Chapter 2: Daddy Came Home
Darius Carter knew something was wrong before he even entered the house.
His mother was standing in the hallway with tears running down her cheeks.
His daughter was clinging to her waist.
And Vanessa was standing near the bathroom door, holding a pair of electric clippers.
“What happened?””
His voice was quiet.
Margaret turned around.
“Darius…”
He looked at Lily.
For a second, he didn't recognize what he was seeing.
His little girl had always had beautiful, long hair. Every morning, he brushed it while she sat on the edge of his bed, choosing between ponytails, braids, and colorful ribbons.
Now, one side of her head was almost completely shaved.
The other side was patchy and uneven.
Her tiny tiara lay on the bathroom floor.
“Lily?””
She looked at him.
Her eyes filled immediately.
“Daddy!””
Darius dropped his briefcase.
He crossed the hallway in three strides and lifted her into his arms.
“Baby, what happened to your hair?””
Lily buried her face against his neck.
“I'm sorry, Daddy.””
He pulled back slightly.
“Sorry for what?””
“I was bad.””
Darius looked confused.
“Who told you that?””
Lily glanced toward Vanessa.
That single movement changed his expression.
He turned slowly.
“Vanessa?””
His wife took a breath.
“Before you get upset, let me explain.””
Darius held his daughter closer.
“Why is my child crying?””
“She was disrespectful.””
“She is six.””
“She lied to me about your mother's bracelet.””
Margaret stepped forward.
“The bracelet was behind your drawer, Vanessa. I heard Lily tell you she hadn't touched it.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“This is exactly why nobody can discipline this child. Everyone rushes to defend her.””
Darius stared at the clippers.
“Did you shave her head?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“I gave her a haircut.””
“A haircut?””
“She was out of control. I needed to teach her a lesson.””
Darius looked down at his daughter.
Lily's little fingers were twisting the collar of his shirt.
“Did she ask you to stop?”” he asked.
Vanessa looked away.
“Darius, don't turn this into something it isn't.””
“Did she ask you to stop?””
“She was crying. Children cry.””
Margaret's voice trembled.
“She begged her to stop. I heard her before I reached the bathroom.””
Darius closed his eyes for a moment.
When he opened them, his face was different.
“Vanessa, give me the clippers.””
His wife frowned.
“What?””
“Put them down.””
“They're already down.””
“Then step away from them.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“You're acting like I hurt her.””
Darius looked at the red marks on Lily's scalp.
“You did hurt her.””
He carried Lily into the living room and placed her gently on the sofa.
Margaret sat beside her.
“Stay with Grandma, sweetheart.””
Lily grabbed his wrist.
“Don't leave me.””
Darius bent down and kissed her forehead.
“I'm not going anywhere, princess.””
He took a moment to wipe the tears from her cheeks.
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
“Tell me exactly what happened.””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“I told you. She was disrespectful, and I corrected her.””
“You used electric clippers on a six-year-old because you were angry?””
“She needs discipline.””
“Discipline doesn't mean humiliating a child.””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“You always make me the villain! I live in this house too. I should have some authority.””
Darius shook his head.
“You have authority as an adult. You don't have the right to terrorize my daughter.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“I have sacrificed everything for this family.””
Margaret let out a bitter laugh.
“Everything? What exactly have you sacrificed?””
Vanessa turned toward her.
“Stay out of this!””
Margaret stood.
“I will never stay out of anything that concerns my granddaughter.””
Darius raised one hand.
“Enough.””
He walked toward the kitchen, took out his phone, and called his assistant.
“James, I need you to contact our family attorney. Tell him I need him at the house today.””
Vanessa's expression changed.
“Why are you calling a lawyer?””
“Because I need to understand every option available to protect Lily.””
“Protect her from what? Her own stepmother?””
Darius ended the call.
“From anyone who thinks frightening her is acceptable.””
Vanessa looked at Margaret.
“You've wanted me out of this family since the wedding.””
Margaret didn't answer.
Instead, she took Lily's hand and gently examined her scalp.
“Does anything hurt, sweetheart?””
Lily nodded.
“Here.””
Margaret's face tightened.
Darius came back into the room.
“I'm taking her to the doctor.””
Vanessa scoffed.
“For a haircut?””
Darius didn't look at her.
“For an examination. I want to make sure she hasn't been injured.””
He picked up Lily's purple princess dress where it had become tangled around the chair.
“Let's get you comfortable, baby.””
Lily whispered something into his ear.
“What is it?””
“Will my hair grow back before my birthday?””
Darius swallowed.
He pressed his cheek against hers.
“I don't know, sweetheart. But I promise nobody will ever make you feel ashamed of yourself again.””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“You're making promises you can't keep.””
Darius turned.
“Get your things.””
She blinked.
“What?””
“I want you to stay somewhere else tonight.””
Vanessa's mouth fell open.
“You're throwing me out?””
“I'm asking you to leave while we figure out what happens next.””
“This is my house too!””
Darius looked at her coldly.
“Then you should have remembered that it was also a little girl's home.””
For the first time, Vanessa had nothing to say.
But as Darius carried Lily toward the front door, she suddenly raised her voice.
“You can't just take her away from me!””
Darius stopped.
He turned around.
“She's my daughter.””
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“And I'm your wife. You should remember that before you decide who matters more.””
Margaret looked at her son.
“Darius, there's something else you need to know.””
He frowned.
“What?””
Margaret glanced toward Vanessa.
“I didn't come here only to bring Lily her birthday present.””
Vanessa's face went strangely pale.
Margaret reached into her handbag and pulled out a small envelope.
“I came because I received something in the mail this morning. Something with your wife's name on it.””
Darius stared at the envelope.
“What is it?””
Margaret opened her mouth.
But Vanessa moved first.
May you like
She lunged toward the envelope.
And Darius finally realized that the shaved hair might not be the worst thing his wife had done.
