Chapter 4: The Name on the Missing Page
Michael read his sister's name until the letters seemed to blur.
Emily Carter.
His sister. The woman who had opened her home to Lily without asking a single question. The woman who had promised to protect his daughter while he investigated Vanessa. The woman who had cried when she heard what had happened to Sarah.
Her name was on his dead wife's final warning.
"Daddy?""
Lily's small voice pulled him back to the room.
He folded the photograph and slipped it into his pocket.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
"Are you mad?""
Michael looked down at her.
"No, baby. Why would you think that?""
"Because your face looks like it did when Grandma broke Mommy's picture.""
He stared at her.
"When did she break Mommy's picture?""
Lily immediately pressed her lips together.
Michael softened his voice.
"You can tell me. You haven't done anything wrong.""
"She said Mommy was a liar. Then she threw the picture on the floor."" Lily rubbed her thumb against the seam of his shirt.
"I tried to pick it up, but Grandma said I wasn't allowed to touch things that belonged to dead people.""
Michael felt a familiar, burning anger rise in his chest.
"Where was the picture?""
"In the hallway. The one with Mommy wearing her blue dress.""
He knew exactly which picture Lily meant. Sarah had worn that dress at their tenth anniversary dinner. The photograph had been one of Lily's favorites because her mother was laughing in it.
"Did the picture break?""
"Just the glass.""
Michael kissed Lily's forehead.
"I'll find it.""
Emily stood in the doorway, holding a mug of tea. Her eyes moved between Michael's face and the letter in his hand.
"Is something wrong?""
Michael studied her.
For the first time in his life, he noticed how easily his sister could make herself look concerned. The slightly tilted head. The softened voice. The way she approached him with her hands visible, as though she wanted him to know she had nothing to hide.
He hated himself for noticing.
"Emily, I need to ask you something.""
She set the mug down.
"Of course.""
"Did you ever discuss Lily's inheritance with Sarah?""
Emily blinked.
"Why are you asking me that?""
"Just answer the question.""
"She mentioned it once or twice. She wanted to make sure Lily would be taken care of if anything happened to her.""
"Did Sarah ever ask you to sign anything?""
Emily's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Michael saw it.
"No," she answered.
"Why would I sign something about Lily's money?""
He placed the photograph on the coffee table.
Emily looked down.
The color drained from her face.
"Where did you get that?""
"Sarah's letter.""
Emily didn't touch it.
"Michael, I can explain.""
His stomach tightened.
"Explain what?""
She pulled a chair toward the sofa and sat down.
"That photograph was taken after Sarah died. Daniel called me and asked me to meet him at the courthouse. He said there was a problem with the estate paperwork.""
"What problem?""
"He wouldn't explain over the phone.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because he asked me not to. He said he needed to protect the integrity of the investigation.""
Michael laughed once, without humor.
"Daniel told Sarah to trust him, too.""
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"I didn't know he was involved in anything bad.""
"Did you sign something?""
She looked away.
"Emily.""
"Yes.""
The word was barely audible.
Michael stood.
"What did you sign?""
"A statement.""
"What kind of statement?""
"That Sarah had told me she wanted Vanessa to help manage Lily's inheritance.""
The room went silent.
Michael stared at his sister.
"Did Sarah tell you that?""
Emily's shoulders began to shake.
"She said Vanessa could help with everyday things. She never said Vanessa should control the trust.""
"Then why did you sign it?""
"Daniel told me it was only to establish what Sarah had intended. He said it wouldn't give Vanessa access to the money.""
Michael walked to the window.
Outside, the morning sun illuminated the wet pavement. Somewhere down the street, a lawn mower started. Ordinary sounds. An ordinary morning.
His family had become a room full of locked doors.
"Did you receive money?"" he asked.
Emily looked up sharply.
"What?""
"Did Daniel pay you?""
"No!""
"Twenty-five thousand dollars was transferred from an account connected to Vanessa. Your name is on Sarah's warning. And now you're telling me you signed a statement supporting Vanessa's claim to Lily's money.""
"I didn't know about the money!""
"How am I supposed to believe you?""
Emily pressed both hands against her mouth.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Then she reached into her handbag and removed a folded envelope.
"I kept this because I was afraid something was wrong.""
Michael took it.
Inside was a copy of the statement she had signed, along with a handwritten note from Daniel.
Please keep this matter confidential until the estate review is complete. Your cooperation is important to protecting Lily's interests.
The statement claimed Sarah had verbally agreed to let Vanessa manage Lily's financial affairs.
