Chapter 8: The Child Nobody Claimed

Emily woke in the hospital just before dawn.

Daniel was sitting beside her bed, holding her hand beneath the thin white blanket. A heart monitor beeped steadily beside her, and an IV line ran into her arm.

For several minutes, he simply watched her breathe.

He had spent three years mourning a woman who was sitting less than six feet away from him.

He couldn't decide whether he wanted to laugh, cry, or tear the world apart.

Emily's eyelids fluttered.

“Daniel?””

He leaned forward immediately.

“I'm here.””

She tried to sit up, but pain stopped her.

“Where's Mia?””

“Safe. She's in the next room with a nurse.””

Emily closed her eyes in relief.

“Thank God.””

Daniel brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

“The doctors say you're dehydrated and malnourished. They're going to keep you here for observation.””

Emily gave a faint, exhausted smile.

“Three years underground, and the first person to tell me where to sleep is a hospital nurse.””

Daniel's smile disappeared.

“I'm sorry.””

She studied him.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I should have found you.””

“You didn't know where I was.””

“I should have known something was wrong.””

Emily squeezed his hand.

“Daniel, look at me.””

He did.

“You didn't put me under that floor.””

“No. But I let Vanessa into our home. I let her raise our daughter.””

“You trusted someone who knew exactly how to make you trust her. That's not the same as choosing to hurt me.””

He lowered his head.

For a moment, the only sound in the room was the steady beep of the monitor.

Then Daniel took a folded document from his jacket.

“I need to ask you something.””

Emily's expression changed when she saw the paper.

“Where did you get that?””

“It was in the documents recovered from the house.””

He showed her the amended birth certificate.

“Why did my father sign this?””

Emily stared at the page.

Her fingers began to tremble.

“Where is Thomas?””

“Gone. The police are looking for him.””

“Good.””

“Emily, what does this mean?””

She didn't answer.

Daniel leaned closer.

“There's a note about a trust file. There's a declaration about Mia's paternity. I need you to tell me the truth.””

Emily looked toward the closed hospital door.

Then she whispered, “Your father wasn't the only person who signed that document.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“Who else signed it?””

“Me.””

The word seemed to drain the air from the room.

“You signed a document questioning my paternity?””

“No.”” Emily's eyes filled with tears.

“I signed a declaration that Thomas forced me to sign. He told me it was an insurance document protecting Mia's inheritance.””

“Why would he need that?””

“Because he wanted control over the trust. He said that if anything happened to you, he needed a way to prevent another guardian from challenging his authority.””

Daniel stared at the paper.

“Was Mia ever in danger because of this?””

“Yes.””

Emily's answer was immediate.

She took a shaky breath.

“Thomas believed Mia's inheritance would become inaccessible if the courts questioned her legal parentage. He wanted a declaration that would allow him to challenge your position as her father if he ever needed to.””

Daniel stood and walked to the window.

The sun was beginning to rise over the hospital parking lot. Cars moved along the road beyond the glass, their headlights fading in the early morning light.

Everything outside looked ordinary.

Inside the room, his entire life was coming apart.

“Is Mia my daughter?”” he asked.

Emily began crying.

“Yes, Daniel. Of course she is.””

He turned.

“Then why did you sign it?””

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of my father?””

“Of all of them.””

She reached toward him.

“Daniel, I need you to understand. Thomas didn't just control the business. He controlled the lawyers, the accounts, and people in law enforcement. When I discovered the money transfers, he told me that if I refused to cooperate, he would make sure you lost everything.””

Daniel sat down again.

“What did the money transfers have to do with Mia?””

Emily hesitated.

“Your father used Mia's trust as collateral for loans that were never supposed to exist. He needed the declaration because he planned to move the money into a private account. If anyone challenged the transfer, he could claim the trust had been compromised by a dispute over Mia's legal parentage.””

Daniel felt sick.

“And Vanessa?””

“Vanessa was supposed to become Mia's guardian after you were gone. Thomas promised her a share of the money.””

Daniel looked at the document again.

“So the entire marriage was a plan.””

Emily nodded.

“She approached you because Thomas told her to. But I don't think she expected to fall in love with the power she gained.””

“Did she ever care about Mia?””

Emily looked away.

