Chapter 4: The Secret Charles Buried
I wanted answers.
I wanted them immediately.
But Charles Vale was the kind of man who had spent decades making sure nobody questioned him.
He stepped toward me calmly.
“Take your daughter and leave.””
I didn’t move.
“You know who her mother is.””
His eyes narrowed.
“That is not your concern.””
“It became my concern when my daughter found evidence you tried to hide.””
For the first time, anger flashed across his face.
Not rage.
Control slipping.
Victoria noticed it too.
“Tell him,” she said.
Charles looked at her.
“Careful.””
She shook her head.
“I’m done being afraid of you.””
Lily stood beside me, holding my jacket.
“Daddy,” she whispered, “why is everyone scared?””
I looked down at her.
I didn’t have an answer.
Because I was starting to understand something.
Adults didn’t hide things because they were harmless.
They hid things because they were dangerous.
Victoria walked to the desk near the window.
She opened a drawer.
Inside were photographs.
Dozens of them.
She picked one up and handed it to me.
My hands went cold.
The picture showed a young woman standing beside Victoria.
Same smile.
Same eyes.
Same face shape.
She looked familiar.
Too familiar.
“Who is she?”” I asked.
Victoria’s voice cracked.
“My sister.””
I looked at Charles.
“And?””
Victoria looked down.
“Her name was Eleanor.””
“Was?””
She nodded.
“Everyone thinks she died three years ago.””
The same age as Lily.
My stomach tightened.
“What does that have to do with my daughter?””
Victoria looked at Lily.
“Everything.””
Before I could ask another question, Charles grabbed the photograph from my hand.
“That’s enough.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“No.””
He looked at her.
“You really want to do this?””
“Yes.””
Charles laughed quietly.
“You think telling him the truth will save you?””
“No.””
She looked at Lily.
“I think she deserves the truth.””
The room felt smaller.
I looked between them.
“Someone explain.””
Victoria took a deep breath.
“Three years ago, my sister discovered Charles was involved in illegal activities.””
Charles immediately interrupted.
“Watch your words.””
“She found financial records. Names. Payments.””
Victoria continued.
“She was going to expose him.””
“And?””
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“She disappeared.””
Nobody spoke.
The silence felt heavy.
Then Lily quietly said:
“She didn’t disappear.””
Everyone turned toward her.
I knelt down.
“Lily, what do you mean?””
She pointed at the photograph.
“I saw her.””
My heart stopped.
Victoria looked confused.
“When?””
Lily touched the picture.
“Upstairs.””
Charles’ face changed.
“Impossible.””
Lily shook her head.
“No. She was crying.””
I felt every hair on my arms rise.
“What did she say?””
Lily looked at me.
“She said she was waiting for someone to find her.””
Victoria covered her mouth.
“No…”
Charles stepped backward.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Because now I knew.
He wasn’t surprised by Lily’s words.
He was terrified.
“Where did you see her?”” I asked.
Lily pointed toward the closet.
“No.””
She pointed behind the mirror.
“Behind there.””
Everyone went silent.
I looked at the giant mirror covering the wall.
A luxury decoration.
A normal mirror.
Except Lily walked toward it confidently.
She pressed her tiny hand against the frame.
“There’s a door.””
Charles moved instantly.
“Stop!””
His voice exploded through the room.
And that was the moment I knew.
The child who had walked into this gala looking for a bathroom had just uncovered something a billionaire had spent three years hiding.
I grabbed the edge of the mirror.
Behind it, something clicked.
A hidden lock released.
The wall began to move.
May you like
And from the darkness behind it…
a woman’s voice whispered my daughter’s name.
