Chapter 2: The Woman Who Held the Rings

At 3:04 a.m., Daniel arrived outside my bridal suite.

He didn't knock immediately.

I watched him through the peephole, standing in the corridor wearing yesterday's jeans and a grey T-shirt. His hair was messy, and he was holding his phone in one hand.

When I opened the door, he looked at me as though he'd just watched our entire future collapse.

"Can I come in?"" he asked.

I stepped aside.

He entered and immediately noticed the wedding dress.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he walked toward me.

"Emma, I'm so sorry.""

"Don't apologize for something you didn't do.""

"I should have told you.""

"Tell me what?""

He sat on the small sofa near the window.

"Vanessa has been contacting me privately for almost a year.""

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

"Almost a year?""

"Since last Christmas.""

I sat opposite him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I thought she was just being overly friendly. And because every time I mentioned something strange, you defended her.""

I looked down.

He continued.

"Remember when she insisted on driving me home after your engagement dinner?""

"Yes.""

"She told me she'd had too much to drink and needed to leave early. I offered to call her a cab. She said she was fine, then spent the entire drive talking about how unhappy you supposedly were.""

I frowned.

"I wasn't unhappy.""

"I know that now. But she told me you were having doubts about the wedding.""

"She said that?""

"She said you were overwhelmed, that you sometimes wondered whether we'd moved too quickly, and that you were afraid of marrying someone who might eventually get bored with you.""

I stared at him.

Those were almost exactly the words Vanessa had used when we'd spoken privately.

She'd told me Daniel was becoming distant.

She'd told me men sometimes panicked before marriage.

She'd told me not to mistake his silence for certainty.

"She was creating problems," I whispered.

Daniel nodded.

"She was creating problems and then offering herself as the person who understood both sides.""

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

"There's more.""

He opened a message thread and handed it to me.

The first message was dated January 17.

Daniel, I know Emma is your priority, but I think you deserve someone who understands how hard you work.

The next was from February.

You don't have to pretend you're completely happy just because everyone expects this wedding to happen.

Then another.

I wish you'd met me before you met her.

I scrolled slowly.

Some messages were long.

Others were just photographs of places she knew he liked, invitations to coffee, and complaints about how little attention he supposedly received.

One message made my stomach turn.

If you ever need to remember what it feels like to be wanted, you know where to find me.

I handed the phone back.

"Did you reply?""

"Sometimes. Politely. I told her I loved you and wanted her to respect that.""

"Why didn't you block her?""

"Because she was your best friend. I didn't want to create a situation where you'd feel forced to choose between us.""

I looked at him.

"And now?""

His expression hardened.

"Now I wish I'd blocked her the first time she crossed the line.""

My phone buzzed.

A message from my cousin, Sophie.

I'm awake. What's happening?

I called her.

She answered immediately.

"Emma, I've got your message. I'm coming over.""

"Bring your laptop. And please don't use the main corridor.""

"Okay. Is everything all right?""

"No," I said.

"But it will be.""

Twenty minutes later, Sophie arrived carrying a laptop, two coffees, and a small suitcase.

She took one look at Daniel's face.

"Oh, this is bad.""

I played the recording.

She listened without interrupting.

When Vanessa's voice said, She doesn't deserve him, Sophie's mouth fell open.

When the discussion reached the rings, she stopped the recording.

"Where are they?""

"Vanessa has them," I said.

Sophie put her coffee down.

"You're joking.""

"I wish I were.""

The rings were supposed to be in a small velvet box inside Vanessa's handbag. She'd offered to keep them safe because she'd organized the ring ceremony schedule.

Sophie stood.

"Right. I'll get them.""

"No," Daniel said.

She turned.

"Why not?""

"Because if Vanessa realizes we know, she might do something before we can stop her.""

Sophie looked at me.

"Then what?""

I opened the wedding planning folder on my laptop.

There was a document titled Friday Final Checklist.

I had shared it with Vanessa, Sophie, and our wedding planner, Claire.

Beside the rings was a note.

Vanessa to deliver to ceremony coordinator at 10:30 a.m.

I checked the document history.

The original note had been changed two days earlier.

The new version read:

Vanessa to retain until ceremony.

"She changed this," I said.

Sophie leaned closer.

"Why?""

"Because she wants control of the rings until the last possible moment.""

Daniel stood and walked toward the window.

"Emma, we can cancel the wedding.""

I looked at him.

He turned around.

"I'm serious. We don't have to go through with anything tomorrow.""

I studied his face.

There was no anger directed at me. No frustration. Only concern.

And that made my decision easier.

"I don't want to cancel our wedding because Vanessa has decided she wants your life.""

He nodded slowly.

"Then we'll protect it.""

Sophie opened her laptop.

"What do you need me to do?""

"First, collect the dress from this room. Take it to the new suite. Don't let anyone touch the garment bag.""

"Done.""

"Second, call Claire. Tell her we're changing the room assignments and that Vanessa is no longer authorized to handle anything.""

Sophie started typing.

"Third," Daniel said, "I'll contact the venue security manager.""

I looked at him.

"Not yet. I want the rings secured first.""

He nodded.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it was Claire.

Emma, I just received a strange request from Vanessa. She wants the ceremony moved forward by twenty minutes and says you've approved it.

I stared at the message.

"She hasn't wasted any time.""

I called Claire.

"Don't change anything," I said.

"Emma, what's going on?""

"I'll explain when I see you. For now, Vanessa is not authorized to make decisions on my behalf.""

Claire went quiet.

Then she said, "Understood. There's something else you should know.""

"What?""

"She collected the rings from the hotel safe yesterday afternoon.""

I looked at Daniel.

He stopped moving.

"Why?"" I asked.

"She said she wanted to check the engraving before tomorrow.""

"Did you give them to her?""

"No. The hotel safe released them to the person listed on the collection authorization.""

I opened my email.

There it was.

A scanned authorization form.

My name was at the bottom.

My signature.

Except I hadn't signed it.

Sophie moved closer to the screen.

"Emma?""

I zoomed in.

The signature looked almost identical to mine.

But the date was wrong.

And the authorization had been submitted from an email account I hadn't used in months.

Daniel leaned over my shoulder.

"Who sent that?""

I checked the sender details.

My mouth went dry.

The email account belonged to Vanessa.

And attached to the authorization was a photograph of my signature taken from an old document.

Then another notification appeared.

May you like

It was from the hotel duty manager.

Ms. Emma, we've checked the security footage. There is something you should see immediately.