“She cared about owning her.””

A knock sounded at the door.

A nurse entered with a clipboard.

“Mrs. Mercer, there's someone here asking to see you. He says he's your attorney.””

Emily went rigid.

“What name did he give?””

“Richard Cole.””

Daniel stood.

“Tell him we're not seeing anyone without police clearance.””

The nurse nodded and stepped outside.

Emily grabbed Daniel's wrist.

“Richard Cole was Thomas's attorney.””

“Then he can speak to the police.””

“No.”” Emily's grip tightened.

“Daniel, he's the one who prepared the original documents. He knows where the money went.””

“That's exactly why he needs to talk.””

Emily shook her head.

“He won't tell you anything. He'll offer you a deal.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What kind of deal?””

“He'll offer to clear your name if you sign away your rights to Mia's trust.””

Daniel stared at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because he offered me the same deal three years ago.””

Before Daniel could respond, the hospital room door opened again.

A silver-haired man in an expensive suit stepped inside.

Richard Cole.

He carried a leather briefcase and wore a polite smile that never reached his eyes.

“Daniel. Emily.”” He glanced at the monitors.

“I'm relieved to see you alive, Emily.””

“Get out,” Emily said.

Cole ignored her.

“Daniel, I represent the Mercer family interests. Your father's situation is becoming rather complicated, and I believe we can resolve several matters quietly.””

“By doing what?””

Cole placed a document on the bedside table.

“Signing this agreement.””

Daniel glanced at the first page.

It was a temporary guardianship transfer.

His signature would grant Thomas authority over Mia's financial affairs until the trust dispute was resolved.

“You want me to give my father control over my daughter?””

“Only temporarily.””

Emily laughed bitterly.

“That's what you told me.””

Cole's smile faded.

“Mrs. Mercer, you should be resting.””

“You told me Thomas would protect Mia. Then you let him imprison me.””

“I was not involved in any imprisonment.””

“You drafted the papers that made it possible!””

Cole turned toward Daniel.

“Your wife is understandably distressed. I suggest you ignore anything she says until she's had time to recover.””

Daniel picked up the agreement and tore it in half.

Cole's expression hardened.

“You may regret that decision.””

“Get out.””

Cole closed his briefcase.

“You have until noon tomorrow to reconsider. After that, your father will be forced to take steps to protect the trust.””

Daniel stepped toward the door.

“Tell him to come himself.””

Cole paused.

Then he smiled.

“Your father has already made arrangements.””

He placed a small envelope on the table and left.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Mia standing outside the hospital, taken through the glass of the ambulance bay.

On the back, someone had written:

*SHE BELONGS TO THE FAMILY THAT CAN AFFORD TO KEEP HER.*

Daniel rushed to the window.

A black sedan was parked across the street.

Its engine started.

The vehicle pulled away before he could read the license plate.

He called the police and reported the photograph.

Then he returned to Emily's bedside.

“We're taking Mia somewhere safe.””

Emily nodded.

But before they could arrange anything, a nurse rushed into the room.

“Mr. Mercer, I'm sorry. Your daughter was moved to the pediatric observation unit while we cleaned the other room.””

Daniel's heart lurched.

“That's fine. I'll go get her.””

The nurse looked confused.

“She's not there.””

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

“What do you mean?””

“We were told her grandfather had permission to take her for a family visit.””

Emily screamed.

“Thomas!””

Daniel bolted into the hallway.

He ran past the nurses' station, past the elevators, and out through the hospital entrance.

A security guard was standing beside the curb.

“Did you see a little girl leaving with an older man?””

The guard nodded.

“About ten minutes ago. They got into a black sedan.””

Daniel gripped the guard's arm.

“Which direction?””

The guard pointed toward the road.

Daniel took out his phone and called the police.

Then an incoming message appeared.

A photograph.

Mia was sitting in the back seat of a car, crying.

Beside her was a man whose face Daniel had never seen before.

The message beneath the photograph contained a single sentence.

*IF YOU WANT YOUR DAUGHTER BACK, BRING THE ORIGINAL TRUST FILE TO THE OLD MERCER ESTATE. COME ALONE.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

*AND DON'T TELL EMILY WHAT WE DID TO HER FIRST CHILD.*
