Chapter 8: The Brother Nobody Knew About
Darius read the name three times.
*Adrian Moore.*
His first wife's older brother.
He remembered Adrian as a charming, ambitious man who had attended family gatherings before disappearing from their lives shortly after the wedding.
Darius had been told that Adrian moved overseas.
He had never questioned it.
“Mom,” he said slowly, “Adrian is supposed to be in London.””
Margaret shook her head.
“He never stayed there.””
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Your first wife asked me not to. She was frightened of him.””
Darius looked back at the letter.
His hands trembled as he continued reading.
His late wife explained that Adrian had developed an unhealthy obsession with the family inheritance.
He believed he deserved a share of the money their father had left behind.
When his sister married Darius, Adrian became increasingly hostile.
He began questioning her decisions and demanding access to financial documents.
Eventually, she discovered that he had been trying to manipulate the family trust.
She confronted him.
He denied everything.
But she had evidence.
And she had hidden it.
Darius stopped reading.
“Where is the evidence?””
Margaret pointed toward the envelope.
“Your wife said there was a second location.””
Darius continued.
*If Adrian ever contacts Lily or attempts to influence her future, please understand that he is not acting out of love. He wants access to the trust, and he believes Lily is the only person standing between him and the money.*
Darius looked up.
“So Vanessa was working with Adrian?””
Margaret nodded.
“I believe so.””
Darius stood and walked toward the window.
The pieces were beginning to fit together.
Vanessa had been transferring money.
Victor had been preparing documents.
Someone had been collecting information about Lily.
And now Adrian had apparently returned.
His phone vibrated.
A message from an unfamiliar number appeared.
*You should stop looking into the past. Your daughter is safer if you cooperate.*
Darius showed it to James.
“Can you trace this?””
“We'll preserve it and pass it to the authorities.””
Darius typed a response.
*Who is this?*
The reply arrived almost immediately.
*Someone who knows what happened to Lily's mother.*
Darius felt a chill.
He called the police and explained the threats, the suspected financial fraud, and the attempted removal of his daughter.
The officer advised him to preserve all communications and arrange immediate protection while the matter was investigated.
By midnight, Darius had made arrangements for Lily to stay with Margaret temporarily.
The following morning, he visited the family attorney.
Attorney Robert Mitchell examined the documents for nearly an hour.
When he finally looked up, his expression was grave.
“Darius, there are grounds to investigate the financial activity and the apparent attempts to interfere with your daughter's guardianship.””
“Can we stop them from contacting her?””
“We can seek appropriate protective measures. We should also make sure her school has clear written instructions about authorized pickup.””
Darius nodded.
“Do it.””
Robert looked at the trust documents.
“There's something else. Your first wife's letter refers to a separate beneficiary agreement. If that agreement exists, it could explain why Adrian is so determined to gain access to Lily.””
Darius frowned.
“What kind of agreement?””
Robert turned a page.
“Your wife may have established Lily as the sole beneficiary of a protected family fund, with specific restrictions on early withdrawals.””
Darius leaned forward.
“So the money belongs to Lily?””
“That's what the documents indicate. We need to review the original agreement.””
He pointed to a handwritten note.
“There's a reference to a safety deposit box at First National Bank.””
Darius remembered the bank.
His father had used it for years.
“Can we access it?””
“Not without confirming the ownership and authorization.””
Darius signed the necessary paperwork.
That afternoon, he and James visited the bank.
After several identity checks and legal confirmations, a bank officer brought out a small metal box.
Darius opened it.
Inside were photographs, financial statements, and a sealed USB drive.
There was also a handwritten note.
*If Adrian has returned, don't trust anyone who claims to be protecting Lily.*
Darius looked at James.
“Take photographs of everything.””
James carefully examined the documents.
One photograph showed Adrian standing beside Vanessa.
Another showed Victor.
The three of them were together outside a restaurant.
The date was almost three years earlier.
Darius's stomach tightened.
He had been told Vanessa met Victor through a business event.
But this photograph suggested the connection had existed long before that.
Then James found a small audio recorder.
“Sir, there's a label.””
Darius looked.
It read:
*THE NIGHT ADRIAN THREATENED ME.*
His throat went dry.
He pressed play.
At first, there was static.
Then a woman's voice.
His wife's voice.
“Adrian, you cannot keep asking me for money.””
A man's voice answered.
“You owe me. Everything you have came from this family.””
“I won't give you Lily's inheritance.””
A sharp sound followed.
Then Adrian spoke again.
“If you won't give me what I deserve, I'll make sure nobody gets anything.””
The recording ended.
Darius stood frozen.
His wife had known.
She had been trying to protect Lily.
And the man who had threatened her was now working with Vanessa.
Suddenly, Darius understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to remove Lily.
It wasn't simply jealousy.
It was about money.
And possibly something much worse.
His phone rang.
Margaret.
He answered immediately.
“Mom?””
Her voice was panicked.
“Darius, you need to come home.””
“What happened?””
“Lily received a package.””
“What package?””
“A small box. It was delivered to the house.””
Darius's heartbeat quickened.
“Don't open it.””
“I haven't.””
“Where is Lily?””
“She's with me. She's frightened.””
“I'm coming.””
When he arrived, the package was sitting on the kitchen table.
It was wrapped in purple paper.
There was no return address.
Only Lily's name.
Darius put on gloves and carefully opened it.
Inside was a tiny silver tiara.
Lily's original tiara.
The one Vanessa had knocked onto the bathroom floor.
But beneath it was a folded photograph.
Darius opened it.
The picture showed Lily standing outside her school.
Someone had taken it from across the street.
On the back, a message had been written.
*A princess needs her real family. Tomorrow, we'll come to collect her.*
Margaret gasped.
Darius immediately called the police.
Then he looked at Lily.
She was standing at the kitchen doorway.
Her little hands were trembling.
“Daddy?””
He knelt.
“I'm here, princess.””
Lily pointed toward the photograph.
“That's the man Mommy Vanessa talked to.””
Darius looked at her.
“Are you sure?””
Lily nodded.
“He came to the house before. He gave Mommy a present. She told me not to tell you.””
Darius turned the photograph over again.
At the bottom corner, almost hidden by the fold, was a handwritten initial.
*A.*
Adrian.
May you like
And now there was no doubt.
Someone was watching his daughter.
