Chapter 3: The Woman Behind The Mask
The sound of Charles Vale’s footsteps grew louder.
One step.
Then another.
Victoria looked toward the hallway like someone waiting for a storm to break through the door.
“Please,” she whispered.
“You need to hide.””
I stared at her.
Five minutes earlier, I thought my daughter had made an innocent mistake.
Now I was standing in a private hallway of one of the richest families in the country, holding a strange piece of material that had apparently terrified a billionaire’s wife.
“What exactly is happening?”” I asked.
Victoria looked at Lily.
Then at me.
“My husband built an empire on one lie.””
The footsteps stopped.
She quickly opened the door behind her.
“Inside. Now.””
I hesitated.
I didn’t trust her.
But I trusted the fear in her eyes.
I pulled Lily into the room.
It was a private suite, decorated like a luxury apartment. A huge mirror covered one wall. Expensive paintings hung everywhere. A closet bigger than my bedroom stood open near the corner.
Victoria closed the door slowly.
“Don’t make a sound.””
Lily looked up at her.
“Are you hiding from him?””
Victoria froze.
Children have a way of asking the questions adults spend years avoiding.
“Yes,” she whispered.
A knock came from outside.
“Victoria?””
Charles.
His voice was calm.
Almost gentle.
That made it worse.
Victoria didn’t answer.
The door handle moved.
Locked.
“Open the door.””
She walked toward it, but I grabbed her arm.
“What is he going to do?””
Her eyes met mine.
“You have no idea who you brought upstairs.””
The door shook slightly.
“Victoria.””
Charles’ voice became colder.
“You know I don’t like secrets.””
She swallowed.
Then she turned to me.
“Hide in the closet.””
I almost laughed.
A grown man.
A billionaire.
A secret room.
My three-year-old daughter discovering something impossible.
And now I was hiding in a closet?
But then I heard the fear in Lily’s breathing.
So I moved.
The closet doors closed just as the suite door opened.
Through the small gap, I saw Charles enter.
He wasn’t angry.
That was the terrifying part.
He looked perfectly controlled.
“Why did you come upstairs?”” he asked.
Victoria stood near the center of the room.
“I needed air.””
Charles smiled.
“You’ve been needing air a lot lately.””
Silence.
Then he noticed something.
The hallway table.
The missing piece of fabric.
His expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“You found it.””
Victoria didn’t answer.
Charles stepped closer.
“Where is it?””
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
His smile disappeared.
“Victoria.””
The way he said her name made Lily grab my hand.
Charles walked around the room slowly.
“I gave you everything.””
Victoria laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
“You gave me a cage.””
His face hardened.
“You’re being emotional.””
“No. I’m finally being honest.””
I looked at Victoria differently.
This wasn’t a spoiled billionaire’s wife protecting a secret.
This was someone who had been trapped.
Charles stepped closer.
“You know what happens if people find out.””
Victoria stared at him.
“People deserve to know.””
“Do they?””
His voice lowered.
“Do they deserve to know what you did?””
Victoria went completely still.
I felt Lily move beside me.
Then Charles said something that made my blood freeze.
“Because if you tell them about me, I’ll tell them about you.””
The room became silent.
A few seconds passed.
Then Victoria whispered:
“You’re still protecting her.””
Charles smiled.
“Yes.””
My heart started pounding.
Protecting who?
Victoria looked toward the closet.
Not directly at us.
But close enough.
Like she knew we were there.
“She’s alive,” Victoria said.
Charles’ expression changed.
For the first time that night, he looked afraid.
“Don’t.””
“You can’t hide her forever.””
Charles grabbed Victoria’s wrist.
Not hard enough for anyone downstairs to notice.
But hard enough to make her wince.
Lily gasped.
I pulled the closet door open.
“Let go of her.””
Charles turned.
The shock on his face lasted only a moment.
Then he smiled.
A cold, empty smile.
“So.””
His eyes moved to Lily.
“This is the child.””
I stepped in front of my daughter.
“What are you talking about?””
Charles looked at the piece of material in my hand.
Then at Lily.
“She found it, didn’t she?””
Nobody answered.
Charles took a slow breath.
Then he said something I never expected.
“That girl has the same eyes.””
I felt a chill run through me.
“Same eyes as who?””
Charles looked at Victoria.
And Victoria looked like she had just lost the last bit of hope she had.
“Her mother.””
My fingers tightened around Lily’s hand.
Because suddenly, this wasn’t about a hidden object.
It was about a person.
May you like
Someone everyone believed was gone.
And Charles Vale knew exactly who she was.
