Chapter 9: The Last Lie Claire Told
Claire’s message stayed in my mind all night.
The fake pregnancy.
The stolen years.
The hidden daughter.
The property documents.
How many more secrets could one person carry?
But somehow, Claire had found one more.
And she wanted us to know.
Not because she felt guilty.
Because she wanted to hurt us.
The next morning, Daniel received a call from Claire’s lawyer.
“She wants to meet,” he said.
I looked at him.
“Are you going?””
He was silent for a long time.
Then he nodded.
“I need answers.””
I understood.
Sometimes the truth hurts less than the questions you carry.
We met at a small office downtown.
Claire was sitting by the window when we arrived.
She looked different.
Not broken.
Not ashamed.
Calm.
That scared me more.
Daniel sat across from her.
“You have five minutes.””
Claire smiled faintly.
“So that’s all I get now?””
“You used up your chances.””
Her expression tightened.
“I guess I deserve that.””
I almost believed she meant it.
Almost.
Then she reached into her bag.
“I know what you think.””
She placed a folder on the table.
“You think I’m the villain in this story.””
Daniel didn’t touch it.
“You are.””
Claire looked at him.
“You don’t even want to know what’s inside?””
“No.””
A flicker of anger crossed her face.
“You always did that.””
“Did what?””
“Decided who was right before hearing me.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You lied about having a child.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
“You tried to take my house.””
“Yes.””
“You hid my daughter from me.””
Her eyes filled slightly.
“Yes.””
The honesty was unexpected.
Then she whispered:
“But I didn’t do it alone.””
The room became quiet.
I felt my chest tighten.
Daniel looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
Claire opened the folder.
Inside were printed emails.
Messages.
Documents.
She pushed them across the table.
“Look.””
Daniel glanced at the pages.
Then his face changed.
I leaned forward.
The first email was from three years earlier.
The sender was someone I recognized.
My heart stopped.
It was from me.
Except I had never sent it.
The email said:
*Daniel, I think you need to stop looking for Lily. Emily has made it clear she doesn’t want you involved. Please let it go.*
Daniel looked at me.
My face went cold.
“I didn’t write that.””
Claire watched us carefully.
“That’s what I said.””
Daniel picked up another page.
There were more.
Emails.
Messages.
Screenshots.
All appearing to show me convincing Daniel to give up.
But something felt wrong.
The wording.
The timing.
The details.
I studied the pages.
Then I noticed something.
“Wait.””
Daniel looked at me.
“What?””
I pointed.
“This email was supposedly sent from my account.””
“Yes,” Claire said.
“But the signature is wrong.””
Claire frowned.
“What?””
I turned the page.
“My email signature always included my phone number.””
I looked at Daniel.
“I never removed it.””
The room went silent.
Claire’s expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
Daniel noticed too.
“You created these.””
Claire immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“You forged her messages.””
“No!””
Her voice rose.
“You don’t understand!””
“Then explain.””
She stopped.
That was the problem.
There was no explanation.
Only another lie.
I looked at Claire.
“How did you get access to my account?””
Her silence answered before her words did.
Daniel stood.
“You used her.””
Claire looked at him.
“I needed someone to blame.””
The confession came quietly.
And somehow, that made it worse.
“You were already the person everyone trusted,” Claire said.
I stared at her.
“So you decided to destroy me?””
“I needed time.””
“You always say that.””
Claire looked away.
“I thought if Daniel hated you, he would stop searching.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You didn’t just want me to stay.””
Claire looked at him.
“No.””
Her voice became almost a whisper.
“I wanted you to need me.””
The room felt heavy.
For the first time, Claire wasn’t pretending to be innocent.
She was admitting everything.
Then Daniel noticed another document.
His eyes moved across the page.
“What is this?””
Claire froze.
I looked at the paper.
It was a medical record.
A real one.
Daniel’s hand shook.
“What is this?””
Claire didn’t answer.
He looked at her.
“Claire.””
Slowly, she whispered:
“I told you there was no baby.””
Daniel stared.
“Yes.””
“But that wasn’t the first time.””
My stomach dropped.
“What are you saying?””
Claire looked at Daniel.
“I was pregnant once.””
The words changed everything.
Daniel sat back.
“When?””
“Three years ago.””
Nobody spoke.
The truth we thought we understood suddenly became something else.
Claire wiped her tears.
“I lost the baby.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Then why fake this one?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because after losing that child, I thought you would leave me.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Even Daniel looked shaken.
But then Claire continued.
“And when I saw you searching for Lily…”
She looked at him.
“I realized you could love a child that wasn’t even mine.””
The sadness in her voice almost sounded real.
Almost.
Then Daniel asked the question nobody wanted to ask.
“Was the baby mine?””
Claire looked at him.
And didn’t answer.
That silence was louder than anything else.
Daniel stood.
“Was it mine?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know.””
The room went completely still.
Because that was the one answer nobody expected.
And then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
A few seconds later, his face changed.
“DNA results?””
My heart started racing.
The caller continued.
Daniel listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
He looked at Claire.
“The hospital found the records.””
Claire stopped breathing.
Daniel whispered:
“The baby three years ago…”
May you like
A pause.
“Wasn’t mine.””
