Chapter 17: The Recording That Exposed Everyone
After Michael left, nobody spoke.
Not me.
Not Victoria.
Not even Riley, who stayed silent on the phone.
The entire world felt like it had shifted again.
Every answer created three more questions.
I looked at Victoria.
“Is he telling the truth?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
“Victoria.””
She sighed.
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“My father wasn’t at the restaurant?””
“No.””
“Where was he?””
She looked at the folder.
“With me.””
I froze.
“You were with my father?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Victoria looked down.
“Because he finally decided to tell the truth.””
I laughed quietly.
“After sixteen years?””
“Yes.””
I hated that everyone was always late.
Everyone found courage after the damage was done.
“Play the recording.””
Victoria opened the folder.
Inside was a small device.
Old.
Simple.
She pressed a button.
Static filled the room.
Then voices.
Michael.
And my father.
I recognized them immediately.
The recording was from years ago.
Michael’s voice came first.
“You’re making a mistake.””
My father sounded younger.
“You need to leave.””
“You think Eleanor will choose Paige?””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“She already has.””
Michael laughed.
“She’s a child.””
“She’s family.””
“She’s a child who doesn’t understand money.””
My father’s voice became angry.
“She understands more than you think.””
The recording paused.
Then Michael said:
“You’re going to regret this.””
My father answered:
“Maybe.””
A long silence.
Then:
“But at least I’ll be able to look at my daughter.””
I stopped breathing.
My father.
The man who missed my graduation.
The man who let me struggle.
The man I blamed.
He had stood up for me once.
Then the recording continued.
Michael’s voice became quieter.
“Your wife won’t agree.””
My father sighed.
“I know.””
“She’ll choose Trevor.””
Silence.
Then my father said:
“I know.””
The recording ended.
I stared at the device.
My father knew.
He knew.
He knew my mother would choose Trevor.
He knew what was happening.
And he still let it happen.
“He could have told me.””
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t he?””
She looked at me.
“Because he was afraid.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone was afraid.””
I looked around.
“Everyone except me.””
That sentence hung in the air.
Because it was true.
I had spent my entire life surviving things other people were too afraid to face.
My phone rang.
Dad.
I stared at the screen.
Then answered.
“Hi.””
His voice was quiet.
“You met Michael.””
“Yes.””
A pause.
“Did he give you the recording?””
I looked at Victoria.
“Yes.””
My father exhaled.
“I wanted you to hear it from me.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
And that seemed to surprise him.
“You wanted to tell me after you were sure.””
Silence.
“You always wait until the damage is done.””
“Paige…”
“No.””
I looked at the folder.
“I need you to answer one question.””
“Anything.””
“Were you at my graduation?””
Silence.
My heart started beating faster.
“Dad.””
Finally:
“Yes.””
The word hit harder than I expected.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where?””
His voice broke.
“I sat in the back.””
I couldn’t speak.
“Why?””
“I wanted to come.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Another silence.
Then:
“Because Michael threatened us.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He told us if we publicly supported you, he would release information that would destroy Trevor.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So you chose him again.””
“No.””
My father’s voice cracked.
“I chose fear.””
I looked down.
The distinction didn’t matter.
The result was the same.
“I watched you walk across that stage.””
My throat tightened.
“You saw me?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you come to me?””
His voice became barely audible.
“Because I was ashamed.””
For the first time, I believed him.
But belief didn’t erase pain.
Before I could answer, my father said:
“Paige, there’s something else.””
“What?””
“Michael wasn’t the only person protecting a secret.””
I went still.
“What do you mean?””
“He had help.””
“From who?””
My father hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Someone who has been close to you for years.””
The line went silent.
I looked at Victoria.
Then at Riley’s name on my phone.
My father continued:
“Paige…”
“Yes?””
“The person who sent those documents to Michael…”
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
May you like
My father answered:
“It was someone you trust.””
