Chapter 6: The Woman Who Wore Emily's Face

“Everybody back!”” an officer shouted.
The upstairs curtains caught fire first, orange flames crawling across the fabric before spreading toward the ceiling. Smoke poured from the broken window and drifted over the roof.
Daniel ran toward the front door.
A firefighter grabbed his shoulder.
“You can't go inside!””
“My wife is trapped under the house!””
“We're evacuating the building!””
“She can't get out!””
Daniel fought against the firefighter's grip.
Thomas stepped between them.
“Daniel, listen to me. If you go inside now, you'll die before you reach her.””
Daniel shoved his father away.
“You've done enough listening for one lifetime.””
He broke free and raced toward the side entrance.
The heat hit him before he reached the door. Smoke curled through the laundry room window, and the alarm screamed overhead.
He pulled his shirt over his mouth and stumbled inside.
The house no longer looked like the home where he had raised his daughter. Flames reflected across the walls. Smoke turned the hallway into a dark tunnel.
“Emily!”” he shouted.
No answer.
He reached the laundry room and found the hidden panel standing open.
The staircase beyond it was filled with smoke.
Daniel dropped to his knees and descended.
At the bottom, he found the corridor illuminated by the red glow of an emergency lamp. The steel door remained chained shut.
“Emily!””
“Daniel!””
Her voice sounded weaker than before.
He grabbed the chain and pulled until the metal cut into his palms.
“I can't get it off!””
“Look beside the door!”” Emily shouted.
“There's a release lever behind the pipe!””
Daniel swept the flashlight across the wall.
A rusted lever sat behind a thick water pipe. He grabbed it and pulled.
Nothing happened.
He planted both feet against the wall and yanked harder.
The mechanism groaned.
A hidden bolt slid back with a loud clank.
The chain fell away.
Daniel seized the handle and pulled the door open.
Emily lay on a narrow mattress inside the small room.
She was thinner than he remembered, her hair cut unevenly around her shoulders. Bruises covered one arm. A metal cuff encircled her ankle, attached to a chain bolted into the concrete floor.
For a moment, Daniel could only stare.
Then she looked up.
“Daniel?””
He dropped beside her.
“Oh, God.””
She touched his face with trembling fingers.
“You came.””
He pulled her into his arms.
“I thought you were dead.””
“So did they.””
He held her carefully, afraid that even the slightest pressure might hurt her.
“I'm sorry,” he whispered.
“I'm so sorry.””
Emily closed her eyes against his shoulder.
“I know.””
A deep crack sounded overhead.
The ceiling shuddered, showering dust across their heads.
Daniel looked toward the corridor.
“We have to get out.””
He examined the chain around her ankle. It was attached to a heavy metal ring embedded in the concrete.
He grabbed a nearby wrench and tried to loosen the bolts.
Emily caught his wrist.
“Leave it.””
“What?””
“The key. Vanessa keeps the key on her necklace.””
Daniel looked at the cuff.
“Then I'll break the chain.””
“You won't have time.””
He struck the chain with the wrench.
The metal rang, but the links held.
Another crack echoed through the ceiling.
A burning piece of wood fell across the corridor.
Daniel coughed violently.
“I'm not leaving you here!””
Emily grabbed his shirt.
“Daniel, there's something you need to know about Mia.””
He froze.
“What about her?””
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“Vanessa didn't choose this family by accident. She knew about the trust before she ever met you. She knew Mia was the beneficiary.””
“I know.””
“No, Daniel. You don't understand.”” Emily struggled to sit upright.
“She wanted custody of Mia because the trust transfers full control to the child's legal guardian if both biological parents are declared deceased.””
Daniel's stomach turned.
“Both parents?””
“She planned to make you disappear, too.””
He stared at her.
“She was going to kill me?””
Emily nodded.
“The accident that supposedly killed me was meant to kill both of us. You were supposed to be driving that night.””
Daniel remembered the phone call that had changed everything.
Emily had asked him to meet her at a restaurant outside Austin. He had been delayed by a meeting and sent her home alone.
The car wreck happened less than an hour later.
“She told me the police found my car,” he whispered.
“They found a car. Not you.””
Emily reached for his hand.
“Vanessa had arranged everything. When you didn't get in the car, she had to change the plan.””
Daniel felt sick.
“Why keep you alive?””
“Because I had proof that the trust had been used to launder money. She needed my signature on a document confirming that I had transferred control willingly. When I refused, she kept me here until I changed my mind.””
Daniel looked toward the corridor.
“Then we're taking that proof to the police.””
Emily shook her head.
“The documents aren't here anymore.””
“Where are they?””
“Your father's study. Behind the fireplace.””
Daniel remembered the old room and the box his father had mentioned.
