Chapter 8: The Boy Who Knew Too Much
Brandon Carter had been four years old when his father died.
Michael remembered the funeral. He remembered Vanessa standing in the front row, clutching Brandon's hand, her face pale beneath a black veil.
He remembered promising his father that he would look after the family.
At the time, it had seemed like the right thing to do.
Now he wondered whether that promise had been the first step in a plan designed long before Sarah became ill.
The bank transfer in Thomas's envelope showed that Michael's father had deposited $150,000 into a custodial account for Brandon. Additional transfers followed over the next four years.
The total exceeded $400,000.
The money had come from a private investment company that had also transferred funds into Vanessa's accounts.
Rachel placed the documents across her desk.
"We need to be careful," she said.
"An account established for Brandon isn't automatically evidence of wrongdoing. Your father may have intended to provide for him.""
"Then why hide it?""
"That's what we need to determine.""
Michael stared at the dates.
Several transfers had occurred while Sarah was alive. Others had occurred after his father's death, when Michael had taken over the family company.
He had never authorized them.
"Someone was using my name.""
Rachel nodded.
"Possibly. We need the original banking records, not just copies. And we need to know who controlled the accounts.""
Michael's phone rang.
Emily.
He answered immediately.
"Is Lily okay?""
"She's fine. She's watching a movie with me."" Emily paused.
"Michael, Brandon called.""
Michael stood.
"What did he want?""
"He asked whether Lily was going to live with you permanently.""
"Why?""
"He said his mother told him Lily would be taken away if the court discovered what happened with the money.""
Michael closed his eyes.
"Did he say anything else?""
Emily hesitated.
"He asked if I knew about a blue folder.""
Michael looked at Rachel.
"What blue folder?""
"I don't know. He wouldn't explain. He said his mother keeps it in her bedroom, and that it has something to do with your father.""
Michael's mind raced.
"Did he say why he called you?""
"He said he wanted to talk to Lily.""
"No.""
"Michael, I told him Lily wasn't ready to speak with him. He started crying.""
Michael stopped pacing.
Brandon was twelve. He had been raised by Vanessa, and he might have witnessed things he didn't understand. He might also have been coached, manipulated, or used as part of the scheme.
But he was still a child.
"Tell him I'm willing to speak with him," Michael said.
"With Rachel present.""
Rachel nodded.
"That may be useful, provided we don't pressure him or promise him anything in exchange for information.""
They arranged to meet Brandon at a neutral location the following afternoon.
But before the meeting, Michael returned to the house with a police officer and a court-approved investigator to retrieve Lily's belongings and secure the documents still inside Vanessa's office.
Vanessa was waiting in the foyer.
She wore a silk blouse and dark trousers. Her face was composed, but her eyes were swollen.
"You brought the police into my home?""
"It's my home," Michael replied.
"And we're retrieving Lily's things.""
"You're humiliating me in front of everyone.""
"You did that yourself.""
The officer instructed Vanessa to remain away from the office while the investigator documented the contents.
She followed Michael down the hallway anyway.
"You think Thomas is telling the truth?"" she demanded.
"That bitter old man has hated your father for years.""
"Thomas has records.""
"Copies of records. Anyone can manufacture copies.""
"Then you'll welcome an independent investigation.""
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
"You have no idea what your father did to keep this family together.""
Michael stopped walking.
"What did he do?""
She seemed to realize she'd said too much.
"Nothing you need to know.""
"Did he give Brandon $400,000?""
Vanessa went completely still.
The officer looked up.
Michael watched her face.
"How did you know about that?"" she whispered.
"So it's true.""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Your father wanted Brandon to have a future. He knew you would inherit the company. He knew Lily would inherit Sarah's money. Brandon was the only person who had nothing.""
"Then why didn't you tell me about the account?""
"Because you would have taken it away.""
"Why would I take away money that was legally Brandon's?""
Vanessa stared at him.
For a moment, she looked almost frightened.
Then her expression hardened.
"Because your father told me you would never allow Brandon to receive what he deserved.""
Michael felt a chill.
"My father said that?""
"He said you were selfish. He said you would always choose Sarah's family over his.""
"Brandon is my father's family.""
"Not the way you mean it.""
Vanessa turned and walked away.
The investigator emerged from the office twenty minutes later carrying a sealed box.
Inside were additional financial records, two old phones, and a blue folder.
Michael opened the folder under the investigator's supervision.
The first document was a copy of Brandon's custodial account.
The second was a handwritten note from Michael's father.
Vanessa, the account is for Brandon. Keep it separate from the family business. Michael must never know about the transfers until the ownership dispute is settled.
Michael's hands trembled.
The note was dated seven months before his father's death.
A third document was a draft agreement naming Vanessa as the person responsible for managing Brandon's funds.
The signature at the bottom appeared to be his father's.
But the signature was not the only thing that caught Michael's attention.
The agreement stated that the account was to be funded through "future distributions from the Carter family trust.""
That trust had been established by Michael's grandfather.
It was not his father's personal property to distribute freely.
Rachel examined the page.
"If these records are authentic, we need to determine whether the transfers were authorized by the trust's governing documents.""
Michael looked at Vanessa.
"Did you know the money came from the family trust?""
She didn't answer.
"Vanessa?""
Her face crumpled, but no tears fell.
"Your father told me everything was arranged.""
"Did you know?""
"I knew Brandon needed security.""
"That's not what I asked.""
She looked directly at him.
"Yes.""
The admission was quiet, almost defeated.
Michael felt anger rise again.
"You knew the money might not belong to him.""
"I knew your father had made promises.""
