Chapter 5: The Woman Who Wanted My Daughter

The emergency hearing was scheduled for the following morning.

By noon, Michael had retained an independent attorney named Rachel Bennett, a sharp-eyed former prosecutor who specialized in financial exploitation and contested guardianship cases.

Rachel read Vanessa's petition in silence.

When she reached the attached witness statements, she placed the papers on her desk and removed her glasses.

"Your stepmother is trying to accomplish two things," she said.

"First, she wants control over the narrative. Second, she wants access to your daughter's financial affairs by portraying you as unstable.""

"Can she get temporary custody of Lily?""

"Not simply because she filed a petition. But we need evidence that directly addresses her claims.""

Michael leaned forward.

"She has been starving my daughter.""

"Then we need records, photographs, medical documentation if appropriate, and a careful account of what Lily experienced. We also need to show that you've taken immediate steps to protect her.""

"She forged my signature.""

"Good. That gives us a financial fraud investigation separate from the family proceeding.""

Rachel opened her laptop.

"Did your stepmother have legal guardianship?""

"No. She was helping me with childcare.""

"Then why is she claiming authority over Lily's trust?""

"Because I trusted her.""

Rachel held his gaze.

"Trust is not a legal instrument, Mr. Carter. From this point forward, everything must be documented.""

Michael nodded.

Rachel reviewed the bank records, Sarah's letter, and the signature-practice notebook.

Then she stopped at the copy of Emily's statement.

"This is troubling.""

"Emily says the additional paragraph was added after she signed it.""

"That may be true. But we need the original and evidence of when the alteration occurred.""

"Can you get it?""

"We'll request it formally. And we'll challenge the authenticity of every document submitted by Vanessa or Daniel.""

Michael rubbed his forehead.

"What about Sarah's will?""

Rachel looked up.

"Why are you asking about the original will?""

"Sarah's letter says to ask Daniel what happened to it.""

Rachel's expression sharpened.

"Did you receive a copy after her death?""

"Yes. Daniel told me it was the final version.""

"Do you know where the original is?""

"No.""

Rachel made a note.

"Then that's our next priority.""

Before leaving her office, Michael called Emily.

She answered immediately.

"How's Lily?""

"She's safe with me. Michael, I need to tell you something.""

He stepped into the hallway.

"What?""

"Vanessa called me last night.""

"What did she say?""

"She told me that if I testified against her, she'd make sure I lost everything.""

Michael's jaw tightened.

"Did she threaten Lily?""

"Not directly. She said I'd regret choosing your side.""

"Did you record the call?""

"No.""

"Write down everything you remember. Every word you can.""

Emily went quiet.

"Michael, there's something else. Vanessa said Daniel has the original will, and that the will isn't what you think it is.""

Michael closed his eyes.

"What does that mean?""

"I don't know. She said Sarah changed it before she died, and that you were never supposed to be the sole person responsible for Lily's money.""

"Why didn't you tell me this earlier?""

"Because I thought she was trying to frighten me. Now I don't know what to believe.""

Michael returned to Rachel's office and repeated the conversation.

Rachel immediately called her investigator.

"Find out whether a probate filing exists under Sarah Carter's name. Get the docket, every will filed, and any petition concerning the trust.""

Then she turned to Michael.

"Don't contact Daniel directly again. If he has evidence, we want it preserved. If he has been involved in wrongdoing, we don't want to give him time to destroy anything.""

Michael agreed.

But that afternoon, Daniel called him.

"I heard Vanessa filed an emergency petition," the attorney said.

"How did you hear that?""

"I'm still involved in the estate administration.""

"Not anymore. Rachel Bennett represents me now.""

Daniel sighed.

"Michael, this is a mistake. You're allowing grief and anger to cloud your judgment.""

"My daughter was forced to practice my signature.""

"I've seen the documents. The signatures are questionable, but we don't know who prepared them.""

"Vanessa had the practice sheets in her office.""

"That doesn't establish that she submitted the forms.""

"She admitted she was doing what was necessary.""

"Then let the court determine what that means.""

Michael's grip tightened around the phone.

"Where is Sarah's original will?""

A pause.

"Why are you asking about that?""

"Because Sarah told me to ask you.""

Daniel exhaled.

"I have no idea what you're referring to.""

"Did you meet Emily after Sarah died?""

"Yes.""

"Did you ask her to sign a statement about Sarah's intentions?""

"I asked several family members to provide information during the estate review.""

"Did you add a paragraph saying Lily shouldn't receive more than $25,000 before she turns twenty-one?""

"No.""

"Did you receive $25,000 from Vanessa?""

Another pause.

"Michael, I won't discuss confidential financial records over the phone.""

"Then we'll discuss them under oath.""

Daniel's voice hardened.

"You need to be careful. Your stepmother has evidence that could seriously damage your position in the guardianship dispute.""

"What evidence?""

"I can't tell you.""

"Because it doesn't exist?""

"Because you are no longer my client.""

Daniel ended the call.

Michael immediately informed Rachel.

She didn't look surprised.

"He's protecting himself," she said.

"That doesn't prove guilt, but it tells us we should move quickly.""

At 4:30 p.m., Rachel received a call from the bank's fraud investigator.

The investigator had found that the $75,000 request originated from a device previously used to access Vanessa's household email account. The attached documents included the questionable trust amendment, a copy of Michael's driver's license, and the purported notarized affidavit.

