noticed different things.
The expensive watch.
The tailored jacket.
The nervous way he glanced at my father before looking at me.
"Danielle.""
I didn't stand.
"Daniel.""
He looked toward Grace.
"She's gotten big.""
I stared at him.
"She's six weeks old.""
He nodded awkwardly.
"Right.""
My father gestured toward the chair.
"Sit down.""
Daniel hesitated.
"I thought this was a private conversation.""
"It is. We're the people involved.""
Daniel sat.
He placed a folder on the table.
"I can explain the documents.""
"Then explain them," I said.
He rubbed his hands together.
"Victoria approached me several months ago. She said there was a disagreement involving the Brooks family property trust.""
"And?""
"She explained that Gregory wanted to acquire the downtown development site. Apparently, your grandfather's estate had complicated the process.""
I leaned forward.
"Why were you involved?""
"Because I was married to you.""
"You're not married to me anymore.""
"I know.""
"Then why did you sign a document giving Gregory authority over my property?""
Daniel looked down.
"I was told you had already agreed.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Who told you?""
"Victoria.""
My father spoke calmly.
"Did you personally witness Danielle signing the document?""
Daniel hesitated.
"No.""
"Did you meet with a notary?""
"No.""
"Then why did you sign the witness declaration?""
Daniel looked toward me.
"She said it was just administrative paperwork.""
I couldn't believe him.
"You signed a legal document without seeing me sign it?""
He spread his hands.
"I didn't think it would become a problem.""
My father leaned back.
"That's a remarkably convenient explanation.""
Daniel's face reddened.
"I made a mistake.""
I looked at him.
"Why?""
He didn't answer.
"Daniel, why did you do it?""
He stared at the table.
Finally, he said, "They offered me money.""
The room became silent.
I felt something inside me break.
"How much?""
"Fifty thousand dollars.""
I stared at him.
"Fifty thousand dollars?""
He nodded.
"They said it was a consulting fee.""
I almost laughed.
"You sold your signature for fifty thousand dollars?""
"I didn't know they'd forge yours.""
"But you knew you were helping them obtain something that belonged to me.""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"I was in debt.""
I looked at him.
"So you decided my inheritance was your solution?""
He looked up.
"Danielle, I wasn't trying to hurt you.""
"You left me when I was pregnant.""
He flinched.
"You didn't come to the hospital when Grace was born.""
"I know.""
"You didn't ask whether she was healthy.""
"I'm sorry.""
"And now you're sitting here telling me you helped strangers take her future because you needed money?""
Daniel's voice rose.
"You're making me sound like a monster!""
My father interrupted.
"Nobody needs to make you sound like anything. We're discussing what you did.""
Daniel turned toward him.
"With all due respect, Richard, this is between me and Danielle.""
My father remained calm.
"Then answer her questions.""
Daniel looked at me again.
"Victoria said the property was worth millions. She promised me another payment once the transfer went through.""
I felt cold.
"How much?""
"Two hundred thousand.""
My father slowly closed his folder.
"So you were being paid to facilitate a fraudulent transfer.""
Daniel shook his head.
"I didn't know it was fraudulent.""
"Then why did you ask Danielle to meet you alone tonight?"" Emily asked from the far end of the table.
Daniel looked startled.
"Who are you?""
"Emily Carter, general counsel for Brooks Hospitality.""
He glanced at my father.
"Why is legal involved?""
"Because you signed a document containing false statements about a property transaction.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Look, I can help you. I have emails. I have messages from Victoria. I can show you what she said.""
Emily opened her laptop.
"Then provide them.""
Daniel hesitated.
My father looked at him.
"You're here because you wanted to explain yourself. This is your opportunity.""
Daniel opened his folder and removed several printed emails.
Emily examined them.
The first was from Victoria.
It instructed Daniel to obtain my signature through a supposed family authorization process.
The second contained a payment confirmation.
The third was more disturbing.
It was a message from Gregory.
Danielle doesn't need to understand the details. Once the paperwork is processed, Richard will have no choice but to negotiate.
My father stared at the page.
"They intended to use my daughter's signature to pressure me.""
Daniel nodded.
"That's what I think.""
I looked at him.
"Did you know Victoria had a photograph of me?""
Daniel's expression changed.
"Yes.""
My heart sank.
"How long?""
"Since October.""
"Why?""
He looked uncomfortable.
"She wanted to know when you'd be likely to visit the hotel.""
I felt my hands tighten.
"Why?""
Daniel glanced at my father.
Then he said something that made the room go completely silent.
"Because she believed you would eventually come looking for your grandfather's original trust documents.""
I frowned.
"What original documents?""
My father looked toward Emily.
She slowly opened a separate file.
"Danielle, there's a provision in your grandfather's trust that hasn't been discussed.""
I turned toward her.
"What provision?""
Emily explained.
"The downtown property was not simply left to you as a future beneficiary. Your grandfather also established a charitable foundation connected to the land.""
I remembered my grandfather taking me to that old building.
He'd always said he wanted to create something that would help families who had nowhere else to turn.
Emily continued.
"The property was intended to become a residential support center for mothers and children escaping domestic violence.""
My throat tightened.
My grandfather had talked about that dream for years.
I hadn't known he'd put it into legal documents.
My father nodded.
"He wanted you to help oversee the foundation when you were older.""
I looked down at Grace.
A place where mothers and babies could be safe.
A place where women wouldn't have to choose between staying in danger and having nowhere to go.
That was what my grandfather had wanted.
And Gregory Hale had been trying to turn it into a commercial development.
I looked at Daniel.
"Did Victoria know about the foundation?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
"Then why did she want the property?""
Daniel swallowed.
"Because Gregory had already made an agreement with another developer. They planned to demolish the building and construct luxury apartments.""
My father stood abruptly.
"They had no authority to do that.""
Daniel reached into his folder again.
"There's something else.""
He removed a small USB drive.
"Victoria gave me this. She said it contained the final transfer documents.""
Emily took it carefully.
"What's on it?""
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know. But I think it proves they knew the signature was forged.""
Emily connected the drive to a secure laptop.
Several files appeared.
One was a scanned property agreement.
Another was a spreadsheet showing payments.
Then she opened a recorded audio file.
A woman's voice filled the room.
Victoria's voice.
"If Danielle shows up, make sure Marcus handles her. I don't want her asking questions about the property.""
A man's voice answered.
Gregory.
"And if she refuses to sign?""
Victoria laughed.
"Then make her father deal with the embarrassment. People like her always back down when they realize how much money they're up against.""
My father slowly looked at me.
Then the recording continued.
Gregory asked, "And what about the original foundation documents?""
Victoria answered:
"They're still in the hotel. Richard has no idea I know where they are.""
My father froze.
Emily stopped the recording.
"Which hotel?"" she whispered.
Daniel looked at us.
"The Grand Sterling.""
My father turned toward James, who had just entered the room.
"Lock down the hotel archive.""
James nodded.
"Immediately.""
Then Daniel spoke again.
"There's one more thing you need to know.""
My father looked at him.
"What?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Victoria didn't just have access to the property paperwork.""
May you like
He glanced at me.
"She had access to your grandfather's private room before he died.""
