Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Threats
My father read the email twice.
Then he placed the phone on the desk.
"Who is her husband?""
Emily answered immediately.
"Gregory Hale. CEO of Hale Development Group.""
I recognized the name.
Hale Development was a major construction company. Their buildings appeared in business magazines, and their advertisements were everywhere in the city.
My father nodded.
"They're currently working on our downtown property.""
Emily opened another document.
"More than that. They're the lead contractors for the Grand Sterling's upcoming renovation.""
I looked between them.
"So Victoria's husband does business with the hotel?""
"Yes," Emily replied.
"A substantial amount.""
Sarah looked terrified.
"That's why nobody wanted to challenge her.""
My father turned toward her.
"Did Victoria ever mention her husband's contracts when you complained?""
Sarah nodded.
"She once told Marcus that her husband could make sure the hotel never had to employ people who didn't know their place.""
I felt a chill.
My father looked at Emily.
"How much of our business is tied to Hale Development?""
"Approximately forty-eight million dollars across three active projects.""
My father leaned back.
"Interesting.""
I knew that expression.
It was the same one he'd worn when a business partner had once tried to manipulate him into signing an unfair agreement.
He wasn't frightened.
He was calculating.
"Get me the renovation contract," he said.
Emily nodded.
"Already requested.""
A few minutes later, she returned with a thick digital file.
My father read through the first pages while I sat near the window with Grace.
The office was finally quiet.
I watched the sunlight fall across the marble floor outside.
Everything had changed so quickly.
An hour earlier, I had been a tired young mother trying to find a chair.
Now I was listening to conversations about corporate contracts, employee retaliation, and forty-eight million dollars.
My father noticed me staring.
"Are you all right?""
I nodded.
"I'm just trying to understand how this became so big.""
He closed the file.
"Because people with power sometimes believe they can use it without consequences.""
I looked toward Sarah.
"Does Victoria know about the complaints?""
Sarah nodded.
"She knows everything. She once told me that nobody would believe hotel employees over someone like her.""
My father looked troubled.
"Then we have more work to do.""
Emily's phone rang.
She answered.
"Emily Carter.""
A man's voice came through loudly enough that I could hear parts of it.
Emily's expression remained professional.
"Yes, I understand you're requesting an immediate meeting.""
She paused.
"No, Mr. Hale. The investigation will not be stopped.""
Another pause.
"Because we have video evidence and witness statements.""
She ended the call.
My father raised an eyebrow.
"Gregory?""
"Yes.""
"What did he want?""
"He wants to discuss the suspension of his wife's hotel privileges. He also suggested that our renovation agreement should be reconsidered.""
My father laughed once.
"How predictable.""
He stood and walked toward the window.
"Tell him I'll meet him.""
Emily frowned.
"Are you sure?""
"Absolutely.""
I looked up.
"Dad, do you think he'll come here?""
"Probably.""
He glanced at me.
"And I don't want you worrying about him.""
I lowered my voice.
"I don't want you risking your business because of me.""
My father came over and crouched beside my chair.
"Danielle, listen to me. This isn't happening because you're my daughter. It's happening because someone assaulted a woman holding a baby and then tried to have the victim removed.""
He brushed Grace's blanket away from her tiny face.
"If we let that go because the person responsible has a wealthy husband, what kind of company are we running?""
I didn't answer.
He kissed my forehead.
"Besides, the company existed long before Gregory Hale signed his first contract. It will survive without him.""
A knock interrupted us.
A security officer entered.
"Mr. Brooks, Mr. Gregory Hale is downstairs.""
Emily exchanged a glance with my father.
"He's early.""
"Send him up.""
A few minutes later, the elevator doors opened.
Gregory Hale stepped into the administrative corridor.
He was in his late fifties, with neatly combed gray hair and a navy suit. He carried a leather briefcase and wore the confident expression of someone accustomed to getting immediate attention.
Victoria walked beside him.
Her fuchsia dress had been replaced by a cream-colored jacket, but the diamonds were still there.
She looked directly at me.
"Well, this is becoming a family reunion.""
Gregory glanced at his wife.
"Victoria, please.""
He approached my father and extended his hand.
"Richard. I wish we were meeting under better circumstances.""
