Chapter 3: The Evidence I Hid
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
Every person in that room was staring at me.
Daniel looked confused. My relatives looked shocked. Claire looked terrified.
And Sophie, the little girl who had accidentally exposed the biggest lie our family had ever seen, simply held onto her mother’s hand and watched quietly.
I swallowed hard.
“I didn’t want to do this here,” I said.
My voice sounded smaller than I expected.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Do what?””
I looked at Claire.
“Tell you the truth.””
Claire shook her head quickly.
“No. Don’t listen to her.””
Her voice was desperate now.
“She’s always hated me.””
I almost laughed because the accusation was so ridiculous.
“I hated you?””
I looked around the room.
“I defended you when people questioned your relationship with Daniel. I told everyone to stop judging you. I helped plan this celebration.””
Claire’s face tightened.
“Then why are you trying to destroy me?””
“Because you were destroying him.””
The room went silent again.
Daniel stared at me.
“What did you find?””
I reached into my purse.
My hands were shaking.
For weeks, I had carried the evidence everywhere because I didn’t know what to do with it. I had imagined confronting Claire privately. I had imagined telling Daniel gently.
I never imagined standing in front of an entire family.
But Claire had left me no choice.
I pulled out my phone.
“I found these messages.””
Daniel frowned.
“What messages?””
I unlocked the screen and walked toward him.
The first one was between Claire and a woman named Vanessa.
Daniel read it.
His eyebrows pulled together.
*Claire: “I just need six more months. Once the baby is here, he won’t leave.””*
The color disappeared from his face.
I watched his eyes move to the next message.
*Vanessa: “Are you sure this is worth it? What if he finds out?””*
*Claire: “He won’t. Daniel loves children too much.””*
Nobody spoke.
Nobody even breathed.
Daniel looked up slowly.
“Where did you get these?””
I looked at Claire.
“She left her tablet at my house.””
Claire immediately stepped forward.
“You went through my things?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You sent those messages while you were visiting me.””
Claire froze.
I continued.
“You connected your tablet to my Wi-Fi because your phone battery was dead.””
A few relatives exchanged looks.
“I saw the notifications pop up.””
Daniel stared at Claire.
“And you knew?””
Claire looked away.
“That’s not the whole story.””
“Then tell me the whole story.””
Her lips trembled.
“I was afraid.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He pointed at the fake pregnancy.
“You were afraid, so you lied?””
Claire started crying.
“I thought you were going to leave me.””
“Maybe I was.””
The words hit her harder than anything else.
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Maybe I was unhappy. Maybe we had problems. But you took away my choice.””
I watched Claire’s face change.
For the first time, she looked like she understood what she had actually done.
Not the fake belly.
Not the fake appointments.
Not the lies.
She had stolen months of someone’s life.
Dr. Harrison quietly stepped back, letting the family deal with the truth.
But Claire wasn’t finished.
She turned toward me.
“You think you’re better than me?””
I stared at her.
“No.””
“Yes, you do.””
Her tears turned into anger.
“You’ve always been the perfect sister-in-law. The one everyone trusts. The one everyone calls when they need help.””
She laughed bitterly.
“And now you get to be the hero.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Claire, stop.””
But she continued.
“You don’t know what it’s like watching everyone around you have the life you want.””
Her voice cracked.
“You don’t know what it feels like to think someone is going to walk away.””
I looked at her carefully.
And for one second, I almost felt sorry for her.
Almost.
Then I remembered the messages.
The manipulation.
The way Daniel had smiled every time he talked about becoming a father.
She had taken something precious and turned it into a weapon.
“You could have asked for help,” I said quietly.
Claire looked at me.
“You could have told the truth.””
She said nothing.
Because there was nothing left to defend.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Everyone looked down at it.
The name on the screen made his face change.
“Detective Morgan.””
My stomach tightened.
Why would a detective be calling him?
Daniel answered.
“Hello?””
He listened silently.
Then his expression became confused.
“What do you mean, another report?””
The room went still.
He looked at Claire.
“No.””
A pause.
Then another.
“What name?””
His eyes moved slowly around the room.
Finally, they stopped on Claire.
“Are you sure?””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel lowered the phone.
And when he looked up again, I knew whatever the detective had told him was worse than we imagined.
“Claire,” he said quietly.
“Who is Marcus?””
Claire’s face went completely blank.
And I knew that name.
Because I had seen it before.