"And you decided Lily should pay for them?""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"Your daughter has more money than she will ever need!""
"That doesn't make it yours.""
She stepped backward.
"You don't understand. Your father promised me that Brandon would never be left behind. When he died, the company started questioning the transfers.
Daniel said the accounts could be challenged. He said we needed another source of security.""
"So you chose Lily.""
"I chose my son.""
Michael stared at her.
"And you used my daughter to do it.""
Vanessa looked away.
The investigator sealed the documents.
"Mr. Carter, we need to leave these materials untouched for the forensic review.""
Michael nodded.
As they walked toward the front door, Vanessa spoke again.
"Brandon doesn't know anything about the money.""
Michael turned.
"Then why did he call Emily about the blue folder?""
Vanessa's face changed.
"He shouldn't have done that.""
"Why?""
She shook her head.
"He's a child. He doesn't understand.""
Michael studied her.
"You keep saying that whenever a child tells the truth.""
Vanessa didn't respond.
At the neutral meeting the following afternoon, Brandon arrived with a social worker and Rachel.
He wore a gray hoodie and kept his hands buried in the pockets. He looked smaller than Michael remembered, his usual arrogance replaced by a nervous, restless energy.
Michael sat across from him.
"You asked to talk to me.""
Brandon nodded.
"Mom said you were going to take Lily's money and give it to yourself.""
Michael leaned forward.
"No. I want to protect Lily's money from anyone who tries to take it.""
Brandon stared at the table.
"Mom said you hate me.""
"I don't hate you.""
"She said your dad never wanted me to have anything.""
Michael thought of the handwritten note.
"Your grandfather left money for you. We're investigating where it came from and whether it was handled properly. That doesn't mean you're in trouble.""
Brandon's eyes lifted.
"Are you going to take it away?""
"I don't know what the investigation will find. But you didn't create those accounts. Adults are responsible for the decisions they made.""
Brandon rubbed his face with his sleeve.
"Mom said if I told anyone about the folder, we'd lose everything.""
"What did you see in the folder?""
Brandon swallowed.
"She showed me papers with Lily's name. She said if Lily signed them, the bank would let her move the money.""
Michael remained still.
"Did you see Lily sign anything?""
"Yes.""
"When?""
"At home. Mom told me to stay upstairs, but I came down because I wanted my charger.""
Brandon looked at Rachel, then back at Michael.
"Mr. Daniel was there. He put a paper in front of Lily. She was crying, and Mom kept telling her to write your name.""
Michael's hands curled beneath the table.
"What did Daniel do?""
"He took pictures. Then he told Mom the handwriting was good enough.""
Rachel asked gently, "Did you hear what the document was for?""
Brandon nodded.
"Mom said it would prove Dad had promised me the money.""
Michael frowned.
"Your father?""
Brandon shook his head.
"No. Your dad. Grandpa.""
The room went silent.
Brandon reached into his pocket and pulled out a small flash drive.
"I took this from Mom's desk. I didn't know what it was. But when she found out it was missing, she started screaming.""
Rachel accepted the drive and placed it in an evidence envelope.
"Thank you for telling us. We'll have it examined properly.""
Brandon's eyes filled with tears.
"Is Mom going to prison?""
No one answered immediately.
Finally, Michael said, "I don't know. That's for the authorities and the court to determine.""
Brandon stared at him.
"Will Lily hate me?""
Michael felt something inside him soften.
"Lily is hurt and frightened. She needs time. But you didn't make these decisions, Brandon.""
Brandon began to cry.
"I told her she was a dog. Mom said it was funny.""
Michael looked away for a moment.
"That was cruel. You need to understand that. But you can choose what kind of person you become from now on.""
Brandon nodded, wiping his face.
Then he looked up.
"There's one more thing.""
Michael waited.
"Mom said Grandma Sarah had another letter. She said it was hidden where nobody would look because everyone thought it was already gone.""
Michael leaned forward.
"Where?""
Brandon hesitated.
"At Grandpa's old house.""
Michael's heart began to pound.
The old family house had been sold after his father's death. Most of its contents had been auctioned, and the property had changed owners twice.
"What makes you think the letter is there?""
"Because Mom went there last week. She came back with a box and told Daniel she had found what they needed.""
Rachel immediately called the investigator.
But Brandon wasn't finished.
He reached into his pocket again and removed a folded scrap of paper.
"I found this in the blue folder.""
Michael unfolded it.
It was a handwritten note, apparently from Sarah to Thomas.
The original will is not the only document they changed. If they find the letter at the old house, they will know I discovered the truth about the first beneficiary.
Michael stared at the words.
"The first beneficiary," he whispered.
Brandon nodded.
"Mom said if that letter ever got out, everything would fall apart.""
Rachel looked at Michael.
"We need to find that house and secure any remaining documents immediately.""
Michael folded the note carefully.
For the first time, he understood that Vanessa's attempt to steal Lily's money might have been only one part of a much larger scheme.
Someone had altered documents before Sarah died.
Someone had redirected money after Michael's father died.
And someone had been trying to control what Lily would inherit since before she could even read.
Now the missing letter might finally reveal who had been pulling the strings.
But as Michael rose to leave, Brandon grabbed his sleeve.
"Mr. Carter?""
Michael turned.
Brandon's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Mom told Daniel that if the first beneficiary was ever identified, they would have to make sure he never got the money.""
Michael looked at Rachel.
Then he asked Brandon the question that made the boy go completely pale.
"Who is the first beneficiary?""
Brandon shook his head.
"I don't know.""
He swallowed hard.
"But I heard Mom say one name.""
Michael waited.
May you like
Brandon looked toward the door.
"Your name.""