My father shook his hand briefly.
"That makes two of us.""
Gregory glanced at me.
"Your daughter, I presume?""
"Danielle.""
"Pleasure.""
I didn't respond.
Gregory opened his briefcase and removed a document.
"I think there's been an unfortunate misunderstanding. Victoria tells me she and Danielle had a disagreement.""
I looked at him.
"A disagreement?""
He smiled politely.
"Yes. Tempers got heated.""
"Your wife slapped me.""
His smile faded slightly.
"That's a serious allegation.""
"There is video.""
He glanced at my father.
"Richard, I understand you're upset. But these things happen. People have bad days.""
My father remained expressionless.
"Do they?""
Gregory nodded.
"Victoria has been under considerable pressure lately. She's been managing several charitable events, and sometimes people misunderstand her intentions.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"She called me someone who didn't belong here.""
Gregory waved his hand.
"I'm sure she didn't mean it personally.""
"She pushed my diaper bag and hit me.""
He looked uncomfortable.
"Well, if that happened, I'm certain she regrets it.""
I turned toward Victoria.
"Do you?""
She looked away.
Gregory quickly stepped in.
"Richard, perhaps we can resolve this privately. My wife can offer an apology, and we can all move forward.""
My father asked, "What about Sarah Mitchell?""
Gregory frowned.
"Who?""
"The employee who witnessed the incident and described two previous complaints involving your wife.""
Victoria's face hardened.
"Those are lies.""
Sarah, who had been standing near the doorway, took a step backward.
Gregory noticed her.
"You're the employee?""
Sarah nodded.
He gave her a polite smile.
"Perhaps you should be careful about making statements you can't substantiate.""
My father immediately stepped between them.
"Are you threatening my employee?""
Gregory raised both hands.
"Not at all. I'm simply advising her.""
Emily opened her folder.
"Mr. Hale, we've reviewed the previous complaints. Both were documented. Neither received the required investigation.""
Gregory looked at the paperwork.
"Those matters are internal hotel issues.""
"They are," my father said.
"And we're addressing them.""
Gregory sighed.
"Richard, we have forty-eight million dollars in active contracts. Surely you don't want to jeopardize a valuable business relationship over an argument in a hotel lobby.""
My father stared at him.
"Your wife struck my daughter.""
"She lost her temper.""
"Your wife intimidated employees.""
"That's exaggerated.""
"And now you're threatening our renovation contracts because we won't ignore what happened.""
Gregory's expression hardened.
"I'm reminding you that business decisions have consequences.""
My father smiled faintly.
"You're absolutely right.""
He turned toward Emily.
"Please prepare a notice suspending all new work orders under the Hale Development agreement, pending a review of the contractual obligations.""
Gregory's smile disappeared.
"You're making a mistake.""
"No. I'm making a decision.""
Gregory leaned forward.
"Think carefully, Richard. You don't want to start a fight you can't finish.""
My father didn't move.
"Then I suppose we'll find out.""
Gregory closed his briefcase.
"Victoria, we're leaving.""
Victoria looked at me.
"This isn't over.""
My father answered before I could.
"You're right. It isn't.""
They walked toward the elevator.
Just before the doors closed, Gregory turned around.
"One more thing, Richard. You should ask your daughter why she didn't tell you about her previous visit to this hotel.""
I frowned.
"What previous visit?""
The elevator doors shut.
I turned toward my father.
"Dad, what was he talking about?""
My father looked genuinely confused.
"I don't know.""
Emily returned to her laptop.
But Sarah suddenly made a strange sound.
A small gasp.
I looked at her.
"Sarah?""
She was staring at the closed elevator doors.
Then she turned toward us.
"Danielle, did you say you've never had a problem with Mrs. Hale before today?""
I nodded.
"Yes. I've never met her.""
Sarah swallowed.
"Then why did she recognize you?""
The question made my stomach drop.
Because Victoria hadn't looked at me like a stranger.
She had looked at me like someone she had been waiting to confront.
And Sarah had just remembered something.
"About six months ago," she whispered, "Mrs. Hale came to the front desk carrying a photograph.""
My father stepped closer.
"What photograph?""
May you like
Sarah looked directly at me.
"It was a picture of you.""
