Chapter 7: The Secret I Was Forced to Keep

The name on the screen made my entire body go cold.

Mine.

For a few seconds, I convinced myself I was reading it wrong.

Maybe the lighting was bad.

Maybe Daniel’s phone had glitched.

Maybe after everything that had happened that night, our minds were searching for another person to blame.

But the message was still there.

*Claire wasn’t the only person who kept her from you.*

And beneath it:

*You knew too.*

Daniel looked at me.

The hurt in his eyes was worse than anger.

“Is this true?””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no easy answer.

Not anymore.

“I can explain.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

The sound was painful.

“Everyone says that when they’ve already lied.””

I looked down.

“I didn’t lie to hurt you.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

The question stayed between us.

Because I had asked myself the same thing for years.

I remembered the first time I found out.

Three years earlier.

I had been helping Daniel clean out old family documents after his father passed away. Buried inside a box of paperwork was a letter from a woman named Emily.

The letter was short.

But it changed everything.

She wrote that Daniel had a daughter.

A little girl named Lily.

She wrote that she had tried contacting him but couldn’t reach him.

At first, I thought it was impossible.

Daniel was the kind of person who would never abandon a child.

So I searched.

And I found Emily.

But before I could tell Daniel, Claire found out.

I still remembered that night.

She came to my apartment without warning.

Her face was pale.

“You found her.””

I had been shocked.

“How do you know?””

Claire stepped inside and closed the door behind her.

“Because Emily contacted me too.””

I stared at her.

“Why didn’t you tell Daniel?””

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Because if he knows, everything changes.””

I shook my head.

“He deserves to know.””

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Please.””

I had never seen her beg before.

“I’m not asking you to protect me.””

I looked at her.

“Then what are you asking?””

She whispered:

“I’m asking you to give me time.””

I should have refused.

I know that now.

But Daniel had just lost his father.

His marriage was already struggling.

And I convinced myself waiting a few days wouldn’t matter.

A few days became weeks.

Weeks became months.

And every time I tried to tell him, something happened.

An argument.

A family emergency.

A moment when he looked so broken that I couldn’t bring myself to add another wound.

But the truth was simple.

I was afraid.

I was afraid of destroying his life.

And my silence became another lie.

I looked at Daniel.

“I’m sorry.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“Don’t say that yet.””

I swallowed.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“You should have.””

I nodded.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

Daniel looked away.

“You were protecting everyone except me.””

The words hit because they were true.

Then his phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, a video.

Daniel pressed play.

The screen showed Claire.

She was sitting in a café.

Talking to someone.

Someone behind the camera.

Her voice was clear.

“I just need him to believe the baby is his long enough to stop searching.””

Daniel froze.

The video continued.

“He’s emotional. Once he feels like he’s building a family, he won’t care about the past.””

I watched Daniel’s expression change.

The sadness disappeared.

Something colder replaced it.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel stood.

“Where is Lily?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know.””

Another message appeared.

*She is closer than you think.*

Daniel immediately called the number.

It rang once.

Twice.

Then someone answered.

A woman’s voice.

“Daniel?””

His eyes widened.

“Emily?””

The woman started crying.

“I didn’t know if you would ever call.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Where is my daughter?””

There was a long silence.

Then Emily said:

“She’s been waiting to meet you.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“When?””

“Tomorrow.””

I watched him struggle to breathe.

After three years of stolen time, he was finally going to meet his daughter.

But then Emily added something that changed everything.

“Daniel…”

“Yes?””

“I need to tell you something about Claire.””

His expression tightened.

“What?””

Emily’s voice shook.

“She didn’t just stop you from finding Lily.””

May you like

A pause.

“She tried to take Lily away from me.””
