Chapter 5: The Photograph That Changed Everything

Detective Miller placed the envelope inside a clear evidence sleeve.
"Nobody touches this until we've documented it.""
I watched her photograph every side.
My mind was racing.
Why had Vanessa dropped it?
Had she intended to leave it somewhere Daniel would find it?
Or was it meant for me?
"Is there anything dangerous inside?"" Sophie asked.
"We don't have any reason to believe that," Detective Miller replied.
"But we'll handle it properly.""
After the initial documentation, she opened the envelope.
Inside was a single photograph and a folded sheet of paper.
The photograph showed Daniel standing outside a restaurant.
He was wearing the navy jacket I'd bought him for his birthday.
A woman stood beside him.
Her face was turned away from the camera, but her hand rested against his chest.
I felt the room tilt.
"That's Daniel," I whispered.
He leaned forward.
"Yes.""
Sophie covered her mouth.
The folded paper contained one sentence.
He told me he would leave you before the wedding.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked genuinely stunned.
"Emma, that never happened.""
I swallowed.
"Do you recognize the woman?""
He studied the photograph.
"No.""
"Look carefully.""
"I am.""
He took a closer look at the woman's hand.
Then his expression changed.
"Wait.""
He pointed to her wrist.
A silver bracelet with a small blue stone.
"I know that bracelet.""
My heart sank.
"Who does it belong to?""
"Your cousin's friend. Rebecca.""
Sophie frowned.
"Rebecca? The woman who works at the restaurant?""
Daniel nodded.
"She was at the engagement party. She knows Vanessa.""
I looked at the photograph again.
"Have you ever been alone with her?""
"No.""
"Have you ever met her outside a group?""
"Once, maybe. At a charity event.""
Daniel took a breath.
"But Emma, look at the background.""
I followed his finger.
Behind them was a restaurant entrance with a large illuminated sign.
I recognized the place immediately.
The Sterling House.
I'd been there with Daniel for our anniversary.
But something didn't fit.
The restaurant had closed for renovations in January.
I remembered because we'd tried to book a table for Valentine's Day and found it unavailable.
I checked the photograph's details.
The image had been printed, but the date stamp was visible in the corner.
December 14.
Daniel looked at me.
"That's the night I went to the company Christmas dinner.""
I remembered that night.
I'd been invited but had caught a terrible cold.
Daniel had gone alone.
He'd returned shortly after midnight with takeaway soup and a small gift he'd bought for me.
"Where did you go after dinner?"" I asked.
"Straight home.""
"Did you stop anywhere?""
"No.""
I looked at the photograph.
"Could this be from another day?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Look at my jacket. That's the one you gave me. I wore it that night.""
Detective Miller studied the image.
"Do you have any other photographs from that evening?""
Daniel opened his phone.
He scrolled through his camera roll until he found a group photograph from the company dinner.
There he was.
Same jacket.
Same shirt.
Same watch.
And beside him stood three colleagues.
Rebecca wasn't among them.
He opened the photograph's information.
The timestamp read 9:42 p.m.
The photograph Vanessa had placed in the envelope was clearly taken on the same evening.
But the background didn't make sense.
"Could she have followed you?"" Sophie asked.
Daniel shook his head.
"Possibly. But I didn't see her.""
I looked at the woman's hand again.
There was something familiar about it.
Not the bracelet.
The nails.
Short, square, painted dark red.
I remembered Vanessa's photograph of the champagne glasses.
The lipstick mark.
The red nails.
"Daniel," I said slowly, "what color are Vanessa's nails?""
He looked at me.
"Red.""
I turned to Detective Miller.
"Can you examine the photograph?""
She nodded.
"Of course.""
I stared at the image again.
The woman might have been wearing Rebecca's bracelet.
But the hand looked like Vanessa's.
And suddenly, I understood something.
The photograph might not have been evidence of an affair.
It might have been evidence of a carefully staged encounter.
At 7:03, my phone rang.
It was an unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A woman's voice spoke quickly.
"Emma? It's Chloe.""
I sat upright.
"Chloe?""
"Please don't hang up.""
I looked at Detective Miller.
Chloe continued.
"I know you're angry. I know what you heard last night.""
"Then why are you calling?""
She began crying.
"Because Vanessa told us you already knew.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"She said Daniel had told you everything. She said the wedding was still happening because you were too embarrassed to cancel it.""
I looked at Daniel.
He shook his head.
"That's not true," I said.
"I know that now.""
"Why are you calling me?""
There was a long silence.
Then Chloe whispered:
"Because Vanessa has another plan. And this one isn't about the dress.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"What plan?""
"She's going to show everyone something during the reception.""
"What?""
"An email.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"What email?""
Chloe took a shaky breath.
"An email that supposedly proves Daniel has been secretly transferring money from your company account.""
I stared at Daniel.
He looked confused.
"My company account?""
I nodded.
Chloe continued.
"Vanessa said she'd show it during the speeches. She wants everyone to think Daniel married you for your money.""
Daniel stood.
"That's impossible.""
"I know," Chloe said.
"But she has screenshots. She showed us.""
I closed my eyes.
Vanessa wasn't simply trying to steal Daniel.
She wanted to humiliate him.
She wanted to make our marriage look like a fraud.
And she intended to do it in front of every person we loved.
"Chloe, where are you?""
"In my room.""
"Stay there. Don't speak to Vanessa. Don't delete anything.""
"I have screenshots, Emma.""
My heart started pounding.
"Of what?""
"The group chat. The messages where she planned everything.""
I looked at Detective Miller.
"Can you send them to the police?""
"Yes.""
"Send them now," I told Chloe.
Then she said something else.
"Emma?""
"Yes?""
"There's one more thing.""
"What?""
"Vanessa didn't make the fake email herself.""
I went completely still.
"Who helped her?""
May you like
Chloe's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Someone who works at Daniel's company.""
