Chapter 7: The Eighty-Five-Thousand-Dollar Trap

For three seconds, nobody moved.

My phone was still displaying the bank notification.

*A transfer request of $85,000 has been submitted for verification.*

I read it again.

Then a third time.

"That's impossible," I whispered.

Daniel took the phone from my hand.

"Call the bank.""

I was already dialing.

The automated system asked me to verify my identity, then transferred me to a fraud specialist. I explained that I hadn't authorized any transfer and that I suspected someone had obtained access to my account information.

A woman named Patricia answered.

"Ms. Carter, I can see the transaction you're referring to. It's currently pending additional verification.""

"Cancel it.""

"I'll need to establish whether the request was submitted by you or someone acting on your behalf.""

"It wasn't me.""

"Do you recognize the receiving account?""

I looked at the number on the document Daniel was holding.

"No.""

"All right. I'm placing a temporary restriction on outgoing transfers while we investigate.""

"Can you tell me who submitted it?""

There was a pause.

"According to our records, the request was submitted through your online banking profile.""

My stomach dropped.

"From my computer?""

"From a registered device, yes.""

"Which device?""

Patricia gave me the device description.

It was an old laptop I'd sold six months earlier.

I stared at the wall.

"That laptop hasn't belonged to me for months.""

"Do you still have the original purchase or sale documentation?""

"Yes.""

"Please preserve it. We'll need to investigate how your credentials were accessed.""

Daniel leaned closer.

"Ask whether the request included a verification document.""

I repeated the question.

Patricia checked.

"Yes. There's an uploaded authorization form.""

My mouth went dry.

"Can you describe it?""

"It appears to be a signed instruction authorizing the transfer.""

"That's fraudulent.""

"I understand. I've flagged the transaction for suspected identity theft.""

The call ended with a reference number and instructions to visit a branch with identification.

I sat down.

For the first time since hearing Vanessa through the hotel wall, I felt something close to fear.

She hadn't simply wanted to ruin my wedding.

She'd used my personal information to attempt a financial crime.

Daniel crouched in front of me.

"Look at me.""

I did.

"We'll stop this.""

"What if she already has more information?""

"Then we'll find out.""

Sophie was pacing near the window.

"How did she get your old laptop?""

"I sold it online.""

"To whom?""

I opened my email and searched for the sale receipt.

The buyer's name appeared.

Mark Ellison.

Daniel stood.

"You're kidding.""

I shook my head.

The laptop had been sold through a local secondhand electronics marketplace. I remembered the transaction now. Mark had offered to collect it because he lived near the office.

At the time, he'd said he needed a spare computer for his home office.

I'd been grateful to avoid arranging delivery.

"Did you wipe it?"" Daniel asked.

"Yes. I restored the factory settings.""

He looked at the sale receipt.

"That doesn't necessarily mean every stored credential or backup was inaccessible.""

My phone rang again.

Detective Miller.

I explained the transfer request and the laptop connection.

She became very serious.

"Do not confront either Vanessa or Mr. Ellison. Preserve every notification, email, and document. We'll coordinate with the bank's fraud team.""

"Can you stop them?""

"We're investigating. The fact that the transaction is pending is important. Don't attempt to access the old device or communicate with the suspected individuals.""

I agreed.

Then she asked a question.

"Ms. Carter, did you ever share your banking password with your maid of honour?""

"No.""

"Did she have access to your personal documents?""

I thought about it.

Vanessa had helped me organize the wedding budget. She'd seen invoices, payment confirmations, and some of my financial planning spreadsheets.

But she had never been given my banking credentials.

"She had access to some financial documents, but not my account.""

"All right. We'll need that information.""

At 8:42, Claire called again.

"Emma, I'm sorry, but you need to know what's happening downstairs.""

"What now?""

"Vanessa is telling people that you're having a breakdown.""

I closed my eyes.

"What?""

"She's telling the bridesmaids that Daniel has been involved in something dishonest and that you're struggling to process it.""

Daniel took the phone.

"Claire, this is Daniel. Do not let her speak to any guests on our behalf.""

"Understood.""

"And nobody connects a personal laptop to the projector.""

"She's already asked the technician to do it.""

"Tell him not to.""

Claire hesitated.

"She's threatening to cancel the reception if we refuse.""

Daniel's voice became firm.

"She has no authority to cancel anything.""

After the call, Sophie grabbed her coat.

"I'm going downstairs.""

"No," I said.

"Emma, she's destroying your reputation in front of everyone.""

"Let her talk.""

Sophie stared at me.

"Are you serious?""

"Yes. If she thinks we're frightened, she'll become careless.""

Daniel nodded.

"We need to know what she's planning to show.""

I checked the time.

9:03 a.m.

The wedding ceremony was less than two hours away.

I looked at the dress hanging inside its garment bag.

Then at the four minutes and eleven seconds of recorded evidence on my phone.

Vanessa believed she had prepared every move.

But she'd made one mistake.

She thought I would spend the morning defending myself.

I wasn't going to.

At 9:17, a message arrived from Chloe.

Emma, I found something in Vanessa's room. I think you need to see it.

A photograph followed.

It showed an open notebook on a bedside table.

The page contained several handwritten names.

Daniel.

Emma.

Mark.

Rebecca.

Chloe.

And beside my name, Vanessa had written:

Make her look unstable before the ceremony.

Underneath was another line.

If she refuses, use the backup.

I immediately called Chloe.

"What is the backup?""

She sounded frightened.

"I don't know. But there's another envelope.""

"Where?""

"Inside her suitcase.""

"Don't touch anything. Tell Detective Miller.""

Chloe started crying.

"Emma, there's something else. Vanessa told Rebecca that if Daniel didn't cooperate, she would show him the photograph from December and tell everyone what happened that night.""

I gripped the phone.

"Nothing happened that night.""

"I know.""

"Then what is she threatening him with?""

Chloe whispered:

"She's saying she has proof he was with another woman.""

I looked at Daniel.

He had heard every word.

Then Chloe added:

"Emma, the woman in that photograph isn't Rebecca.""

"Who is it?""

May you like

There was a pause.

"It's someone from your family.""