But there was something else.
At the bottom, beneath Emily's signature, someone had added a paragraph in different ink.
I further confirm that Sarah Carter intended for her daughter to receive no more than $25,000 before her twenty-first birthday.
Michael read it twice.
"Did you write this?""
Emily shook her head violently.
"No. That wasn't on the paper when I signed it.""
"Did you notice it later?""
"Not until Daniel sent me a copy. I called him immediately, and he said it was a clerical error. He promised to correct it.""
"Did he?""
"I don't know.""
Michael placed the statement on the table.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I was ashamed. I thought I'd made a terrible mistake by getting involved. Then Sarah's letter appeared, and I realized she might have suspected me.""
Emily's voice broke.
"I loved Sarah, Michael. I would never have helped anyone steal from Lily.""
He wanted to believe her.
But wanting something to be true had never made it true.
His phone rang.
The bank manager, Patricia Wells, was calling.
"Mr. Carter, we've completed a preliminary review of the $75,000 request. There's a document attached that you need to see.""
"What document?""
"A purported amendment to the trust. It claims your wife authorized Vanessa to receive a management fee and directs a portion of the trust assets to a separate account.""
"Who signed it?""
"Your wife's name appears on the document. So does your sister's.""
Michael looked at Emily.
She was watching him with terrified eyes.
"Send it to my attorney," he said.
"I already have. There's one more issue. The document was submitted alongside a notarized affidavit.""
"Who notarized it?""
Patricia paused.
"According to the seal, a notary named Robert Hale.""
Michael knew the name.
Robert Hale had been his father's longtime accountant before retiring three years earlier.
And he had died eleven months ago.
"That's impossible," Michael whispered.
"Mr. Carter?""
"That notary is dead.""
The line went silent.
Then Patricia said, "I'll preserve the document and notify our fraud department.""
Michael ended the call.
Emily stood.
"What happened?""
He showed her the bank's message.
She read it, then covered her mouth.
"Michael, this is bigger than Vanessa.""
He looked at her.
For the first time that morning, he believed her.
A knock sounded at the front door.
Emily went to answer it.
Michael heard a man's voice in the hallway.
"Good morning. I'm looking for Michael Carter.""
He stepped into the doorway.
A tall man in a charcoal suit stood on the porch, holding a leather briefcase. His expression was calm, almost sympathetic.
"Mr. Carter? My name is Adrian Cole. I represent Vanessa Carter.""
Michael didn't invite him inside.
"What does Vanessa want?""
"She wants to resolve this matter privately before it becomes more damaging to everyone involved.""
"Then she should tell the truth.""
Adrian opened his briefcase and removed a document.
"Your stepmother has filed an emergency petition seeking temporary authority over Lily's financial affairs. She claims you're experiencing severe emotional distress and have become incapable of managing your daughter's inheritance.""
Michael felt his pulse hammer.
"She's claiming I'm unfit?""
"She's concerned about your recent behavior.""
"What behavior?""
"Your accusations, your unauthorized entry into her private office, and your apparent intention to remove Lily from her established home without consultation.""
Michael stared at him.
"She was feeding my daughter scraps while her own son ate steak.""
Adrian's expression remained unchanged.
"That's a serious allegation. I understand you have photographs and other evidence. My client disputes your interpretation.""
"Your client can explain herself to a judge.""
Adrian placed the document against his briefcase.
"One more thing. Vanessa has requested that Lily be interviewed by a court-appointed evaluator. She believes the child may have been coached.""
Michael stepped closer.
"She's eight years old.""
"Which is why the court will want to ensure her statements are reliable.""
Adrian handed him a copy of the petition.
Michael scanned the first page.
Then his eyes stopped at the section listing supporting witnesses.
Daniel Reeves.
Emily Carter.
He looked up.
"Emily didn't agree to this.""
Adrian adjusted his cuff.
"Your sister's signed statement is attached.""
Michael turned toward Emily.
She shook her head.
"I never signed anything for Vanessa's lawyer.""
Adrian glanced at the document.
"Perhaps there's been a misunderstanding.""
Michael's phone vibrated.
A message from an unknown number appeared.
*Vanessa isn't trying to steal Lily's money anymore. She's trying to take Lily away from you.*
A second message followed.
*And Daniel Reeves has already filed the paperwork.*
Michael looked at the lawyer standing on his porch.
Then he looked at his sister.
May you like
Someone was moving faster than he could follow.
And whoever it was had just turned his own family into weapons against him.
