Chapter 1: The Thing Beneath the House

“Daddy, please don’t let her bury me down there!””

The voice came from beneath the wooden floorboards.

Daniel Mercer heard it just as he stepped into his Texas home, his briefcase slipping from his hand and hitting the tile with a heavy thud. For one impossible second, he thought the voice belonged to his eight-year-old daughter.

Then he saw Mia standing in the living room, her small hands trembling around a hammer, her cheeks streaked with tears.

And his wife, Vanessa, was reaching for her.

“What the hell is going on here?”” Daniel demanded.

Vanessa released Mia so quickly that the little girl stumbled backward into the couch.

“Your daughter has completely lost her mind!”” Vanessa snapped.

“Look at what she’s done to my floor!””

Several scratches marred the polished oak boards. A small dent marked one plank near the center of the living room.

Daniel barely glanced at the damage.

Mia ran straight to him and wrapped both arms around his waist.

“Daddy, you came home!”” she sobbed.

Daniel dropped to one knee and pulled her close. He could feel her entire body shaking.

“Hey, sweetheart. I'm here.”” He brushed the hair away from her wet face.

“Tell me what happened.””

Mia looked over his shoulder.

Vanessa stood beside the fireplace in her cream-colored blouse, her dark hair perfectly arranged despite the chaos. She held out one hand as though she were presenting evidence to a jury.

“She’s been hammering the floor for almost twenty minutes,” Vanessa said.

“I tried talking to her, but she started screaming that I was a witch.””

“Because you are!”” Mia cried.

“Mia!”” Daniel warned gently.

“No, Daddy! You have to believe me!””

Vanessa gave a short, bitter laugh.

“She's been telling these ridiculous stories ever since you left this morning. First, she said someone was crying in the walls. Then she claimed the kitchen cabinet whispered her name.

Now it's the floor.”” She folded her arms.

“Honestly, Daniel, she needs professional help.””

Daniel studied his daughter.

Mia had always been imaginative. Since her mother, Emily, died three years earlier, she'd sometimes talked to empty rooms or insisted she could hear familiar voices in her dreams.

But this was different.

There was something desperate in the way she clung to him.

“What exactly did you hear, baby?”” he asked.

Mia swallowed hard.

“A woman.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Oh, for God's sake.””

Daniel raised his hand without looking at his wife.

“Let her finish.””

Mia wiped her nose with her sleeve.

“She was crying. She said she couldn't breathe. Then she knocked on the wood.”” Mia pointed at the damaged plank.

“I told her I'd get you. But she said you weren't the one she was afraid of.””

Daniel felt a chill travel up his spine.

“What did she say she was afraid of?””

Mia looked at Vanessa.

The room went strangely quiet.

“She said the lady in our house would come back.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

It was subtle. A tightening around the mouth. A flicker in her eyes.

But Daniel saw it.

“Vanessa?”” he asked.

His wife recovered almost immediately.

“This is absurd.”” She snatched a throw pillow from the couch and straightened it with sharp, angry movements.

“I'm not standing here while an eight-year-old accuses me of being some kind of monster.””

Mia pressed her face into Daniel's shoulder.

“You told me not to tell him,” she whispered.

Daniel went still.

Vanessa's hands stopped moving.

“Excuse me?”” Daniel asked.

Mia lifted her head.

“You said if I told Daddy about the crying, you'd send me away. You said nobody would believe me because Mommy isn't here anymore.””

Daniel slowly turned toward his wife.

Vanessa stared at Mia with an expression Daniel had never seen on her face before.

Not irritation.

Not embarrassment.

Fear.

“She's twisting everything,” Vanessa said.

“You know how children exaggerate.””

Daniel stood.

“Then you won't mind if I check under the floor.””

Vanessa stepped directly into his path.

“No.””

The word came out too quickly.

Daniel blinked.

“What?””

“I said no. Those boards are expensive, and you're not going to destroy the house because Mia had another nightmare.””

“Then there's nothing to worry about.””

“Daniel, please.”” Vanessa lowered her voice and reached for his hand.

“Think about what you're doing. You come home after a long day, and instead of trusting your wife, you believe a child who can't distinguish fantasy from reality?””

He looked down at her hand.

For the first time since their wedding, her touch made him uncomfortable.

He gently pulled away.

“Move, Vanessa.””

Her face hardened.

“You'll regret embarrassing me like this.””

Daniel walked around her and retrieved the hammer.

Mia clutched his free hand.

“Daddy, be careful.””

He knelt and pressed his ear against the floor.

At first, he heard nothing but the distant hum of the refrigerator and the ceiling fan turning overhead.

Then came a sound.

Thump.

Daniel lifted his head.

Another sound followed.

Thump. Thump.

Three deliberate knocks from beneath the oak boards.

Mia began crying again.

“That's her! That's the woman!””

Vanessa backed toward the staircase.

“Daniel, stop.””

He stared at the floor.

“Who's down there?””

Silence.

Then a faint scraping noise traveled beneath the boards, followed by a muffled cry.

“Please…”

Daniel's blood turned cold.

It was a woman's voice.

He raised the hammer and struck the plank.

The first blow split the wood.

The second broke it apart.

A third sent a piece of oak tumbling into the darkness beneath the house.

Daniel crouched over the opening and aimed his phone flashlight into the gap.

At first, he saw only dirt, old support beams, and a tangle of pipes.

Then the light caught something pale.

A hand.

A human hand, reaching upward through the darkness.

Daniel staggered backward.

“Oh, my God.””

Mia screamed.

Vanessa made a sound behind him that was almost a gasp.

Daniel turned toward her, his face drained of color.

“Vanessa…” His voice trembled.

“What have you done?””

She shook her head violently.

“You don't understand.””

From beneath the floor came another knock.

Then a woman's voice whispered a name that made Daniel's entire world collapse.

“Daniel…”

He knew that voice.

He had heard it every morning for twelve years.

He had heard it laughing in the kitchen, singing Mia to sleep, and whispering promises in the hospital room where he had watched his first wife die.

It was Emily.

May you like

His dead wife.

And she was calling him from beneath his house.