There was also an electronic signature certification.

The certification claimed that Michael had personally approved the document through a secure verification process.

But the phone number used for verification belonged to a prepaid device activated six weeks earlier.

Michael had never owned it.

Rachel asked the investigator to preserve the records for law enforcement.

Then she looked at him.

"This is strong evidence that someone impersonated you. But we still need to determine who controlled that device and who prepared the documents.""

"Can we stop Vanessa's petition?""

"We can challenge it. The hearing is tomorrow, and the judge will decide whether any temporary restrictions are necessary.""

That evening, Michael returned to Emily's house to see Lily.

He found his daughter sitting on the living-room floor, arranging colored pencils in a neat row.

She had drawn a house with three people standing outside.

One figure wore a blue dress.

Another wore a black suit.

The third was a little girl holding a red balloon.

Michael sat beside her.

"That's a beautiful picture.""

Lily smiled faintly.

"That's Mommy's house.""

"Who's the man?""

She pointed to the figure in the black suit.

"Grandma says he's the man who knows all the secrets.""

Michael felt his skin prickle.

"Who told you that?""

"Grandma. She said Mr. Daniel knows how to make people believe anything.""

Michael kept his voice calm.

"Did you ever meet Daniel at Grandma's house?""

Lily nodded.

"He came one night when you were away.""

"When?""

"Before my birthday. Grandma made me wear my yellow dress.""

"What happened?""

"She told me to sit at the table and write your name.""

Michael's stomach turned.

"Was Daniel there?""

"Yes. He watched me.""

"What did he say?""

Lily frowned, trying to remember.

"He said I was getting better. Then he asked Grandma if I could do it on the real paper.""

Michael stared at his daughter.

"Did she let you?""

Lily nodded slowly.

"She made me sign a paper. Then Mr. Daniel took a picture of it.""

Michael reached for her hand.

"Did he tell you why?""

"He said it was important for the bank.""

The room seemed to grow smaller.

Daniel hadn't merely known about the signature practice.

According to Lily, he had watched it happen.

Michael thanked his daughter for telling him, then called Rachel. She arranged for a trained child interviewer to speak with Lily, making clear that nobody should pressure her or repeatedly question her about the events.

At eight that night, Emily received an email.

It contained a scanned copy of the same document Lily had described.

The heading read:

*Affidavit of Intent and Authorization.*

The document claimed that Michael had personally authorized Vanessa to manage Lily's inheritance.

At the bottom was Michael's signature.

Beside it was a second signature.

Sarah Carter.

And beneath both signatures was a witness certification bearing Daniel Reeves's name.

Michael stared at the scan.

"That's the document Lily saw.""

Rachel zoomed in on the signature.

"The formatting is unusual," she said.

"But we'll need the original to determine whether the signatures were copied or traced.""

Emily pointed to the date.

"Michael, look.""

The affidavit was dated two days before Sarah died.

But Sarah had been in the hospital, heavily medicated, and unable to sign legal documents without assistance for more than a week before that date.

Rachel made a note.

"This needs to be verified through her medical records and the notary's records. We cannot assume the document is fraudulent solely from the date, but the circumstances are serious.""

Michael looked at the witness certification.

"Daniel signed this.""

"Apparently," Rachel replied.

"And tomorrow, we will ask the court to preserve the original and prevent anyone from using it to obtain control over Lily's assets.""

Michael's phone rang.

It was Emily.

She was standing in the kitchen, staring at something on her laptop.

"Michael," she whispered, "you need to come here.""

He hurried downstairs.

Emily turned the screen toward him.

An email from Vanessa had arrived only minutes earlier.

The subject line read:

*Tomorrow's hearing — the truth about Michael Carter.*

The message contained a short statement claiming Michael had repeatedly left Lily unattended, neglected her medical needs, and threatened Vanessa when she attempted to protect the child.

Attached was a photograph of Lily sitting alone in a dark room.

Michael recognized the room immediately.

It was Vanessa's office.

And on the desk beside Lily was a stack of papers bearing his signature.

Emily covered her mouth.

"She staged this.""

Michael stared at the photograph.

Then he noticed something in the corner.

A small digital clock.

The time displayed was 8:43 p.m.

The date stamp on the image showed it had been taken three days earlier.

Three days earlier, Michael had been in Chicago.

He had not been home.

Someone had placed Lily in that room, surrounded her with forged documents, and taken a photograph designed to make him look guilty.

Rachel studied the image.

"We'll authenticate it and demand the original file. Don't post it, don't forward it unnecessarily, and don't confront Vanessa about it.""

Michael nodded.

Then another message arrived.

This one came from an unknown number.

*If you want to know who really signed Sarah's last will, ask why Daniel Reeves was paid $25,000 the day after she died.*

A second message followed.

*And ask why the original will names a guardian you never approved.*

Michael looked at Rachel.

"Can they appoint someone else as Lily's guardian without my consent?""

"Not simply by naming them in a will," Rachel said.

"The court considers the child's best interests and the applicable law. But the document could still matter.""

Michael looked down at the photograph of Lily in Vanessa's office.

Tomorrow, he would stand before a judge while his stepmother tried to portray him as an unfit father.

And somewhere, Daniel Reeves was holding the original will.

A will that might explain why everyone seemed so desperate to control his daughter.
