Chapter 5: The Price of Trust

Daniel stared at the document in his hands.

At first, he didn’t seem to understand what he was looking at.

The room was still filled with whispers, but they sounded distant. Like they were coming from another building. Another world.

He turned the page slowly.

Then he looked at Claire.

“What is this?””

Claire’s face had lost all color.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“That’s the second time tonight you’ve said my name like it can fix everything.””

He held up the document.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus looked uncomfortable, but he stepped forward.

“It’s a transfer agreement.””

Daniel looked at him.

“For what?””

Marcus swallowed.

“Your house.””

The words hit harder than any accusation before.

Daniel looked back at the paper.

My heart sank as I watched him read.

The document was a property transfer form. It showed that Claire had been preparing paperwork to move ownership of Daniel’s house into a shared account.

The house Daniel had inherited from his father.

The house where he grew up.

The house he had told me he would never sell because it was the last thing he had from his family.

Daniel’s fingers tightened around the paper.

“When were you planning this?””

Claire wiped her tears.

“It wasn’t like that.””

Daniel looked up sharply.

“Then what was it like?””

She stepped closer.

“I was trying to protect our future.””

“Our future?””

He laughed bitterly.

“You mean the future where you fake a child, fake medical records, and take my home?””

Claire shook her head.

“No. You’re misunderstanding.””

“Am I?””

His voice finally broke.

“Because from where I’m standing, the woman I married has spent months creating a fake life.””

Claire looked desperate.

“I never signed anything.””

Marcus spoke quietly.

“But you were close.””

Everyone turned toward him.

Claire glared.

“Why are you doing this?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because you stopped paying me.””

The room froze.

Daniel looked confused.

“You paid him?””

Claire closed her eyes.

And that was the answer.

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

“How much?””

No response.

“How much did you pay him to help you fake this?””

Claire whispered.

“I didn’t pay him to hurt you.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

She looked down.

“Twenty thousand dollars.””

A collective gasp moved through the room.

Daniel stared at her.

“Twenty thousand.””

“I was desperate.””

“You keep saying that.””

His voice became colder.

“But desperate people ask for help. They don’t build traps.””

I watched Claire’s expression change.

For the first time, she wasn’t crying to be forgiven.

She was crying because she had lost control.

Marcus stepped forward.

“I should explain something.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You better.””

Marcus nodded.

“Claire contacted me six months ago.””

Claire immediately said, “Don’t.””

But Marcus continued.

“She found me online. She wanted someone who could create fake documents and fake medical records.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“She planned everything.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“At first, I thought it was just a lie between two people. I didn’t know how far she would take it.””

Daniel looked at him.

“And then?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Then she started talking about your assets.””

The silence afterward was unbearable.

I looked at Claire.

The woman who had once cried because Daniel forgot their anniversary.

The woman who told everyone she just wanted a family.

Now everyone saw what she had really wanted.

Daniel placed the documents on the table.

“I need to ask one thing.””

Claire looked at him.

“What?””

“Was any part of it real?””

Her lips parted.

“What?””

“The love.””

His voice was almost a whisper.

“Was any of it real?””

Claire began crying again.

But this time, Daniel didn’t move toward her.

“I loved you.””

She covered her mouth.

“I know.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You don’t.””

The room became silent.

“I spent months imagining holding my son.””

His eyes moved to her fake belly.

“I talked to him when you were asleep.””

Claire broke down.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel looked away.

“That’s the problem.””

He swallowed.

“You’re sorry now because you got caught.””

Before Claire could answer, the sound of footsteps interrupted them.

Two officers entered the room.

Everyone turned.

One of them approached Daniel.

“Mr. Carter?””

Daniel nodded.

“We need to speak with Claire Reynolds regarding the documents and fraud investigation.””

Claire immediately stepped backward.

“No.””

The officer remained calm.

“You have the right to remain silent…”

Her face collapsed.

And as everyone watched, the woman who had entered the celebration pretending to be an expectant mother was escorted away under the same golden lights where she had planned to announce her perfect future.

But as Claire passed me, she stopped.

For a moment, I thought she was going to apologize.

Instead, she leaned close and whispered:

“You think this is over?””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

A small, bitter smile appeared on her face.

“Ask Daniel what happened three years ago.””

Then she walked away.

May you like

And Daniel’s expression changed.

Because he knew exactly what she was talking about.
