Chapter 2: The Name on the Building
The black SUV stopped directly outside the hotel's entrance.
A uniformed doorman hurried forward.
Two men in dark suits stepped out first. One opened the rear passenger door while the other scanned the entrance.
Then my father emerged.
Richard Brooks.
He was sixty-one, tall, silver-haired, and always impeccably dressed. That afternoon, he wore a charcoal suit with a white shirt and no tie.
He didn't look angry at first.
He looked concerned.
His eyes found me through the glass doors.
Then he saw my cheek.
His expression changed.
"Danny.""
I stood up carefully, holding Grace.
He crossed the lobby in seconds.
"What happened?""
I tried to smile.
"Nothing happened to Grace. She's okay.""
He gently touched the uninjured side of my face.
"That's not what I asked.""
"She slapped me.""
His jaw tightened.
"Who?""
I pointed toward Victoria.
The woman had suddenly stopped smiling.
My father turned.
Victoria examined him from head to toe.
"Are you Danielle's father?""
"I am.""
"Well, I'm glad you're here. Perhaps you can explain to your daughter that this is a luxury establishment, not a place to sit around with children.""
My father didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Marcus.
"You're the manager?""
Marcus straightened.
"Marcus Reed, sir. Hotel manager.""
"Richard Brooks.""
Marcus extended his hand.
My father didn't take it.
"I'm here because my daughter tells me a woman struck her while she was holding a newborn child. Then you attempted to remove her instead of investigating.""
Marcus glanced at Victoria.
"Sir, there seems to have been a misunderstanding.""
"A misunderstanding?""
"Mrs. Hale is one of our preferred guests. She reported that your daughter was behaving aggressively.""
My father looked at me.
"Did you strike her?""
"No.""
"Did you threaten her?""
"No.""
"Did you touch her belongings?""
"She pushed my diaper bag.""
He nodded.
Then he turned back to Marcus.
"Where is your security footage?""
Marcus hesitated.
"Our security office handles those requests.""
"Then take me there.""
Victoria stepped forward.
"This is ridiculous. Richard, is it? I don't know what your daughter told you, but she was being extremely disrespectful.""
My father finally looked at her.
"Did you slap her?""
Victoria lifted her chin.
"I merely defended myself.""
"From a woman holding a baby?""
"She was being confrontational.""
My father's voice became quieter.
"That wasn't my question.""
Victoria glanced toward Marcus.
"Marcus, are you going to allow this?""
Marcus looked increasingly uncomfortable.
"Mr. Brooks, perhaps we should discuss this privately.""
My father nodded once.
"Excellent idea. Bring the security footage, the incident report, and the guest records.""
Marcus frowned.
"Guest records?""
"Yes.""
Victoria let out a sharp laugh.
"Why would you need guest records?""
My father didn't answer her.
He turned toward one of the men accompanying him.
"James, call legal. Tell them we have a potential assault incident involving a minor's mother and a serious failure in management procedure.""
"Yes, sir.""
Marcus's face changed.
"Sir, there's no need to involve legal counsel.""
My father looked at him.
"That decision isn't yours.""
I stood quietly beside them, trying to understand why everyone seemed to know something I didn't.
My father turned toward me.
"Danielle, are you comfortable staying here?""
I nodded.
"Yes. I just want someone to look at the cameras.""
"Then that's what we're going to do.""
Victoria rolled her eyes.
"Unbelievable. You'd think you owned the place.""
My father glanced at her.
For the first time, I noticed the faintest trace of a smile.
"Something like that.""
Marcus looked at him sharply.
Victoria didn't seem to understand.
"Well, money doesn't give you the right to intimidate people.""
My father ignored her and asked James to bring a chair for me.
Then he crouched beside Grace.
"Hello, little princess.""
Grace had stopped crying, although she still made tiny hiccuping sounds.
My father brushed one finger against her blanket.
"Grandpa's here.""
I felt tears gathering in my eyes.
For weeks, I'd been trying to prove I could manage motherhood without constantly asking for help. My marriage had ended before Grace was born, and I'd moved into a modest apartment near the pediatric clinic.