Before he could ask another question, footsteps sounded at the top of the stairs.
A figure appeared in the smoky doorway.
Vanessa.
Her hair was disheveled, and soot streaked her cheek. She held a small pistol in one hand and a brass key in the other.
“You always did know how to ruin a perfectly good evening,” she said.
Daniel stood in front of Emily.
“Stay away from us.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“You still think this is about your wife?””
She held up the key and let it swing from her fingers.
“This is about the money, Daniel. Everything else was just an inconvenience.””
“You imprisoned Emily.””
“I kept her alive.””
“You tried to kill me.””
“I tried to protect what should have been mine.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Your name was never on the trust.””
“Because your father made sure of that.”” Vanessa's voice rose.
“He promised me a future. He told me I would be rewarded for helping him clean up his business. Then he decided his precious granddaughter deserved everything.””
Emily struggled to stand.
“You were never promised Mia's inheritance,” she said.
“You were promised money to keep quiet.””
Vanessa's expression twisted.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed!””
“You sacrificed everyone around you,” Emily replied.
Vanessa raised the pistol.
“Enough.””
Daniel slowly lifted his hands.
“Vanessa, put the gun down.””
“Move away from her.””
“No.””
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
“You have five seconds.””
A distant siren wailed outside.
She glanced toward the staircase, then back at Daniel.
“You should have stayed at work today.””
She aimed the gun at Emily.
Daniel lunged.
The shot exploded through the corridor.
Emily screamed.
Daniel hit Vanessa's arm, sending the pistol spinning across the concrete. They crashed against the wall, struggling in the smoke.
Vanessa drove her knee into his stomach and clawed at his face.
“You ruined everything!”” she shrieked.
Daniel shoved her away.
She stumbled backward, grabbed the fallen pistol, and pointed it at him again.
Then a small voice rang out from the staircase.
“Leave my daddy alone!””
Mia stood in the doorway, clutching a fire extinguisher with both hands.
Behind her, Detective Harlan emerged through the smoke, his injured arm pressed against his chest.
Vanessa's face transformed.
For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.
“Harlan,” she whispered.
“You said you handled the girl.””
Harlan raised his uninjured hand.
“I did.””
Mia shook her head.
“No, you didn't.””
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small black device.
“I heard everything you said upstairs.””
Daniel stared at his daughter.
“Mia, get out of here!””
But Mia pressed a button.
A tiny red light began blinking.
“Mommy told me to keep this safe,” she said.
“She said if anything happened, I should give it to the police.””
Vanessa's gaze dropped to the device.
All the color drained from her face.
“Where did you get that?””
Mia backed away.
“From the teddy bear you threw in the trash.””
Harlan took a step toward her.
“Give it to me, sweetheart.””
“No!””
Mia hurled the device toward Daniel.
He caught it.
Vanessa screamed and lunged for him.
But before she could reach him, the entire ceiling groaned.
A burning beam crashed between them.
Fire swallowed the corridor.
Daniel grabbed Emily and pulled her toward the staircase. Mia seized his hand, coughing as smoke filled her lungs.
Behind them, Vanessa screamed for help.
Harlan shouted something Daniel couldn't hear.
Then the beam shifted, and the flames surged higher.
Daniel reached the stairs with Emily leaning heavily against him.
At the top, firefighters were breaking through the laundry room door.
They pulled the family into the night.
Daniel collapsed on the lawn beside Mia, holding his daughter against his chest while paramedics carried Emily toward an ambulance.
Across the yard, firefighters fought to contain the blaze.
Vanessa was nowhere to be seen.
Daniel looked down at the black device in his hand.
A small screen displayed a recording file.
He pressed play.
Static crackled through the speaker.
Then Vanessa's voice emerged, clear and unmistakable.
“If Emily won't sign the papers, we'll make Daniel believe she's dead. Once he's married to me, getting custody of Mia will be simple.””
Another voice answered.
Thomas Mercer.
“There's one problem, Vanessa.””
“What problem?””
“If Emily survives, she'll know who ordered the original hit.””
A pause followed.
Then Thomas spoke again.
“Make sure she never reaches the surface.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
He looked across the yard toward his father.
Thomas stood beside the police vehicles, speaking quietly to an officer.
Then, as though he felt Daniel watching, Thomas turned.
Their eyes met.
Thomas's expression changed.
He knew Daniel had heard the recording.
And when the ambulance doors closed around Emily, Thomas reached into his coat and pulled out a second phone.
He dialed a number.
“It's me,” he whispered.
“The recording survived.””
A pause.
Then he added the words that made Daniel's blood run cold.
“Proceed with the original plan.””
Thomas ended the call and slipped the phone away.
May you like
He looked directly at his son.
And smiled.
