Chapter 7: The Account Nobody Knew Existed

The message on my father’s phone changed everything.

Not because of the money.

Not because of the secret account.

But because someone outside our family knew about it.

A secret my grandfather had taken to his grave.

I looked at my father.

“Who knows about this?””

He stared at the screen.

“I don’t know.””

Michael stepped closer.

“Daniel, what account are they talking about?””

My father hesitated.

That hesitation scared me more than the message.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“There was something your grandfather left behind.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

My father glanced around the ballroom.

The few remaining guests had already left. The flowers were dying on the tables. The wedding cake sat untouched.

This was supposed to be the happiest day of my life.

Instead, I was uncovering secrets my family had hidden for years.

My father took a slow breath.

“Your grandfather created a private account before he passed away.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because it wasn’t an inheritance.””

I frowned.

“Then what was it?””

He looked at my mother.

She nodded quietly.

“Tell him.””

My father reached into his jacket and pulled out an old key.

“I promised your grandfather I wouldn’t say anything unless you were ready.””

I stared at the key.

“Ready for what?””

He placed it in my hand.

“To know the truth about where your family’s money came from.””

The room went silent.

Claire, who had been standing in the corner, suddenly spoke.

“Daniel…”

I turned toward her.

“You knew about this.””

It wasn’t a question.

Her silence answered.

Michael looked at her with disbelief.

“You knew?””

Claire looked away.

“I heard conversations.””

“Whose conversations?””

She didn’t answer.

My father’s expression hardened.

“My office.””

Everyone looked at him.

Claire swallowed.

“I didn’t break into anything.””

My father stepped forward.

“You didn’t have to.””

The accusation hung in the air.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

My father looked at me.

“Six months ago, Claire started asking about your grandfather.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of questions?””

“Questions about documents. Lawyers. Family records.””

I looked at Claire.

“Why?””

She wiped her face.

“Because I wanted to understand your family.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

“But you wanted to understand what you could get.””

She looked hurt.

“Daniel, that’s not fair.””

I almost laughed.

Fair.

That word felt strange coming from her.

Marcus suddenly looked at the key.

“Mr. Evans, if that account exists, someone may already be trying to access it.””

My father nodded.

“That’s why we need to move.””

“Move where?””

He looked at me.

“Your grandfather’s old office.””

An hour later, we stood inside a small building behind my father’s house.

I had passed it hundreds of times growing up.

I thought it was just storage.

I was wrong.

The room smelled like old wood and paper.

My father unlocked the door.

Inside were shelves filled with boxes.

Documents.

Photographs.

Memories.

“This was his private office,” my father said.

I touched an old desk.

“He never let anyone in here.””

My father looked down.

“Except one person.””

I turned.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Claire’s father.””

The room went cold.

Michael looked shocked.

“What?””

My father opened a drawer.

“He worked with your grandfather years ago.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because your grandfather trusted him.””

A bitter laugh escaped from me.

“Clearly he shouldn’t have.””

My father found an old folder.

Inside was a photograph.

Two men shaking hands.

My grandfather.

And Claire’s father.

On the back of the picture were handwritten words.

“Partners until betrayal.””

I looked at my father.

“What happened?””

He opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, his phone rang.

He checked the number.

Then froze.

“Who is it?”” my mother asked.

My father looked at me.

“It’s Claire’s father.””

Everyone became still.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A voice came through the speaker.

Even from where I stood, I could hear the anger.

Robert, you need to stop digging.

My father’s face tightened.

“You threatened my son’s wedding.””

A pause.

Then the voice replied:

“No. I protected my daughter’s future.””

I stepped closer.

“Give me the phone.””

My father handed it to me.

“Mr. Carter?””

Silence.

Then a cold voice answered.

“Daniel.””

I felt my blood run cold.

“You know who I am.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

A quiet laugh came from the speaker.

“Because your grandfather made one mistake.””

“What mistake?””

The voice became lower.

“He thought he could hide the truth from me forever.””

I looked around the room.

Then the man said:

“Daniel, before you judge Claire, you should ask your father what he did twenty-five years ago.””

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

My father looked away.

And for the first time that day…

I wondered if there was another side to the story.
