Chapter 7: The Man Sarah Tried to Warn Me About

Michael found his uncle living above a closed hardware store on the edge of town.

The building had peeling blue paint, boarded windows on the ground floor, and a narrow staircase that smelled of dust and old cigarettes. A single light glowed behind the upstairs curtains.

Rachel had traced the address through public records. The apartment was registered under Thomas Carter's name, but the utility bills had been paid through an account belonging to a woman Michael didn't recognize.

At 6:40 p.m., Michael stood outside the apartment door with Rachel beside him.

"You don't have to come in," he told her.

"I'm your attorney. And if this man has evidence connected to a forged will, I'm not letting you walk into an unknown situation alone.""

Michael knocked.

Nothing.

He knocked again.

A lock clicked.

The door opened three inches, revealing one wary eye and a gray beard.

Thomas Carter looked older than Michael remembered. His hair had thinned, his shoulders had rounded, and a deep scar ran from his left temple to the edge of his jaw.

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Then Thomas looked at Rachel.

"Who are you?""

"Rachel Bennett. I'm representing Michael.""

Thomas began closing the door.

Michael caught it with his palm.

"Uncle Thomas, wait.""

The older man froze.

"Don't call me that.""

"Sarah's dead.""

Thomas's expression changed.

Michael continued, his voice roughening.

"Lily is being targeted. Someone has been trying to steal her inheritance. Sarah left a letter saying you might know why.""

Thomas looked at him for a long moment.

Then he opened the door.

"Come in.""

The apartment was small and meticulously clean. A kettle sat on a hot plate. Books were stacked beneath a window, and a single framed photograph rested on a shelf.

It showed Sarah holding baby Lily.

Michael stopped walking.

"Where did you get that?""

Thomas followed his gaze.

"Sarah sent it to me.""

"When?""

"Three months before she died.""

Michael turned sharply.

"You were in contact with her?""

Thomas lowered himself into a chair.

"She contacted me first.""

Michael's anger surged.

"You disappeared from this family. You stopped answering my calls. You let Dad die without ever showing up at the hospital. And now you're telling me Sarah was writing to you?""

Thomas's jaw tightened.

"Your father made sure I couldn't come back.""

"That doesn't answer my question.""

"No. It doesn't.""

Rachel took a notebook from her bag.

"Mr. Carter, we need to establish what you know about the will and the attempted transfer of Lily's trust funds.""

Thomas looked at her.

"Do you have the original document?""

"The court has it.""

"Then the damage has already been done.""

Michael stepped closer.

"What damage?""

Thomas reached beneath the coffee table and removed a thick manila envelope.

"Sarah sent me copies of the documents she discovered. She was afraid someone would destroy the originals.""

He placed the envelope on the table.

Inside were copies of emails, bank statements, and a handwritten note dated six weeks before Sarah's death.

Michael recognized Sarah's handwriting immediately.

Thomas, I believe Vanessa and Daniel are working together. They want access to Lily's trust, and they may try to use my illness to question the validity of my decisions. I need you to keep these records safe. If Michael ever comes to you, tell him the truth, even if he hates you for it.

Michael read the note twice.

Then he looked at his uncle.

"Why didn't you come to me?""

Thomas's face hardened.

"Because I was a coward.""

The blunt answer caught Michael off guard.

Thomas continued.

"When your father was alive, he controlled every aspect of the family business. I worked for him for twelve years. When I discovered he was moving money through accounts that didn't belong to him, I confronted him.""

"My father never stole money.""

Thomas gave a tired laugh.

"That's what he told you.""

Michael felt his chest tighten.

"You're lying.""

"I wish I were.""

Thomas opened another folder.

He showed Michael a series of business records from eight years earlier. Several transfers had been made from a family investment account into a private company controlled by Michael's father.

The amounts were substantial.

"What does this have to do with Lily?""

"Your father used money that belonged to other investors to cover losses. When I threatened to report it, he accused me of stealing and forced me out of the company.""

Michael stared at the documents.

"Why didn't you go to the police?""

"I did. The case collapsed because the records disappeared. Your father had friends in places I didn't.""

"And Sarah knew?""

"She discovered the old records while organizing your father's estate. She contacted me because she believed the same financial arrangement was being used again.""

Michael sat down.

His father had been dead for five years. Michael had spent most of his adult life believing the man was a demanding but honest businessman.

Now he was looking at records that suggested otherwise.

Rachel examined the papers.

"These documents could be important, but we'll need to verify their authenticity.""

Thomas nodded.

"There's more.""

He took out a printed email exchange between Daniel and Vanessa.

The first message was dated four months before Sarah died.

Vanessa had written:

If Sarah changes the trust, Brandon and I will be left with nothing. We need a way to preserve the money before she makes another amendment.

Daniel's reply was brief.

Do not approach her directly. Any change must be documented properly.

A later email contained a sentence that made Michael's hands tremble.

