Chapter 2: The Room Behind The Door
I should have listened to the warning.
Any reasonable person would have.
But there was something about Lily’s hand in mine that made me keep walking.
She wasn’t scared.
That was what frightened me most.
Children get afraid of monsters under beds and shadows in closets.
They don’t usually expose secrets hidden inside mansions.
The staircase was covered in dark red carpet. The music from the ballroom became quieter with every step until all I could hear was Lily’s small shoes tapping beside me.
“Daddy,” she whispered.
“Yes?””
“Are we going to get in trouble?””
I looked down at her.
“No, sweetheart.””
It was a lie.
I didn’t know if we were going to get in trouble.
I didn’t even know what we were looking for.
But I knew my daughter wasn’t making this up.
At the top of the stairs was a long hallway with closed doors on both sides.
Private suites.
The kind of place guests weren’t supposed to enter.
Lily walked slowly, looking at each door.
Then she stopped.
“That one.””
She pointed.
A gold number plate was attached to the door.
Suite 14.
I reached for the handle.
Locked.
“Maybe we should go back,” I said.
Lily shook her head.
“She put it in there.””
Before I could respond, footsteps echoed behind us.
I turned.
A security guard stood at the end of the hallway.
“Sir,” he said, “these rooms are restricted.””
I forced a smile.
“I’m sorry. My daughter thought she saw something.””
The guard looked at Lily.
Then his expression changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
That bothered me.
“Sir,” I repeated, “is there a problem?””
He hesitated.
Then he said, “You need to return downstairs.””
The way he said it wasn’t a request.
It was an order.
Lily squeezed my fingers.
“Daddy.””
I looked at her.
She was staring past the guard.
At the small table beside the hallway mirror.
On it was a decorative vase.
And behind it was a tiny piece of white fabric.
Lily let go of my hand.
She walked around the guard before I could stop her.
“Lily!””
She reached behind the vase.
And pulled out a small piece of material.
The guard’s face immediately changed.
“Give that to me.””
He moved forward.
I stepped between them.
“No.””
The guard stopped.
For the first time, I saw uncertainty.
Lily held the fabric carefully.
“It’s part of her.””
I looked at what she was holding.
It was soft.
Flesh-colored.
Almost like a piece of skin.
But it couldn’t be.
Could it?
A door behind us suddenly opened.
Victoria Vale stood there.
She was no longer smiling.
Her perfect appearance had cracked.
Her eyes were filled with panic.
“Where did you find that?””
Nobody answered.
Victoria stepped closer.
“Give it back.””
Her voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
I stared at her.
“What is it?””
“It’s nothing.””
“That’s not how people react to nothing.””
Her jaw tightened.
For a moment, the powerful woman from the ballroom disappeared.
She looked like someone trapped.
Then she looked at Lily.
And something strange happened.
Her expression softened.
“Sweetheart,” Victoria said, “did you touch anything else?””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
Victoria closed her eyes briefly.
Almost like she was relieved.
Then she looked at me.
“You need to leave.””
“Why?””
“Because you don’t understand what you found.””
“Then explain it.””
She didn’t answer.
Instead, the security guard’s radio suddenly crackled.
A voice came through.
“Mr. Vale is on his way upstairs.””
Victoria’s face went pale.
Not because Charles was coming.
Because she was afraid of what he would do.
She grabbed my arm.
“Take your daughter and go.””
I pulled away.
“What are you hiding?””
Her lips parted.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“My husband doesn’t know I kept it.””
The hallway went silent.
I stared at her.
“Kept what?””
Victoria looked toward the approaching footsteps.
Then back at Lily.
May you like
And the next words she said changed everything.
“Proof that the woman downstairs isn’t who everyone thinks she is.””
