Chapter 10: The Truth About Michael Carter

The room stayed silent after my mother’s final words.

Because sometimes a lie doesn’t hurt because it’s unbelievable.

It hurts because a small part of you already knows it might be true.

I looked at Robert.

“What does she mean?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Robert Hayes had been calm through everything.

The hidden box.

The stolen inheritance.

The forged documents.

But now, for the first time, he looked uncertain.

“Robert.””

He sighed.

“Your grandmother never wanted you involved in this.””

“Clearly nobody wanted me involved in anything.””

My voice came out sharper than I expected.

Trevor looked down.

I knew that feeling.

The feeling of realizing your entire family had been making decisions around you instead of with you.

Robert picked up the old photograph.

“This is Michael Carter.””

“My uncle.””

“Yes.””

“What did he do?””

Robert walked to the window.

“Your grandmother built her company from nothing. Your grandfather died young, and Michael helped her for many years.””

“So he was close to her.””

“Very.””

I looked at the photograph.

Michael was smiling beside my grandmother.

He looked trustworthy.

But I had learned something important.

Pictures didn’t tell the whole story.

“Then what happened?””

Robert turned around.

“When your grandmother became older, she began preparing for the future.””

“The inheritance.””

“Yes.””

“She planned to divide her assets fairly. Some would go to Michael. Some would go to charity. Some would go into your trust.””

I nodded.

“That sounds normal.””

“It was.””

“Until?””

Robert looked at Trevor.

“Until Michael discovered the trust.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Why would that matter?””

“Because Michael believed the money should stay within the older generation.””

I frowned.

“You mean he thought I shouldn’t get it?””

“Yes.””

Trevor finally spoke.

“So he wanted Grandma to give everything to him?””

Robert nodded.

“That was the beginning of the conflict.””

I looked at the documents.

“My grandmother chose me.””

“Yes.””

“And Michael hated that.””

“Yes.””

I sat down.

For years, my family had made Trevor the center of every story.

But now I was discovering another person who wanted control.

Another person who believed they deserved more.

“What did Michael do?””

Robert hesitated.

“He challenged the will.””

“Legally?””

“At first.””

“And later?””

Robert looked uncomfortable.

“Later, he became more aggressive.””

The room felt colder.

“What does aggressive mean?””

“He pressured your grandmother.””

I stared at him.

“How?””

“He tried to convince her that you were too young. That your parents would misuse the money. That you should not inherit anything until you were older.””

I laughed softly.

“That part was actually true.””

Nobody smiled.

Because it wasn’t funny.

Robert continued.

“But your grandmother refused.””

“She protected me.””

“Yes.””

I looked down.

The woman who protected me was gone.

And the people who were supposed to protect me had failed.

“What happened to Michael after that?””

Robert’s expression changed.

“He disappeared.””

“Disappeared?””

“He left town after the will was finalized.””

“Why?””

“We don’t know.””

I looked at the photograph.

“But he’s back.””

Robert nodded.

That sentence landed heavily.

“He’s the person in the reflection.””

“Yes.””

My heart started racing.

“How do you know?””

“Because I saw him.””

“When?””

“Yesterday.””

I stood up.

“You saw my uncle at my house?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I was trying to understand why he was there.””

My anger rose.

“Everyone keeps saying they’re protecting me.””

Robert lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

He didn’t argue.

He didn’t defend himself.

He admitted it.

“I’m sorry, Paige.””

I looked away.

Apologies were becoming a strange thing.

Everyone had one now.

Everyone was sorry.

But none of them were sorry before I got hurt.

Trevor suddenly stood.

“I need to talk to you.””

I looked at him.

“About what?””

“About Michael.””

“You know something?””

He nodded slowly.

“I think I do.””

Robert looked at him.

“Trevor.””

“No.””

My brother shook his head.

“She deserves to know.””

I crossed my arms.

“Know what?””

Trevor swallowed.

“When I was trying to sell the house…”

He paused.

“I wasn’t alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“There was someone helping me.””

“Who?””

Trevor looked toward the front window.

The same window where the reflection had appeared.

Then he said:

“Michael.””