My father had offered me a place in his home.
I'd refused.
Not because I didn't love him.
Because I wanted my daughter to grow up knowing she could stand on her own feet.
But standing there, with my cheek swollen and my baby trembling against me, I was grateful he hadn't asked me to explain myself twice.
A few minutes later, Marcus returned with a tablet.
"Mr. Brooks, I've requested the footage.""
"Good. Let's watch it.""
He led us toward a small administrative office behind the reception desk.
Victoria followed.
"I don't see why I need to participate in this.""
My father stopped.
"Then you're welcome to leave.""
She stared at him.
Marcus cleared his throat.
"Mrs. Hale, it may be better if we establish what happened.""
She reluctantly entered.
The office was small, with two monitors, a desk, and a row of filing cabinets.
Marcus opened the hotel's camera system.
"Which time?""
I checked my phone.
"2:17 p.m.""
He entered the timestamp.
The footage appeared.
There I was, walking into the lobby with Grace.
I watched myself pause beside the window, adjust the blanket, and sit down.
Victoria appeared several minutes later.
The footage had no sound, but the movements were unmistakable.
She pointed at me.
I answered.
She stepped closer.
Then she slapped me.
Even without sound, watching it again made my stomach turn.
My father gripped the back of the chair.
"Stop.""
Marcus paused the video.
"That's not the entire interaction," he said quickly.
"There may be additional context.""
My father turned.
"What additional context makes striking a mother holding a newborn acceptable?""
Marcus said nothing.
Victoria crossed her arms.
"The camera doesn't show what she said to me.""
My father looked back at the screen.
"It shows your hand hitting my daughter.""
"She provoked me.""
"By sitting in a chair?""
Victoria's cheeks flushed.
"She was disrespectful!""
My father nodded slowly.
"Thank you.""
Victoria frowned.
"For what?""
"For confirming that you struck her.""
Marcus quickly stepped between them.
"Mr. Brooks, perhaps we can resolve this without making a formal complaint.""
My father looked at him.
"You're worried about a complaint?""
"I'm concerned about the hotel's reputation.""
"Then you should have thought about that before defending the person who assaulted my daughter.""
James, the suited man, approached the desk.
"Sir, legal is on the line.""
My father accepted the phone.
"Put them through.""
While he spoke, Marcus pulled me aside.
"Ms. Brooks, I think we should discuss this reasonably.""
I looked at him.
"You didn't believe me when I told you what happened.""
"I'm simply trying to manage the situation.""
"You called me trouble.""
He rubbed his forehead.
"I was trying to prevent a disturbance.""
I glanced toward Victoria.
"She created the disturbance.""
He lowered his voice.
"Mrs. Hale has spent considerable money here. These situations are complicated.""
I stared at him.
"So my daughter and I matter less because we aren't wearing diamonds?""
Marcus didn't answer.
Across the room, my father ended his call.
"James, arrange a meeting with the ownership office.""
Marcus looked up.
"Ownership?""
My father slipped the phone into his pocket.
"Yes.""
Then his phone rang again.
He glanced at the screen and answered.
"Hello, David.""
He listened for several seconds.
Then he said something that made Marcus go completely still.
"Yes. I'm at the Grand Sterling. There has been an incident involving my daughter.""
He paused.
"Tell the board I'll be upstairs shortly.""
Marcus's face had lost its color.
Victoria looked between them.
"What board?""
My father ended the call.
Then he turned toward Marcus.
"Before we continue, I'd like you to explain something.""
Marcus swallowed.
"Of course, sir.""
"Why did you tell my daughter to leave a hotel she had every right to enter?""
Marcus opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
My father placed one hand on the desk.
"Because, Mr. Reed, I believe you've forgotten who signs your employment contract.""
The room fell silent.
And then my father's phone rang again.
This time, he put it on speaker.
A familiar voice filled the office.
"Mr. Brooks, the chairman is asking whether you want the emergency ownership meeting held now.""
Marcus slowly sank into the nearest chair.
Victoria's lips parted.
May you like
My father looked directly at me.
"Danielle, sweetheart, there's something I should have told you a long time ago.""
