Chapter 6: The Truth About Lily

I read the words again.

And again.

My brain refused to accept them.

Not Charles’ daughter.

The photograph slipped slightly in my hand.

Victoria saw my face.

“What is it?””

I couldn’t speak.

I handed her the picture.

The second she read the back, all the color disappeared from her face.

Eleanor looked over.

“What did he show you?””

Nobody answered.

She walked closer.

Then she saw the writing.

Her expression changed completely.

“No.””

A single word.

But it carried years of fear.

I looked at her.

“Eleanor.””

She didn’t respond.

“Who is the baby?””

Her eyes moved toward Lily.

And that was when my entire world shifted.

Because Eleanor looked at my daughter like she had known her forever.

Not like a stranger.

Like family.

Lily stepped forward.

“Do you know me?””

Eleanor dropped to her knees.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.””

The room became silent.

I felt my chest tighten.

“How?””

Eleanor looked at me.

“I was there when she was born.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Victoria looked between us.

“She’s your sister’s daughter?””

Eleanor nodded slowly.

“But Charles told everyone the baby died.””

I stared at Lily.

My little girl.

The child who had changed my entire life.

The child who had found a hidden room no adult noticed.

“What are you saying?””

Eleanor stood.

“I’m saying Charles lied about more than one disappearance.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

Because accepting it meant questioning everything.

Everything about Lily.

Everything about her past.

Eleanor walked closer.

“Three years ago, I discovered Charles was planning to use my sister’s foundation to cover his crimes.””

Victoria looked down.

“I remember.””

“I also discovered something else.””

Eleanor looked at Lily.

“My sister was pregnant.””

I swallowed.

“With who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Eleanor looked at me.

And I knew before she spoke.

“Your daughter’s biological father.””

The room went completely still.

I felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me.

“That’s impossible.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“No. What’s impossible is the story Charles created.””

My voice became quieter.

“Why didn’t I know?””

She looked heartbroken.

“Because you were supposed to forget.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

Eleanor looked at Victoria.

“She needs to know everything.””

Victoria nodded slowly.

Then she said:

“Three years ago, you weren’t a stranger to our family.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Victoria looked ashamed.

“You worked with Charles.””

I shook my head.

“No, I didn’t.””

“You did.””

She walked to the desk and opened a drawer.

Inside was another folder.

My name was written on it.

I couldn’t breathe.

“How did you get that?””

Victoria looked at me sadly.

“Because Charles kept records of everyone he controlled.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Old photographs.

Emails.

And one picture that made my hands go numb.

It showed me.

Three years younger.

Standing beside Eleanor.

Holding a newborn baby.

Holding Lily.

But I had no memory of that day.

None.

I looked at my daughter.

She was staring at me quietly.

“Daddy?””

I dropped the photograph.

“I don’t understand.””

Eleanor reached for my hand.

“Charles made sure you wouldn’t.””

My throat tightened.

“What did he do to me?””

Before Eleanor could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The room fell into darkness.

Someone screamed from downstairs.

Then came the sound of glass breaking.

Victoria grabbed Lily.

Eleanor moved toward the door.

And from the hallway came a voice.

Charles.

But he wasn’t alone.

“You should have stayed hidden.””

A second voice answered.

A woman’s voice.

One I didn’t recognize.

Then Charles said:

“Bring me the girl.””

I felt Lily’s fingers wrap around mine.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

my daughter was afraid.
