Chapter 7: The Recording That Could Destroy Them All

Daniel had spent his entire life believing that the worst thing a father could do was abandon his child.

That night, standing outside his burning home with his eight-year-old daughter trembling against his chest, he discovered there were far worse things.

A father could betray his family.

A father could bury the truth.

And a father could watch his son mourn a dead wife while knowing she was still alive beneath his own house.

Thomas Mercer was walking toward him when Daniel slipped the black recording device into his pocket.

“Daniel,” Thomas said, adjusting his overcoat, “you need to calm down.””

Daniel rose slowly.

“Who did you call?””

Thomas stopped.

“What?””

“I saw you make a call. Who did you call?””

His father glanced toward the firefighters battling the flames.

“Someone who can help us manage this disaster.””

“You mean someone who can help you bury another secret?””

Thomas's jaw tightened.

“Watch your mouth.””

Daniel almost laughed.

Even now, after everything, his father still spoke as though Daniel were a disobedient teenager standing in his office.

“You told Vanessa to keep Emily beneath the house.””

“I told her to keep Emily somewhere secure.””

“For three years?””

Thomas looked toward the ambulance.

“Emily knew too much. She was determined to destroy everything I built.””

“Everything you built?”” Daniel stepped closer.

“You mean your money?””

“Our family's future.””

“My wife was chained to a concrete floor!””

Thomas's expression hardened.

“And yet she's alive.””

Daniel struck him.

The punch landed across Thomas's jaw, sending him stumbling against a police cruiser.

Two officers immediately rushed forward.

“Sir, step back!””

Thomas raised one hand.

“Leave him alone.””

He touched his bleeding lip and looked at Daniel with cold disappointment.

“You've always been emotional. That's why I never intended for you to run the company.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You let me bury an empty coffin.””

“I did what was necessary.””

“You let me believe my wife was dead!””

“Because you would have ruined everything if you'd known the truth.””

Daniel's hands shook.

“What truth?””

Thomas leaned closer.

“Your father wasn't the only person who understood the value of that trust fund. Emily knew how to access it. Vanessa knew how to manipulate it. And you, Daniel, were the only person foolish enough to believe money couldn't destroy a family.””

Daniel wanted to hit him again.

Instead, he remembered the recording.

He remembered Vanessa's voice saying they would make him believe Emily was dead.

And he remembered Thomas's answer.

Make sure she never reaches the surface.

“Did you order Emily's death?”” Daniel asked.

Thomas didn't answer.

“Did you?””

Thomas looked toward Mia, who was sitting beside a paramedic with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders.

“Not here.””

Daniel's stomach twisted.

“You did.””

Thomas straightened his coat.

“You have no idea how many people would have been ruined if Emily had gone to the authorities. Employees. Investors. People who trusted me with their savings.””

“So you sacrificed her?””

“I protected thousands of people from financial ruin.””

“You protected yourself!””

Thomas's eyes narrowed.

For a moment, the mask slipped.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed to give you this life.””

Then he turned toward the waiting police officers.

“I believe my son is suffering a psychological episode. His wife has been missing for three years, and tonight he's been exposed to a traumatic situation. I recommend that you keep him away from the investigation until he can think clearly.””

Daniel watched him walk away.

The old Thomas had always known how to sound reasonable while doing terrible things.

That was what made him dangerous.

A paramedic approached Daniel.

“Your daughter says she has something important to tell you.””

Daniel hurried to Mia.

She was sitting on the back of an ambulance, clutching a paper cup of water.

“Daddy, did you hear the recording?””

He knelt in front of her.

“Yes, sweetheart.””

“Are they going to take Mommy away again?””

“No.”” Daniel took both her hands.

“Nobody is ever going to take your mother away from you again.””

Mia studied his face.

“You promise?””

“I promise.””

She leaned forward and whispered, “I heard Grandpa talking to Vanessa before the fire.””

Daniel went still.

“What did he say?””

“He told her that if the police found the box, everything would be over.””

“What box?””

Mia reached into her blanket and pulled out a small brass key.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

It was the same key she had used to open the hidden door behind the dryer.

“Where did you get this?””

“Mommy gave it to me when I was little. She said if anything happened to her, I should hide it somewhere nobody would look.””

Daniel stared at the key.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Vanessa said she'd hurt you if I did.””

His heart broke a little more.

He pulled Mia into his arms.

“You don't have to keep secrets for grown-ups anymore. Not from me. Not ever.””

She began to cry against his shoulder.

“I tried to tell you, Daddy. I tried so many times.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know. I'm sorry.””

A police officer approached.

“Mr. Mercer, we need to take your statement.””

Daniel stood.

“Before I give you anything, I want to speak to the officer in charge of this investigation.””

“That would be Detective Harlan.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Harlan is involved.””

The officer frowned.

“Excuse me?””

Daniel took out his phone and played the recording.

Vanessa's voice filled the air.

Then Thomas's.

The officer's expression changed.

“Where did you get this?””

“My daughter found it. It contains evidence of a conspiracy involving a missing person, attempted murder, and financial fraud.””

The officer immediately called his supervisor.

Within minutes, the atmosphere around the house changed. Officers separated witnesses. Firefighters were ordered to preserve the area around the hidden staircase. Harlan, who had been speaking to another deputy, suddenly began walking toward his vehicle.

Daniel pointed.

“That's him!””

Two officers intercepted the detective.

Harlan protested, showing his badge and shouting about jurisdiction.

Then one officer noticed the blood on his sleeve and asked him to place his hands on the hood of the patrol car.

Harlan's face turned furious.

“You don't know what you're doing!””

The officer cuffed him.

“Then you can explain it downtown.””

For the first time that night, Daniel felt something resembling hope.

But it lasted only seconds.

His phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A text appeared on the screen.

*YOU HAVE THE WRONG MAN. YOUR FATHER IS ONLY THE BEGINNING.*

A second message followed.

*CHECK YOUR DAUGHTER'S BIRTH CERTIFICATE.*

Daniel stared at the words.

Then he looked toward Mia.

A terrible possibility took shape in his mind.

He hurried to the ambulance, pulled out the small folder of documents the paramedic had collected from their home, and found Mia's birth certificate.

The document listed Daniel Mercer as her father.

But beneath his name was a second signature.

One he recognized from the recording.

Thomas Mercer.

His father hadn't merely hidden Emily's imprisonment.

He had signed a document filed six months before Mia was born.

A document that changed everything Daniel thought he knew about his daughter.

At the bottom, in tiny print, was a handwritten note.

*PATERNITY DECLARATION — AMENDED COPY. ORIGINAL HELD IN TRUST FILE 17-B.*

Daniel looked up sharply.

Across the street, Thomas was climbing into his sedan.

Before the car door closed, his father turned toward him and mouthed four words.

Ask Emily who you are.

May you like

Then the sedan pulled away.

And Daniel realized the next secret might be the one that destroyed his family for good.
