Chapter 4: The Witness Nobody Protected

Sarah Mitchell stood in the doorway, twisting the edge of her navy uniform between trembling fingers.

She looked to be in her early thirties. Her dark hair was pulled into a tight bun, and a small name badge was pinned crookedly above her breast pocket.

She wouldn't look at Victoria.

She wouldn't look at Marcus either.

Instead, she stared at the carpet.

My father pulled out a chair.

"Sarah, please sit down.""

She shook her head.

"I'd rather stand, sir.""

"All right. But nobody is going to punish you for telling the truth.""

Sarah gave a nervous laugh.

"That's what they said last time.""

The room became silent.

Emily Carter closed the folder.

"Sarah, you're not required to make a statement without representation. We can arrange for an independent employment representative.""

Sarah swallowed.

"I've already lost one job because of this.""

My father leaned forward.

"What happened?""

Sarah glanced at Marcus.

He immediately interrupted.

"Mr. Brooks, I don't think we should turn this into a discussion about unrelated personnel matters.""

My father didn't even turn toward him.

"I'll decide what's relevant.""

Sarah took a shaky breath.

"About three months ago, Mrs. Hale came into the restaurant with two friends. She demanded a particular table, even though it was reserved for another family.""

Victoria rolled her eyes.

"This is ridiculous.""

Sarah continued.

"The restaurant was full. I explained that we couldn't move the other guests without asking them first. Mrs. Hale told me she wasn't accustomed to being told no.""

My father listened carefully.

"What happened next?""

"She complained to the restaurant supervisor. Later that evening, Marcus called me into his office.""

I looked at Marcus.

He had gone completely still.

Sarah continued.

"He told me I needed to understand that Mrs. Hale was important to the hotel. He said I had embarrassed management.""

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"Sarah, that's not an accurate description.""

She finally looked at him.

"You told me that if I couldn't make important guests happy, I could find somewhere else to work.""

"I was addressing a customer service issue.""

"You also removed me from my regular shifts for two weeks.""

Marcus said nothing.

Sarah's voice began to crack.

"I have a little boy. I'm raising him alone. Those two weeks meant I couldn't pay my electricity bill.""

I felt Grace move against my chest.

I looked at Sarah and understood why she'd been afraid.

Sometimes people stayed silent not because they lacked courage, but because the consequences of speaking were too expensive.

My father asked gently, "And the second incident?""

Sarah wiped her eyes.

"Mrs. Hale complained about a housekeeper named Elena. She said Elena had touched her designer handbag while cleaning the suite.""

Victoria immediately interrupted.

"She had.""

Sarah shook her head.

"Elena was replacing towels. The bag was on the floor, and she moved it onto the chair so she could clean.""

"She should have known better," Victoria snapped.

Sarah flinched.

My father raised one hand.

"Let Sarah finish.""

Sarah continued.

"Mrs. Hale demanded that Elena be fired. Marcus called her into his office. Elena apologized, even though she hadn't done anything wrong.""

"That's not true," Marcus said.

Sarah looked directly at him.

"You told her that her employment depended on Mrs. Hale being satisfied.""

Marcus's face reddened.

"I followed the hotel's guest relations policy.""

Emily immediately opened her folder.

"There's no policy authorizing disciplinary action based solely on an unverified guest accusation.""

Marcus turned toward her.

"Emily, you weren't involved in daily operations.""

"Which is why we're reviewing the records.""

My father stood.

"Where is Elena now?""

Sarah hesitated.

"She still works here. But she's been transferred to night shifts.""

"Did she request that?""

"No.""

My father nodded slowly.

"Thank you, Sarah.""

She looked surprised.

"That's it?""

"For now. You don't have to prove your worth to anyone in this room.""

He turned toward Emily.

"Arrange an independent review of both complaints. Make sure Sarah and Elena are protected from retaliation. No reduction in hours, no disciplinary action, and no pressure to withdraw their statements.""

Emily wrote everything down.

"Understood.""

Victoria let out an impatient breath.

"Are we finished with this little performance?""

My father turned toward her.

"No.""

Her face tightened.

"I have somewhere to be.""

"Then you may leave. But your hotel privileges are suspended pending the investigation.""

Victoria stared at him.

"You cannot be serious.""

"I am.""

"You can't treat a guest this way!""

My father looked at the folder.

"Actually, I can refuse service when there is a legitimate reason to investigate conduct that threatens the safety and dignity of others.""

Victoria stepped closer.

"You'll regret this. My husband knows people in this city. He has connections with half the board.""

My father calmly adjusted his cuff.

"Then your husband is welcome to speak with our legal department.""

Victoria grabbed her handbag.

"Marcus, say something!""

Marcus looked at the floor.

For the first time that afternoon, he wasn't rushing to defend her.

Victoria stormed out.

The office door slammed behind her.

Sarah exhaled as if she'd been holding her breath for months.

My father looked at her.

"Sarah, one more question. Did you witness what happened to Danielle today?""

Sarah nodded.

"Yes, sir.""

"Why didn't you come forward earlier?""

Her eyes filled again.

"Because Mrs. Hale threatened to have me fired. And because Marcus was standing beside her.""

Marcus looked up.

"That's an unfair accusation.""

Sarah turned toward him.

"Then why did you tell me to stay out of it when I said I saw her hit Danielle?""

I felt my stomach tighten.

I hadn't known that.

Sarah continued.

"You came to the lobby after Mrs. Hale called you. I told you what I saw. You said you didn't need another employee creating problems.""

My father slowly turned toward Marcus.

"Did you say that?""

Marcus didn't respond.

Emily closed her folder.

"Mr. Reed, I think it's best that you leave your office access card with security while the review proceeds.""

Marcus looked devastated.

"After nine years?""

My father answered quietly.

"Nine years should have taught you better.""

Marcus removed the card from his jacket pocket and placed it on the desk.

He walked out without another word.

I looked at Sarah.

"Thank you for speaking up.""

She shook her head.

"I'm sorry I didn't do it sooner.""

"You were afraid. I understand.""

Sarah glanced at Grace.

"She's beautiful.""

I smiled faintly.

"Thank you.""

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded photograph.

It showed a little boy with bright eyes and a missing front tooth.

"My son, Noah.""

I looked at the picture.

"How old is he?""

"Seven.""

My father smiled.

"He's lucky to have you.""

Sarah looked down.

"I hope so.""

Then Emily's phone vibrated.

She read the message, and her expression changed.

"What is it?"" my father asked.

Emily turned the screen toward him.

It was an email from the company's regional operations director.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: BOARD MEMBER REQUESTING IMMEDIATE HALT TO INVESTIGATION.*

My father frowned.

"Who sent this?""

Emily looked at the sender's name.

"Victoria Hale.""

Sarah's face drained of color.

May you like

And then she whispered something that made the room go cold.

"She's married to the man who controls the hotel renovation contracts.""
