Chapter 6: The Recording That Changed Everything

“Give me the phone, Vanessa.””

Darius held out his hand.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not until you hear the whole recording.””

“You have no right to use my wife's private messages.””

“Your wife?””

Vanessa laughed.

“You still speak about her like she's alive.””

Darius took a step forward.

“Don't.””

“Don't what? Mention the woman whose photograph is still beside your bed?””

His jaw tightened.

Vanessa looked down at the phone.

“Maybe you should hear what she really thought about being a mother.””

She pressed play again.

The recording crackled.

Then the familiar voice returned.

“Darius, if anything ever happens to me, there's something I need you to know about Lily. She is stronger than you think. And I need you to promise me…”

The audio ended.

Darius stared at the screen.

“That's all?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“That's what I found.””

“Where's the rest?””

“I don't know.””

He reached for the phone.

This time, Vanessa handed it over.

Darius examined the recording.

It was dated three days before his first wife's death.

He knew the original message.

He had listened to it dozens of times after losing her.

But this version was incomplete.

He remembered the rest.

His wife had asked him to promise that he would never let anyone make Lily feel unwanted.

And she had said something else.

Something that had kept him awake for months.

If you ever remarry, choose someone who loves Lily when nobody is watching.

Darius looked at Vanessa.

“You edited this.””

Her expression changed.

“Don't accuse me of something you can't prove.””

“I know this recording. I have the original.””

Vanessa took a step back.

Darius connected the phone to his laptop.

The recording had been copied, renamed, and shortened.

He checked the file information.

It had been modified recently.

“Why did you show this to Lily?””

Vanessa shrugged.

“She asked about her mother.””

“So you played her an edited recording?””

“I was trying to make her understand that life isn't always perfect.””

Darius looked at her in disbelief.

“You told a six-year-old that her dead mother didn't want her?””

“I never said that!””

“Lily told my mother.””

“Children twist words!””

Darius placed the phone on the desk.

“I'm done listening to you blame her.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“You're going to regret treating me like this.””

“Perhaps. But I won't regret protecting my daughter.””

She moved toward the door.

“Then perhaps you should ask your mother what she knows.””

Darius frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Margaret isn't as innocent as she pretends to be.””

He stared at her.

“Explain.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Ask her why she kept certain documents hidden after your first wife's death.””

Before Darius could respond, she walked out.

He stood alone in the study.

For several minutes, he looked at the laptop screen.

Then he called Margaret.

“Mom, I need you to tell me something.””

“What is it?””

“Did you keep any documents from my first wife's estate?””

There was silence.

“Why are you asking me that?””

“Vanessa said you hid something.””

Margaret sighed.

“I didn't want to discuss this over the phone.””

Darius closed his eyes.

“Mom, please.””

“Come to my house. There's something I should have told you years ago.””

An hour later, Darius arrived at Margaret's home.

Lily was asleep upstairs.

Her purple princess dress had been carefully folded beside her bed.

Margaret was waiting in the kitchen with a wooden box.

She placed it on the table.

“Your first wife gave me this shortly before she died.””

Darius looked at the box.

“What's inside?””

“Letters. Medical records. And a document she asked me to keep safe.””

He opened it.

The first item was a handwritten letter.

The paper had yellowed slightly around the edges.

He recognized his wife's handwriting immediately.

*To Margaret,*

*If you're reading this, something has happened to me, and I need you to protect Lily.*

Darius's fingers trembled.

He continued reading.

His wife had written about her fears during the final months of her illness.

She had worried that Darius would eventually remarry and that someone might resent Lily.

She had specifically mentioned the importance of keeping her daughter surrounded by people who loved her.

But the final paragraph made Darius stop.

*There is something else. I discovered that someone close to our family had been accessing documents connected to Lily's inheritance. I confronted the person, but I never got the chance to resolve it. If this happens again, look at the account ending in 4821.*

Darius looked up.

“What account?””

Margaret shook her head.

“I never understood it. I thought it was an old savings account.””

He checked the document.

The account belonged to a trust established for Lily shortly after her birth.

Darius remembered it.

His father had created it to protect Lily's future.

It contained a substantial amount of money.

And according to the most recent statement, a series of withdrawals had been made.

Darius stared at the figures.

“Mom, these withdrawals started two years ago.””

Margaret nodded.

“That was around the time Vanessa began handling some of the household finances.””

Darius felt sick.

He checked the names associated with the account.

One name appeared as an authorized contact.

Vanessa Carter.

But there was something else.

A second name appeared beside hers.

Victor Hayes.

Darius slowly placed the statement on the table.

“Why would Victor have access to Lily's trust?””

Margaret looked frightened.

“I don't know.””

Darius took out his phone and photographed the documents.

Then he called James.

“Stop everything you're doing and listen carefully.””

“Yes, sir.””

“I want a complete investigation into Lily's trust. Every withdrawal, every authorization, every beneficiary change.””

“Understood.””

“And James?””

“Yes?””

“Find out whether Victor Hayes has any connection to my first wife's death.””

There was a long pause.

“Sir, that's a serious question.””

“I know.””

Darius ended the call.

Upstairs, a floorboard creaked.

Lily appeared at the top of the staircase, rubbing her eyes.

“Daddy?””

He immediately put the papers away.

“Hey, princess. Why aren't you sleeping?””

She walked down slowly.

“I had a bad dream.””

He opened his arms.

She climbed into his lap.

“Is Mommy Vanessa coming back?””

Darius looked at Margaret.

Then he gently kissed Lily's forehead.

“Not tonight, sweetheart.””

Lily hesitated.

“Will she cut my hair again?””

“Never.””

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

She rested her head against his chest.

Then, after a moment, she whispered:

“Daddy, there's something I forgot to tell you.””

Darius stroked her back.

“What is it?””

“Before Grandma came, Mommy was talking to someone on the phone.””

“Who?””

Lily looked toward the kitchen door.

“I don't know his name. But she said he was coming to get me.””

Darius stopped moving.

“What else did she say?””

Lily swallowed.

“She said when I was gone, you would finally give her everything.””

Darius looked at Margaret.

The older woman slowly covered her mouth.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from James appeared.

*Sir, we found Victor Hayes. He isn't just connected to Vanessa. He was your first wife's financial adviser before she died. And there's evidence he was involved in the original trust documents.*

Darius read the message twice.

His daughter was asleep against his chest.

His wife's old letter lay open on the kitchen table.

And suddenly, the truth seemed far more dangerous than a stolen fortune.

May you like

Because Victor Hayes had known Lily since she was a baby.

And someone had been preparing to take her away for years.
