Chapter 3: The Question That Made Her Tremble
“Don't touch that!””
Vanessa's scream echoed through the living room.
Margaret pulled the envelope against her chest.
Darius immediately stepped between the two women.
“Vanessa, back away.””
His wife stopped.
Her breathing was quick, and her eyes were fixed on the envelope.
“What did you tell him?”” she demanded.
Margaret looked at Darius.
“Two weeks ago, I received a letter from someone who works at your company's accounting office. They said I should look into some payments being made from your family accounts.””
Darius frowned.
“What payments?””
Margaret removed several printed pages.
“I didn't understand all of it. But I recognized your signature on some of the documents.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“This is ridiculous.””
Darius took the papers.
The first page showed a series of transfers.
His eyes moved down the list.
One payment.
Another.
Then another.
All sent to a company he didn't recognize.
“What's this company?”” he asked.
Vanessa forced a smile.
“Probably one of your business vendors.””
“I've never heard of it.””
“You have hundreds of vendors.””
Darius examined the dates.
The transfers had started six months earlier.
“Why are these coming from our personal account?””
Vanessa shrugged.
“Ask your accountant.””
Margaret spoke quietly.
“That's what I thought. So I asked someone to look into the company.””
Darius lifted his eyes.
“And?””
Margaret swallowed.
“The company is registered to someone named Victor Hayes.””
Vanessa's face lost its color.
Darius noticed.
“Do you know him?””
“No.””
“You reacted when you heard his name.””
“I didn't.””
Darius looked at the documents again.
A familiar address appeared at the bottom.
He recognized it immediately.
It belonged to an apartment building near downtown.
He had driven past it several times.
“Vanessa,” he said slowly, “why is our money going to a company registered at this address?””
She folded her arms.
“You're interrogating me in front of your mother?””
“Answer the question.””
“I don't have to.””
Darius stared at her for several seconds.
Then his phone rang.
It was James, his assistant.
“Mr. Carter, I spoke with your attorney. He can be there in forty minutes.””
“Good. I also need you to contact our accountant and freeze any questionable transfers until we understand what's happening.””
“Understood, sir.””
Darius ended the call.
Vanessa took a step toward him.
“You're destroying our marriage over a misunderstanding.””
Darius looked at Lily.
She was sitting beside Margaret, quietly holding the little silver tiara in both hands.
“No,” he said.
“You started destroying this family when you decided my daughter was someone you could punish whenever you felt angry.””
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
“She's not your only responsibility anymore.””
Darius stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she gave a small, bitter laugh.
“You think everything is about Lily. You don't even notice what's happening in your own house.””
Darius didn't answer.
He was tired of arguments.
He wanted his daughter examined, comforted, and safe.
He turned to Margaret.
“Take Lily upstairs and help her change. I'll arrange a doctor's appointment.””
Margaret nodded.
She lifted Lily into her arms.
As they passed Vanessa, Lily turned her face away.
That small movement seemed to anger Vanessa more than anything else.
“See?”” she said.
“You're teaching her to hate me.””
Margaret stopped.
“No, Vanessa. Your actions are doing that.””
She carried Lily upstairs.
Darius waited until they disappeared before speaking.
“Sit down.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Excuse me?””
“I said sit down.””
Something in his voice made her hesitate.
She lowered herself onto the sofa.
Darius picked up the clippers from the coffee table.
Vanessa stared at them.
“What are you doing?””
He examined the device.
A few strands of Lily's hair were caught between the blades.
He switched it on.
The buzzing sound filled the room.
Vanessa immediately stood.
“Turn that off.””
Darius looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because it's making me uncomfortable.””
He switched it off.
Then he placed the clippers on the table.
“You didn't seem uncomfortable when Lily was begging you to stop.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“Don't compare me to a child.””
“Why not? You were willing to use something frightening against her when she couldn't defend herself.””
He stepped closer.
“Now I want you to imagine something.””
Vanessa backed away.
“Darius, stop.””
He picked up the clippers again.
“Imagine someone you trusted holding these against your head while you cried and begged them to stop.””
Her eyes widened.
“What are you saying?””
He looked directly into her face.
“Would you still call it discipline?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Put those down.””
Darius switched the clippers on for one second.
The familiar electric buzz made her flinch.
Then he switched them off.
He never touched her.
But his next question made her blood run cold.
“Vanessa, if Lily had been your biological daughter, would you still have shaved her head?””
Vanessa stared at him.
Her lips parted.
No answer came.
Darius lowered the clippers.
“That's what I thought.””
“You're threatening me!””
“No. I'm asking you to hear yourself.””
He placed the device back on the table.
Then he picked up the envelope and examined the final page.
There was a photograph attached.
It showed Vanessa standing outside the downtown apartment building.
Beside her was a man Darius had never met.
The date was printed underneath.
Six days earlier.
Darius looked at the photograph.
Then he looked at his wife.
“Who is Victor Hayes?””
Vanessa's hands began trembling.
“He's nobody.””
“Nobody?””
“Someone I know.””
“Why is he receiving money from our accounts?””
She swallowed.
“I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
Before she could speak, footsteps sounded on the stairs.
Margaret returned with Lily, who was now wearing a soft pink sweater and comfortable trousers.
The little girl's head was covered with a small knitted hat.
Darius immediately put the photograph away.
“Are you ready, princess?””
Lily nodded.
He held out his hand.
She took it.
But as they approached the front door, Lily suddenly stopped.
“Daddy?””
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Can I tell you something?””
Darius crouched.
“Anything.””
Lily looked toward Vanessa.
Then she whispered:
“Mommy said if I told you what happened before today, she would make sure Grandma never visited me again.””
Darius felt his stomach tighten.
“What happened before today?””
Lily's little fingers clutched his hand.
“She said she was going to send me away.””
Margaret gasped.
Vanessa went completely still.
Darius gently brushed a tear from Lily's cheek.
“Send you where, baby?””
Lily looked at the floor.
Then she said six words that made the room go silent.
“She said Daddy wasn't my real family.””
Darius slowly turned toward his wife.
And for the first time since returning home, Vanessa looked genuinely terrified.
May you like
Because the little girl had just revealed something that could destroy the entire story Vanessa had been telling him.
And Darius was finally ready to hear every word.
