Chapter 16: The Man Behind The Secrets
Michael Carter walked toward my house like he belonged there.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not fear.
Not anger.
Confidence.
He moved slowly, calmly, like someone who had spent years believing the world would always make room for him.
Victoria stepped closer to me.
“Close the door.””
I didn’t move.
“I need to know the truth.””
Her eyes filled with urgency.
“Paige, some truths are dangerous.””
I looked at the man approaching my porch.
“Mine has been hidden my entire life.””
Michael stopped at the bottom of the steps.
For a moment, he simply looked at me.
Then he smiled.
It was a familiar smile.
Not because I had seen it before.
Because I had seen people use that same smile when they wanted something.
A smile meant to make you lower your guard.
“Paige.””
Hearing my name from him felt strange.
“You know who I am.””
“Yes.””
He looked at Victoria.
“So you found her.””
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“You should have stayed away.””
Michael laughed softly.
“Still pretending you’re the hero?””
I stepped between them.
“What do you want?””
His eyes moved to me.
“That’s a complicated question.””
“No.””
My voice was stronger than I expected.
“It’s actually simple.””
I held up the folder Victoria gave me.
“You want this.””
For the first time, his expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“You don’t understand what you have.””
“Then explain.””
Michael looked around my house.
“This place was supposed to be mine.””
I almost laughed.
“Of course.””
His jaw tightened.
“You think this is a joke?””
“No.””
I stared at him.
“I think you’re the same as everyone else.””
“What does that mean?””
“You think wanting something gives you the right to take it.””
The silence between us was heavy.
Michael looked at Victoria.
“She filled your head with stories.””
“No.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“I showed her the truth.””
Michael’s expression became cold.
“The truth?””
He looked back at me.
“Your grandmother was not the innocent person you think she was.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Don’t.””
“You want answers, don’t you?””
“Yes.””
“Then listen.””
I didn’t invite him inside.
But I let him speak.
Because after everything, I needed to know.
“My mother built an empire and convinced everyone she was perfect.””
“My grandmother?””
“Yes.””
He nodded.
“But she made mistakes.””
“Everyone does.””
“Not everyone destroys their own family.””
I crossed my arms.
“What did she do?””
Michael looked toward the house.
“She chose favorites.””
The words hit me.
Because I knew that feeling.
I had lived it.
“She chose you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She chose you over me.””
I stared at him.
“That’s why you’re angry?””
“You don’t understand.””
“No, I don’t.””
His voice became sharper.
“When she created the trust, she made me feel like I was nothing.””
I shook my head.
“So your solution was to steal from her?””
His face changed.
“I made mistakes.””
“That’s what everyone says when they get caught.””
Michael looked away.
For a second, I saw something underneath the anger.
Pain.
Real pain.
But pain did not excuse what he had done.
“Why did you involve my family?””
He looked at me.
“Because they were easy to manipulate.””
My breath caught.
“You admit it?””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“Your parents were desperate to keep Trevor successful.””
He smiled bitterly.
“Your brother was exactly like I expected.””
Trevor.
Even hearing his name made me angry.
“You used him.””
“I offered him a solution.””
“You almost destroyed my home.””
Michael shrugged.
“Your home was never the important part.””
I stepped closer.
“Then what was?””
His eyes moved to the folder.
“That.””
The evidence.
The recording.
The truth.
“What’s on it?””
Michael’s expression hardened.
“Something your grandmother should have destroyed.””
Victoria spoke quietly.
“The recording proves what happened.””
Michael looked at her.
“You still don’t understand.””
“What?””
He smiled.
“Your grandmother recorded everything.””
My heart stopped.
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew someone would betray her.””
I looked at the folder.
Then at Michael.
“And you’re afraid of it.””
For the first time, he looked angry.
“Give me that folder.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“Paige.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You don’t get to control this anymore.””
Michael stared at me.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“You really think your parents abandoned you because they didn’t love you?””
I froze.
“What?””
He smiled.
“Ask your father why he left your graduation.””
My chest tightened.
“What are you talking about?””
Michael took one step closer.
“Because he wasn’t at the restaurant with Trevor.””
I stared.
“What?””
Michael looked toward the street.
“He was somewhere else.””
My voice dropped.
“Where?””
May you like
Michael smiled.
“Finding out the truth about me.””
