Chapter 8: The Woman in the Photograph

I couldn't speak.
Someone from my family?
I looked at Daniel.
He was watching me, waiting for Chloe to explain.
"Chloe," I said carefully, "who is the woman?""
"I don't know her name.""
"Describe her.""
"Dark hair. Shoulder length. She was wearing a black dress. Vanessa showed us another photograph, and I recognized her from your engagement party.""
I looked at Sophie.
She was already shaking her head.
"Emma, what is she talking about?""
I put the phone on speaker.
"Chloe, did Vanessa say she was related to me?""
"She said the woman was someone Daniel had been seeing secretly. But she also said the woman had been at your engagement party.""
My mind raced through the guest list.
My mother.
My aunts.
My cousins.
My father's sisters.
There were dozens of women at the engagement party.
"Did she say anything about the photograph's location?""
"She said it was taken outside the Sterling House.""
I opened the photograph again.
The woman's face was hidden.
But her bracelet was visible.
A silver chain with a small blue stone.
I turned toward Sophie.
"Do you recognize that bracelet?""
Sophie looked at the image.
Her face changed.
"Oh, no.""
"What?""
She sat down.
"That's Aunt Laura's bracelet.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
Laura was my mother's younger sister.
She'd been there at our engagement party.
She'd also been the person who helped me choose my wedding flowers.
But there was something else.
She had been with Daniel on the evening of December 14.
Not secretly.
Not romantically.
I'd been on the phone with her that night.
She'd called Daniel because she'd had a problem with her car after leaving the restaurant.
Daniel had gone to help her.
I'd forgotten about it.
I looked at him.
"That's what happened, isn't it?""
He nodded.
"Yes. Laura's car wouldn't start. She called me because she knew I was nearby.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I did. You were sick, and I texted you that I'd helped your aunt with her car.""
I searched my messages.
There it was.
Your Aunt Laura's car broke down. I'm helping her get home. I'll be back soon.
A second message followed.
She's fine. Don't worry.
I remembered replying with a heart.
The photograph wasn't proof of an affair.
It was a picture of Daniel helping my aunt.
And Vanessa had deliberately removed the context.
"She's using my family," I whispered.
Daniel nodded.
"She's using anything she can find.""
I called Aunt Laura.
She answered on the second ring.
"Emma! Are you getting ready? I can't wait to see you.""
"Aunt Laura, I need to ask you something.""
Her voice immediately changed.
"What's wrong?""
"Do you remember December 14? Your car broke down near the Sterling House.""
"Of course. Daniel was wonderful. He came out in the cold and helped me.""
"Did anyone take a photograph?""
There was a pause.
"I don't know. Why?""
I explained the situation.
When I finished, she was silent for several seconds.
Then she said, "That girl.""
"What?""
"Vanessa.""
I sat upright.
"What do you mean?""
Laura sighed.
"She called me three weeks ago.""
My heart began pounding.
"What did she want?""
"She asked me about that evening. She wanted to know whether Daniel had been alone with me.""
I looked at Daniel.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I didn't think it mattered," Laura replied.
"I told her exactly what happened.""
"Did she ask you to lie?""
"She asked whether I would confirm that Daniel had been with me for longer than he claimed.""
I felt sick.
"Why?""
"She said she was worried about you. She suggested Daniel might have been seeing someone else that evening.""
I closed my eyes.
Laura continued.
"I told her she was being ridiculous. Then she asked me not to mention the conversation to you because she didn't want to upset you before the wedding.""
I looked at Sophie.
Vanessa had been collecting information from everyone around me.
She'd been turning ordinary events into suspicious stories, then waiting for the right moment to reveal them.
"Do you still have the call?"" I asked.
"No recording, but I have the date and time. I also sent your mother a message afterward because I thought Vanessa was behaving strangely.""
"Can you forward it to Detective Miller?""
"Of course.""
After the call, I sat quietly.
Then Daniel said, "Emma, there's something else.""
I turned.
He looked uncomfortable.
"Last month, Mark asked me to approve a change to the company's banking access.""
"What kind of change?""
"He wanted administrative access to the account used for employee reimbursements. I refused because the request wasn't properly documented.""
"Could that be connected to the transfer?""
"Possibly. I need compliance to check.""
He opened his email and searched for the request.
A moment later, he found it.
The email was dated September 9.
Mark had written:
For efficiency, I recommend temporary access to the executive payment profile while we prepare the quarterly reconciliation.
Daniel had replied:
No. All financial changes must go through compliance.
I read the exchange.
"Did he ever get access?""
"No.""
Daniel scrolled further.
"Wait.""
There was another email.
This one had been sent three days later.
It was from Mark to Vanessa.
The subject line read:
Plan B.
Daniel opened it.
The message was brief.
He refused the access request. We'll use Emma's old device instead.
I stared at the screen.
They'd planned this before the wedding.
Before the hotel.
Before the recording.
Vanessa hadn't suddenly become desperate because Daniel was getting married.
She'd been preparing to destroy us for weeks.
At 10:02, Detective Miller called.
"Ms. Carter, we've reviewed the screenshots and spoken with the hotel. We have enough to pursue the suspected forged authorization and theft.
We're also arranging to speak with Ms. Reed.""
"Can you stop her from showing those documents at the reception?""
"We can warn the venue and make sure the evidence is preserved. We can't control every conversation she has with your guests.""
I understood.
Then she added:
"There's something else. Your friend Chloe has agreed to provide a statement.""
I glanced at my phone.
"Thank you.""
"She's also told us that Ms. Reed may have access to another document that could be relevant.""
"The backup?""
"Possibly. We're arranging to examine it.""
At 10:14, Claire sent a photograph of the ballroom.
The tables were decorated.
White flowers.
Candles.
The gold-framed seating chart.
My name and Daniel's name stood together on a large sign near the entrance.
It should have been the most beautiful morning of my life.
Instead, I was watching a woman who'd once been my closest friend prepare to humiliate me in front of two hundred guests.
Then my phone rang again.
Vanessa.
I answered.
"Emma, darling!""
Her voice was bright.
"I've been trying to find you everywhere.""
"I'm here.""
"Good. We need to talk.""
"About what?""
"About the surprise.""
I waited.
She lowered her voice.
"I think you deserve to know the truth before you marry Daniel.""
I looked at him.
He shook his head.
"What truth, Vanessa?""
"The truth about the money.""
"Which money?""
"The eighty-five thousand dollars.""
I said nothing.
She continued.
"I know you've seen the transfer request.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"How do you know that?""
A pause.
Then Vanessa laughed.
"Because, Emma, I've been trying to protect you.""
"From what?""
"From Daniel.""
I looked at the clock.
10:19.
"Vanessa, tell me something.""
"Anything.""
"Did you really think I'd believe you?""
Her voice hardened.
"You don't understand what I've done for you.""
"No. I think I'm finally beginning to understand.""
She went quiet.
Then she said:
"Fine. If you won't listen to me privately, everyone will hear it at the reception.""
The call ended.
Daniel took my hand.
"She's going to do it.""
"Yes.""
He looked at me.
"Then let's get married.""
I smiled faintly.
But before I could answer, Detective Miller sent a message.
We have located the additional document. You need to see this before the ceremony.
A photograph followed.
It showed a printed agreement.
At the bottom were two signatures.
One belonged to Vanessa.
The other belonged to Daniel.
May you like
And above them was a title that made my heart stop.
*MARRIAGE AND ASSET AGREEMENT.*