The child can reproduce the father's signature if given enough practice. The question is whether we can establish authority before the mother dies.

Michael looked up.

"Who wrote this?""

Thomas pointed to the sender's address.

"Daniel.""

Rachel leaned forward.

"How did you obtain these emails?""

"Sarah forwarded them to me. She had access to the family business archive and found correspondence that Daniel had stored on an old company server.""

Michael stared at the screen.

Daniel had known about the signature practice before Sarah died.

The scheme had not begun with Vanessa's desperation after the funeral. It had been planned while Sarah was still alive.

"Why did Sarah tell me to find you?"" Michael asked.

Thomas looked at him.

"Because she believed you were the only person who could stop them.""

"Then why didn't she tell me herself?""

"She tried.""

Thomas reached for another envelope.

Inside was a letter addressed to Michael, dated five months earlier.

Michael's breath caught.

He opened it.

Michael, if Thomas gives you this letter, then I failed to convince you to listen to me while I was alive.

His eyes blurred.

I know how much you love your father. I know what it would mean to discover that he wasn't the man you believed him to be. But I need you to understand something: Vanessa didn't enter our lives by accident.

Michael stopped reading.

"What does that mean?""

Thomas looked away.

"Your father knew Vanessa long before he married her.""

Michael stared at him.

"How long?""

"Years.""

"That's impossible. Dad met Vanessa at a charity dinner.""

"That's the story he told everyone.""

Thomas opened a photograph album.

On one page was a picture of Michael's father standing beside a younger Vanessa. They were outside a restaurant, smiling at the camera.

On the back was a date.

Four years before Michael's father had divorced his first wife.

Michael's stomach turned.

"You're saying Dad was seeing her before the divorce?""

"I'm saying your father had a relationship with her long before he admitted it.""

Michael pushed the album away.

"Why would Sarah care?""

"Because she found records showing Vanessa had received money from your father's private accounts. She suspected Vanessa had been helping him move assets long before she became your stepmother.""

Rachel studied the photograph.

"That may establish a relationship, but it doesn't prove financial wrongdoing.""

"No," Thomas agreed.

"The bank records do.""

He removed another document.

It showed a transfer of $75,000 from an account connected to Michael's father's estate into an account associated with Vanessa.

The transfer had occurred two weeks after Sarah was diagnosed with cancer.

Michael felt sick.

"Why would Dad's estate send money to Vanessa?""

"That's what Sarah wanted to know.""

Thomas pointed to a handwritten note.

If Vanessa gains control of Lily's trust, she can redirect funds through the same network of accounts.

Michael looked at Rachel.

"Can she do that?""

"Not legally. But if someone submits forged authorizations and misrepresents who has authority, they can attempt to move money before the fraud is detected.""

Michael returned to the emails.

One message from Daniel referred to a second beneficiary.

The name had been blacked out on the copy.

"Who is the second beneficiary?""

Thomas hesitated.

"That's the part Sarah couldn't prove.""

"Then how do you know about it?""

"Because I received a phone call from the person who was supposed to receive the money.""

Michael stood.

"Who?""

Before Thomas could answer, a loud crash came from downstairs.

Glass shattered.

Rachel moved toward the window.

A black SUV sat at the curb with its headlights off. A man in a dark jacket was climbing the stairs.

Thomas went pale.

"He's here.""

"Who?"" Michael demanded.

Thomas grabbed the envelope and shoved it into Rachel's hands.

"Take these records. Get them out of here.""

The footsteps grew louder.

Rachel pulled Michael toward the kitchen.

"There's a rear exit?""

Thomas nodded toward a narrow door.

"Fire escape.""

Michael hesitated.

"I'm not leaving you.""

Thomas seized his arm.

"Your daughter needs you alive and free. Go!""

The apartment door shook under a violent blow.

A man's voice rang through the hall.

"Thomas! Open the door!""

Thomas looked at Michael with sudden, desperate urgency.

"There's one thing you still don't know. The second beneficiary isn't a stranger. It's someone who has been standing beside you this entire time.""

The door splintered.

Michael ran toward the fire escape with Rachel.

Behind them, Thomas shouted something.

Then came the sound of a struggle.

Michael turned back just as the apartment door burst open.

He saw a flash of a dark sleeve, Thomas falling against the wall, and a hand reaching for the envelope.

Rachel dragged Michael down the metal stairs.

They reached the alley seconds later.

By the time Michael called the police, the SUV had disappeared.

Thomas was alive, but he had suffered a head injury and was taken to the hospital.

The envelope remained in Rachel's possession.

And among the papers was a single page Thomas had slipped inside without Michael noticing.

It was a copy of a bank transfer.

The recipient's name was clear.

*Brandon Carter.*

The second beneficiary was Vanessa's son.

But the account had been opened when Brandon was only four years old.

And the person who had funded it was not Vanessa.

It was Michael's father.
