Chapter 3: The Picture They Never Expected

I replayed my father’s voicemail three times.

Not because I didn’t hear him.

Because I couldn’t understand him.

“The person in the photo standing behind your house.””

I looked at the picture Riley had taken.

Me.

The key.

The SOLD sign.

The front porch.

Nothing else.

I zoomed in.

My heart started beating faster.

Behind me, through the front window, there was a reflection.

Someone standing inside the house.

Someone I didn’t remember seeing.

I immediately called Riley.

She answered on the second ring.

“Paige? Are you okay?””

“Riley, the picture you took…”

“What about it?””

“Look at the window.””

There was silence.

A few seconds later, she said quietly:

“Oh my God.””

I sat down.

“Do you recognize that person?””

“No.””

My throat tightened.

The person in the reflection was blurry.

But my family had reacted like they knew exactly who it was.

I called my father back.

He answered instantly.

“Paige.””

“What’s going on?””

“Where did you get that house?””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“Who sold it to you?””

“Dad, why are you asking me this?””

His voice became more urgent.

“Just answer me.””

I stood up.

“A real estate agent helped me. Why?””

My father didn’t respond.

Then I heard my mother crying in the background.

That scared me more than anything.

My mother rarely cried.

Not when I left home.

Not when I struggled through college.

Not when she missed my graduation.

“Dad,” I said slowly, “what is happening?””

He lowered his voice.

“Paige, you need to leave that house.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Go somewhere else tonight.””

“Why?””

Another silence.

Then he said:

“Because that house belonged to someone we know.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Who?””

Before he could answer, my mother grabbed the phone.

“Paige, please listen to us.””

Her voice sounded different.

Not dismissive.

Not distracted.

Afraid.

“Mom?””

“You don’t understand what you found.””

I looked around my living room.

My home.

The place I bought after years of doing everything alone.

“What exactly did I find?””

She hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“The reason Trevor got everything…”

I waited.

“The reason we always had money for him…”

My chest tightened.

“Mom?””

She started crying.

“Because we weren’t telling you the truth about where that money came from.””

I stared at the wall.

“What does that mean?””

No answer.

Only crying.

Then another sound came from the phone.

A man’s voice.

An older man.

Not my father.

“Is that Paige?””

My blood went cold.

“Who is that?””

My mother immediately said:

“Don’t hang up.””

The stranger spoke.

“Paige, my name is Daniel Brooks.””

I didn’t know that name.

But my father did.

Because I heard him whisper in the background:

“No…”

Daniel continued.

“I’m the reason your parents never wanted you asking questions.””

I stepped away from the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

The man took a deep breath.

“There’s something hidden in your house. Something your parents spent years trying to keep away from you.””

I looked around.

The empty walls.

The quiet rooms.

The house I thought I finally owned.

Then Daniel said the one sentence that changed everything.

“Paige, go to the basement and look behind the old wooden panel near the stairs.””

I stared toward the basement door.

My house suddenly felt unfamiliar.

May you like

Like I had been living inside someone else’s secret.

And when I opened that door, I had no idea I was about to discover why my family had called me forty-seven times.
