Chapter 9: The Trap at the Mansion

The police arrived within twenty minutes.

Two officers examined the package while another spoke with Darius and Margaret.

They advised the family to keep Lily away from the mansion until the threat could be assessed.

Darius agreed.

But the next morning, something unexpected happened.

Vanessa called.

“I want to see Lily.””

Darius stood in Margaret's kitchen.

“No.””

“She deserves an explanation.””

“She deserves peace.””

Vanessa sighed.

“Darius, I know things have gone too far. But I want to make things right.””

He looked at the officers standing near the front window.

“Why now?””

“Because I miss her.””

Darius remained silent.

Vanessa continued.

“I know you think I'm a terrible person. But there are things you don't understand.””

“Then explain them.””

“I can't do that over the phone.””

“Where?””

“At the mansion.””

Darius almost laughed.

“You want me to bring Lily back to the house where you shaved her head?””

“I won't hurt her.””

He closed his eyes.

“You already did.””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Please, Darius. Just come alone. We need to talk.””

He ended the call.

Then he looked at the police officer.

“Can you help me understand why she suddenly wants me back at the mansion?””

The officer nodded.

“We can arrange a controlled meeting, but your daughter should remain here.””

Darius agreed.

He contacted Robert Mitchell and James.

They reviewed the threats, the photographs, and the suspicious financial documents.

Then they decided that any meeting with Vanessa should happen with appropriate safety precautions and law enforcement present.

That afternoon, Darius returned to the mansion.

The front door was unlocked.

Vanessa stood in the living room wearing an elegant cream-colored dress.

She had arranged flowers on the table.

Two cups of coffee sat beside a plate of untouched pastries.

“Darius.””

He didn't sit.

“Where is Victor?””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“I don't know.””

“Where is Adrian?””

She looked toward the window.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Darius placed a photograph on the table.

It showed the three of them outside the restaurant.

Vanessa stared at it.

Then she slowly sat down.

“You've been investigating me.””

“You've been stealing from my daughter.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't want to hurt Lily.””

Darius shook his head.

“You shaved her head. You threatened to send her away. You told her that her mother didn't love her.””

Vanessa lowered her face.

“I was angry.””

“That's not an explanation.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Adrian told me everything would be different once Lily was no longer living with you.””

Darius went completely still.

“What did he promise you?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“He said the trust would become easier to access if Lily was placed under different guardianship arrangements.””

“And you believed him?””

“He said the money would eventually be ours.””

Darius looked at her with disgust.

“So you were willing to make a child believe her father didn't want her just to steal her inheritance?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I thought I could fix everything later.””

“You don't fix this by crying.””

She looked up.

“Darius, I was desperate.””

“For what?””

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she said quietly:

“Adrian threatened me.””

Darius folded his arms.

“Tell me.””

“He said he had information about my past. He said if I didn't help him, he would destroy my reputation and make sure I lost everything.””

“So you helped him take money from Lily?””

“I didn't know how far he would go.””

Darius leaned forward.

“Did you arrange for someone to collect my daughter?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. I swear.””

“Then who sent the package?””

“I don't know.””

Darius studied her face.

For the first time, he saw something that looked less like anger and more like genuine fear.

“Where is Victor?””

Vanessa looked toward the staircase.

“He was here last night.””

Darius immediately straightened.

“Why?””

“He wanted the original trust documents. He said Adrian needed them before tomorrow.””

“Where are they?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“In your study.””

Darius reached for his phone.

Before he could make a call, the lights went out.

The mansion fell silent.

A moment later, a heavy thud came from upstairs.

Vanessa screamed.

Darius turned toward the staircase.

“Stay here!””

He moved toward the hallway.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

“Hello, Darius.””

A man stepped into the light from the emergency hallway lamp.

He was tall, wearing a dark coat.

Darius recognized him immediately from the photographs.

Adrian Moore.

“It's been a long time,” Adrian said.

Darius stood between him and the staircase.

“Get out of my house.””

Adrian smiled.

“Still protective. Just like your wife used to be.””

“Don't mention her.””

Adrian glanced toward Vanessa.

“You've told him everything?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I told him nothing.””

Adrian laughed.

“That's unfortunate.””

He looked at Darius.

“Where is Lily?””

“Nowhere near you.””

Adrian took another step.

“She's my niece.””

“She is not yours to collect.””

Adrian's smile disappeared.

“You have something that belongs to my family.””

“Lily belongs to nobody.””

“Don't pretend to be noble. You married into our family. You don't understand what my father intended.””

Darius stared at him.

“Your father left Lily an inheritance. He didn't leave you permission to terrorize her.””

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“Give me the original documents.””

“No.””

Adrian reached inside his coat.

Darius immediately stepped backward.

A police officer appeared at the far end of the hallway.

“Hands where I can see them!””

Adrian froze.

Another officer entered through the side door.

“Step away from the man!””

Adrian raised his hands.

But before the officers could approach, he looked directly at Vanessa.

“You told him where the documents were?””

Vanessa began trembling.

“I didn't have a choice.””

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“You never have a choice, do you?””

The officers moved forward.

Adrian was detained without incident.

Darius turned toward the study.

The original documents were still inside the locked cabinet.

But something else was missing.

The USB drive containing his first wife's recordings.

He opened the drawer.

Empty.

“Officer!””

The police turned.

“What's wrong?””

Darius pointed to the drawer.

“Someone took the evidence.””

Vanessa suddenly began crying harder.

“Darius, I can explain.””

He looked at her.

“What did you do?””

She shook her head.

“I didn't take it.””

Adrian laughed from the hallway.

“You really think she's the mastermind?””

Darius turned toward him.

“What are you talking about?””

Adrian leaned toward the officer.

Then he looked at Darius.

“Ask your wife why she was so interested in that recording. Ask her what your first wife discovered before she died.””

Vanessa covered her face.

“Stop!””

Adrian smiled.

“Tell him, Vanessa.””

Darius stepped closer.

“Tell me what?””

Vanessa slowly lowered her hands.

Her face was white.

Then she whispered:

“Your first wife didn't die believing she was alone.””

Darius felt the room tilt.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at him through tear-filled eyes.

“She knew someone was planning to hurt her. And she knew exactly who it was.””

Darius grabbed the edge of the table.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked toward Adrian.

Then she said something that made even the police officers exchange glances.

“The person who arranged everything wasn't Victor. It wasn't Adrian.””

She took a shaky breath.

“It was someone your first wife trusted more than anyone.””

Darius stared at her.

“Who?””

Vanessa pointed toward the staircase.

And at that exact moment, Margaret's voice came from the entrance.

“Darius, don't listen to her!””

He turned.

His mother was standing in the doorway.

In her hands was a photograph.

And the person standing beside Darius's late wife in that photograph was someone he had never expected to see.

His own father.
